Recycle at home!

I just bought myself one of these Really Useful storage boxes...

...and I'm going to use it to make my own home-burned version of how Rob Gretton's doomed Recycle project might have turned out.

The storage box will hold 18 full-sized jewel-cased CDs, so here's how I plan to use it to house the singles from the Factory period.

I applied the following rules (largely to make things easier, nicer, or just plain possible):

1. No a-side edits to be used unless a 7 inch version was commercially released. Thus The Perfect Kiss is the first.

2. No b-side edits to be used at all, although I made exceptions for Everything's Gone Green and Shame of the Nation, because they were really a-sides too.

3. "Associated" singles - Procession and Everything's Gone Green; Thieves Like Us and Murder - to appear on the same disc.

4. Any associated and roughly contemporary versions not from the Factory singles to be included where possible - the live video version of The Perfect Kiss, for example, or the Pretty in Pink mix of Shellshock.

I plan to use my favourite sleeve images for the inlay of each disc, and to print the track details on the back of the tray.

But before I start burning in earnest, I want to see if anyone has any suggestions as to how things might be improved or enhanced. I'm sure most of us have at least thought about doing something like this at some point, so I'd appreciate any "here's one I made earlier" type input.

Very interesting project David. While you're at it, what do you reckon the tracklistings of the seconds discs of New Order album remasters would be? Allow me to rephrase, what second discs would YOU put together?

I've wondered about that since hearing that the forthcoming Joy Division remaster/reissues are to come with a live show each.

I have a fairly large number of unofficial live New Order recordings in releasable quality, and it would be possible to select shows from these sources if that route were to be chosen; however the case of New Order is different from that of Joy Division, in that their back catalogue of singles and b-sides is not readily available at present.

The problem, as the years go on, is the number of remixes. Whilst these make for entertaining listening if you have them all in one place, and can pull out - say - your Round & Round disc and play whichever mix takes your fancy, nobody would want to play a companion disc to an album very often if it contained more than two versions of the same song.

I'll have a quick look at the possible permutations (sticking to the Factory period again, for now) and post some suggestions shortly.

I think so, but I thought the intention was to put them out in two boxes of eleven, featuring all the mixes/versions and b-sides released at the time (so that Blue Monday would turn up at least three times) along with the videos?

Clearly, I haven't tried to go that far yet, and (as touched on above) the myriad remixes do start to make it all a bit difficult after a while.

My original plan was to use some of these cute little Imation 3-inch CDRs...

...but they hold a maximum 24 minutes of music, so I wouldn't have got as far as Confusion, let alone Round & Round.

Yes, I really ought to have been clearer with that one; however the green-sleeved 12 inch from which I recorded In a Lonely Place does feature the original versions of both songs.

It's not a bad boot actually! The transfers are well done and this was long before Retro or Singles came along.

Will keep an eye out for that Extracts... boot, but you're right - Recycle could have been the definitive New Order singles collection, and might have remained on catalogue and a strong seller for years...

...like Blue Monday - and look how much money that lost!

Thinking about it, and even allowing for it having emerged before Retro and Singles, that Excerpts from Recycle boot makes at least one odd choice in terms of rarities: Evil Dust is readily available on a number of goth/industrial collections, like this one, from 1998.
