..who would direct it?
I'm thinking Sofia Coppola would be great. Her movies deal with a sort of innocence and naivete in her characters.. all played along to a great soundtrack.
And what could the movie be named?
And what key pieces of the New Order story should make it into the script?
Would be fantastic to see a movie about NO! I have no hunches on who would direct it since I'm out of the loop in movies, perhaps Tim Burton. Possible film name-- "Blue Monday" or "Brotherhood"
Key pieces of the movie should involve how NO resurfaces from JD and evolve into making cutting edge dance music from the best selling record (Blue Monday), the hacienda fiasco/bankruptcy and the release of "Technique" and the Ibiza scene.
The latter years of Republic/Get Ready/WFTSC period delves more into the cliche rock n roll band of breaking up/reuniting and in-house clashes so it probably wouldn't be much of a story.
Who would play them...? Russell Crowe as Hooky? That Mr Bean guy as Steve? Umo Thurman as Gillian? ...but who would be Bernard?

it would be cool that they get the three guys who played bernard, steve and hooky to do it for a new order movie.
I just saw "Across the Universe" this weekend by the way. Joe Anderson (who plays Hooky in Control) is a main character in it, and he's quite a good singer.

Like Tony said, take the legend over the truth any day. Just go for it. Get Oliver Stone in. Call it "Sex 'n' Drugs 'n' Reich 'n' Roll". Spidey-Peter Parker bloke can be Bernard, Neve Campbell can be Gillian, Mike Myers can be Steve (just go with it), Jon Goodman can be Rob and Ron Jeremy (or Derek Smalls) as Hooky. It'll be a riot.

The idea of NO being depicted in 'nother Film, think, is a Hideous idea. There is enough in print already.
Unless the scenario is played out w/ out explanation and w/ out details that might be best left to peoples' memories that were actually there.
Having said that. 24HrPP is gorgeous and different Anton Corbijn's work Control- the Film, look brilliantly done.

You sure about that one? I would think the drama over the Hacienda (soon to be documented in "How Not to Run a Club") would make for a nice bit in a movie. There was sex, drug and violence in that one.. well, maybe more just drugs and violence. I imagine that New Order would certainly have more stories to tell, being on the road, divorces, Ibiza... I don't know enough about Boston though, maybe you are right?

UmA could dye her hair and stand in depressions or holes to reduce her height. They made the Hobbits shorter in Lord of the Rings, they can do stuff on a cheaper budget. I don't know... I just like UmA, thou I doubt see would get much dialogue. Movies are always bigger than life, they could have a tall Gillian who talked, couldn't they?
You could always inject drama by dramatizing the whole thing like every other piece of media related to the group.
Bernard goes on a dreamtime journey and finds his spirit animal(koala clinging to a street lamp) while hanging upside-down on a medical rack in the U.S., inspiring him to team up with Johnny Marr. Montage scene of hopefuls auditioning to be fourth member of the band including Morrissey, Howard Devoto, about a half dozen gothic kids, Didi Ramone, that guy from Crispy Ambulance and then some normal people like a witch doctor. Gillian's hair catches fire during the Hand of God video shooting. Stephen is temporarily fired during the Technique tour and left in NYC with Simon Topping in bongo school when Bernard and Gretton do maths and calculate that it would be cheaper for the band to pay for the freight of their just the Roland drum machine instead of the Roland and Stephen. The movie would be titled "Intercourse" coinciding with the simultaneously released new album.
