I think they are for assorted pop/rock stars to give publicity to the magazine or organisation giving the awards by turning up and accepting them.

I suspect each award-giving organisation spends a lot of time working out who is likely to turn up, making sure they only give awards to artists that are in 'their league'.

Actually the state honours system works much the same way, when Michael Caine accepted a knighthood he was giving credibility to the honours system, thus increasing the value of the gongs given to all those time-serving civil servants and party donors. It was Michael Caine lending his prestige to the honour system not the other way round.

Roll on the NOOL awards. What would the NOOL award look like, I wonder?

Thumb rings are a major factor in the bisexual community. On the left thumb it means you 'take' on the right, you 'give' both thumbs means you do both. Doubt Hooky realises that though...
