Its got to the stage where I am in a right mess finacially, and the only thing I think I have of any financial value is my New order/Joy Division / electronic etc collection. I'm just logging it all on a spreadsheet, but think I might hit about 300 - 400 items to sell. I want to sell it as a whole so that it stays together as a collection. Does anyone have any idea's of the best way to do this. Obviously i want the most i can get, is Ebay the way forward, or does anyone know of any collection houses that sell these kind of things that would want to buy it. I'm at a loss as the best way to deal with this emotional time of my life (emotional about having to part with it)

I'm thinking you're going to have to break it up and sell it in pieces. I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy 300-400 New Order records in one fell swoop, unless you're willing to take it to a used record store or something, and take a big hit on the price.

King Bee records in Chorlton, Manchester will pay good money for NO / JD / Factory records. I suggest you give him a call and describe your collection to him, Hes a good bloke - bought most of my vinyl from him over the years.

My suggestion is breaking it up

People can just cherry pick bits and bobs they havent got then and you will be laughing...It should go in no time

If you're going to sell:

Identify the rarities. Find out the 'going' auction price. What does 'Record Collector' say? Sell the rarities separately.There's far more money in it for promos, rarities, signed items, etc. Contact David Sultan and look at his 'wants' list.
If you have all the 12" singles - sell them as a 12" singles collection, allowing for £1 - 3 each. Don't start your auction at too high a price. On an auction site, describe them well and use a good picture that YOU have taken.
As above for 7" singles. However, if you have all 9 colour sleeves for 'Procession', bundle them as a package - that's a rarity.
Go to the Buy/Sell/Trade section of this site and post your complete list - you have a ready made consumer base.
Bear in mind that New Order items no longer make much money - a non-Factory album can make as little as £1.50. They're not going for much more in major retail outlets.
If you can avoid it, don't sell. You'll probably regret it.

i still remember selling most of my vinyl when living in Leeds and CDs were the way forward. I took my stuff to a Collectors' shop. I was offered relatively little even then. Even the odd more precious or rare item wasn't valued that highly. I was a student, broke and needed funds to go on holiday. I sold most but couldn't bear to part with my Sordide or hessian Still. Whatever is left is in the loft. My son (recently converted 16 year old) came home the other day really pleased because he had used a record deck for the first time.

Needs must, I know, I did it! Do I regret selling my heavy carded UP or my different Ceremonies even with little value? Yes I do.

These days record shops eg X RECORDS in Bolton sell VG only 12 inch NEW ORDER/JOY DIVISION for as little as a £1 each.Values have really dropped since the INTERNET has made collecting EASY.Obviously it can work the other way too with prices.But i know that my PRICELESS collection is worth VERY little in the REAL world.I feel sorry for you if you have to sell them.But remember the music is still around.Hell sometimes i even think i better get a job soon in order to make ends meet.It is a tough old world out there.But to the guy that is selling if there is ever anything you need recording again be it CD/DVD etc just e-mail me.Now i gotta dash cos i have to polish my badges! :lol:

Sold quite a few of my NO/JD vynyls back when i was about 19 'cause i wanted to buy a fcuking car!! Regretted it ever since.Replaced most of the stuff over the years but it's not the same as having the orginals i bought and listened to for the first time .It's selling part of your soul! :nonono:

I've often uttered the immortal words mysel lad,can honestly say hand on heart DONT DO IT!

been collecting stuff for years and still am,lady :nuts: bangs on about how much space my collection takes up (esp posters) but tuff shit, its summat i like,summat i enjoy if you do sell your collecky then you will regret it,believe me.

I had loads of DM stuff,imports,vids,rare promos, the lot and sold em all one xmas cos a was skint,sold em for a song anall,regretted it ever since.

And perlease FFS dont go to cash converters or anywhere like that,they will only give summat like ten pence per item or some shit like that.

Try the buy/sell/trade forum,get yer list up there,if you want any advice about prices etc,then i'm only too willing to help,as will be a few more of the lads n lasses on here.

Or,try ebay with either a buy it now or reserve price auction if you wanna go down that route.

I dont think old records and cd's are worth anything in this age of iPod's. Even the fact that they've got some real history behind them and iconic artwork.

If you take them to Vinyl Exchange or somewhere they'd give you about 50p per vinyl and maybe a couple of quid for original Factory cd's.

There's a shop in Birkenhead that was selling someone's massive collection of Factory stuff late 2006 for peanuts. They were letting the Factory cassette boxes go for a fiver.

That says it all. You'd be better selling something you can replace in 12 months time.

keep what you want, (in your personal opinion), the most valuable to you and get rid of the rest!

it will haunt you unless you've really, really, and absolutely made up your mind.

Another don't do it! I sold various (relatively) valuable bits of my Sarah records collection when in dire need of cash years ago and have spent a lot of time and money over the last few years trying to replace it... If you have a working kidney, that might be a better bet... :nod:

I've been a member of this site for years now, and never had the confidence to join in any discussions.

I really dont want to sell it, but with two young kids now, the prioirities have changed. One comment posted was its selling my soul, I couldnt agree more, in fact it feels worse than that. This music, this gift we have been given from 4 band members has been with me all of my 'life' - i remember the day it all changed, the tune that did it - it was like being hit with a hammer and I started a new life that day regarding music taste.

I'm not daft, i know I'm starring down the barrel of a gun here regarding getting any big monies, it aint gonna happen. But you have all come back with really good constructive comments, some great tips, I will try and do some investigation before deciding what to do. i really do thank you all for taking time and effort to reply, really appreciate it

Just noticed you come from chester, whatever you decide DONT take it to Grey & Pinks on Brooke St. He'll give you nowt. Like i said earlier, sell your music system or something that in 12 months time you can replace.

Then there's always the insurance scam... (I cant believe i've suggested that...) :laugh:

Get one of the kids to do a paper round,and send the other one up the chimney.Problem solved........Thank me later. Anyway you would probably just spend the money on beer and fags and then just fritter the rest away!!
