Unreleased NO music (no DON'T get excited, it's just a question)

Something that's often struck me has been that as far as JD are concerned, it's quite easy to identify all the studio sessions including the dates (obviously because there were so few of them). However, in the case of NO, there is obviously stuff that was recorded but has never been released. I KNOW this has been discussed MANY times on here, particularly post Retro, but what my question is, is there a definitive list of unreleased studio material that people are actually aware of (without having to search the entire forum)? Also, is there any information anywhere as to the recording dates and locations for NO studio material, or should I just look in the discography? Thanks in advance.

I take your first comment as a compliment! So what IS the 81-84 stuff that you know about?

There are a couple of rehearsal tapes in existence, featuring early versions of Hurt, and some jamming that includes very primitive riffs for This Time Of Night, Paradise and I think Ecstacy and Ultraviolence amongst others, but these are just the band jamming rather than demo versions of songs. There's also a tape of 1988 rehearsals featuring some of the riffs later used on Technique.

In terms of demos, there is only really a Sunrise instrumental demo, an As It Is When It Was demo and a couple of takes on Let's Go with different lyrics to those which eventually surfaced.

David Sultan has a tape with a couple of tracks with unfamiliar names from the Technique era, as we've not heard them we can't say if they are unreleased songs or not. Besides that, there isn't a lot that didn't make the cut, they've pretty much used everything that ever got as far as being knocked into a song. Homage got scrapped in 1980 and Skullcrusher in 1984, but no others as far as I know. Skullcrusher of course was used on the Salvation soundtrack eventually.

Obviously there's also the leftovers from the Sirens' sessions, yet to see the light of day.

Perhaps we'll see them reworked by Bad Lieutenant ...

Don't forget "Too Late" from the Peel sessions, which never made it onto anything... unless they morphed it into something else.

Hmmm yes, I had forgotten that one. They didn't recycle any of it into tracks used on the following albums, so I guess it is a genuine lost/purged track.

Having listened to the Peel Sessions in the car recently I'm still amazed Too Late got so completely dumped...

I like "Too Late" a lot...a real "drunken mellow" track...

Shit yeah you're right, I'd completely forgotten about that! Wish we'd taped that soundcheck, a few photos don't do it enough justice. Our own private gig, complete with Hooky in an armchair!

One thing about Norder is that stuff did always seem to get recyled, The first airing of TPK has parts of This time of night in it and Temptation is really an evolution of EGG.

One thing is true - while we know all or most session dates of Joy Division, we know none of those of New Order (save for the Peel Session). How come?

He may have got a few seconds on video, but didn't record any audio, and definitely didn't get the unreleased one.
