The Stone People

It was interesting to witness 'The Stone Roses' debut album 'The Stone Roses' (ingenuous) become nomintated as The Best Album of All Time' this week ... beating even 'The Beatnicks' , 'Elvis Pieman', 'John Lennon' and 'Oasis' etc. - personally, I think this album is that good, I bought it more-or-less the week it was released and am not surprised about its popularity which has grown over the last few years as more people appreciate the quality. The second album was horse shit but never mind.

Thing is, do you think a New Order album should have been at the top? ... or thinking on a more broader spectrum do New Order even merit being considered for the top spot ahead of the more popular bands and solo artists of the last few decades? - if a NO album is to be ranked as 'The Best Album of All Time by Anyone Ever' - then which album would that be.

I must admit that i also rated the STONE ROSES and own a very rare white label demo of them B4 they got LARGE. Best album in the ROCKETS TAKE OFF PAD is LOW LIFE or VIDA POBRE. ROCKET RESPONSE TIMES ARE POOR MICK

Absolutely all albums are in contention. The Joy Division material is arguably more innovative than New Order's which could make them a stronger contender. I'm not sure how people would take to Closer though, it is very dark.

I've always considered that the Order's true magnificence lies in their strength as a singles band.

Really? ... I've always thought them an album band. I prefer the un-released songs such as 'Leave Me Alone' and 'Sooner than You Think' etc. to 'True Faith' and 'Blue Monday' etc. - not that they are better, but they are as good which is unusual for most pop / rock bands.

Have to agree to disagree with you, my fellow millinery fancier. My Top 10 New Order tunes are predominantly singles. I wonder whether you would think the same if, say True Faith and co were never released as singles.. Perhaps they now suffer from overexposure.

Its a valid point Depthcharge, however, having listened in equal measures to almost all NO material I do not feel tainted by chart singles. Just to clarify the point, I'm not saying that released singles are not as good as un-released album songs, I'm saying NO are a band who have released albums with no 'fillers' ... whereas most bands are happy to release utter filth with 8 stocking fillers and only 1 stocking.

Of course it's better than the Roses! This is a NO forum, not a Roses forum! (meaning I'm a NO/JD fan, not a Roses fan!). I just tried to say that the Roses debut was a very fine album, wich I'm shure no one disagrees (after all, they're from Manchester!)

Well, allow me to butt in and throw in my twopenne'thworth, but The Stone Roses - for the relatively short time they were "at the forefront of the scheme of things" - were probably the most ridiculously over-hyped band Britain has ever seen.....and that debut album, fine though it is, suffered from a frankly tedious overkill of hyperbole and accolades completely out of proportion to its actual contents....merely a passable - if somewhat derivative - 60's-psychedelic-influenced collection of songs, and nothing much else.... it's certainly NOT the groundbreaking opus everyone makes it out to be.

With all that kind of hysteria to live up to, is it any wonder the band found it hard to maintain any kind of momentum in its wake?? Everyone knows what happened next....they simply couldn't live up to all the expectations and surpass the (supposedly) high standards they set themselves with that initial high benchmark, so the only way was down..... My personal opinion only, but I absolutely detested "Fools Gold" so imagine my shock when the single after that ("One Love") was even worse....!

So, I certainly wouldn't nominate The Stone Roses as the best album ever, nope, I'd have to say that "Low Life" by New Order is TEN TIMES better - and more groundbreaking - than TSR could ever hope to be and even then I couldn't say it was the best album EVER in the whole wide world.....cos that would just be fucking stupid wouldn't it?

God, these tedious lists! Why do people keep bothering with this kind of lark? How many variations on the same theme must we have to keep taking week in week out?? Are people's memories really so short now? I mean - all it bascially amounts to is these fucking critics - or the public - being allowed back into the same room as before and simply rearranging the same few pieces of furniture into a different order so to speak - so that every one of these TOP!! 20!! ULTIMATE!! BEST!! EVER!! ALBUMS!! OF!! ALL!! TIME!! get to have a turn at number one..... groan....yawn.....zzz...zzz....zzzz

another one of my fave nostalgia bands (apologies if mis-spelt, Mr MICK). best opening track on an album- i wanna be adored. or ceremony on substance.

Bugger the SR's, what about The Smiths ??? The only other band who are regulary checked on this board are the SR's and never any mention of The Smiths (whose output just blows the Roses out of the water Meat is Murder, The Smiths, The Queen is Dead etc) and then theres the Electronic connection.
