Closer Album Title

Just interested in how people view the album's title...

Whether it's "closer" as in "come nearer". Or "closer" as in "the end".

Always thought of it as the former, but it is certainly an interesting thought that it might have been intended by Ian as the latter. Do we know who was actually responsible for the title?

funny... I was explaining this (deliberate) ambiguity to someone yesterday. and then I was just reminded of it 10 mins ago because the film of the same name has just started on c4

it's a double entendre. that makes it artsy, which is why factory put it out. if they called it "i'll be dead soon so you can all cash in on my legacy," factory would have immediately dropped the band from the label. i got the story myself from tony wilson's bloated carcass.

I was not aware of this thing about the title. Anyway, it reminded me of Nirvana's album "Bleach", where it is either pronounced like the whitening solution or like the sound of puking.

Following the logic of the sides of Unknown Pleasures ("Outside" and "Inside"), it should be the former.

I'd have to agree with Popey here... think it was ambigious enough to make it a thinker of a title.. you could take it so many ways that it worked from all angles

Personally I always thought it was Closer to the "truth", the essence of the matter while at the same time meaning Closer to an "unconditional positive regard" for one another, Closer to a means to an end of hate and division, Closer to (social) love.

Closer than Close. Closer is just intriguingly coincidentally relevant. The matter is closed.

Even better is 'Still'....does it mean..

• Still as an adjective, 'not moving/at peace'
• Still as in what remains, 'people are still listening/JD are still highly regarded'
• Still as a verb, to make something stationary, prevent it from moving
• Still as in notwithstanding 'still, at least they made good music'

I always thought that if NO did a final album it would be called Division, describing the current rift and also bringing the word full circle, from their origins to the end. From the past until completion, as it were!!

just realized i have closer inscribed on me wedding ring,, interpretted it as" closer together "and to cement the FACt got married on 27.6.which was the "offical " release date for closer.
