Well, I was with him when he DJed in Montreal... I can assure you he's doing it for real.. even screwed up completely once!

Are you a DJ? And did you register here just to bring that up?

Sorry dude, but have been misinformed.

First of all, definition: a disc jockey or DJ is a person who selects and plays prerecorded music for an audience. (source: wikipedia)

Second, New Order are pioneers in 12" remixes. All of them knows how to mix, and did remix a few of their own tracks.

Then, it is not that often nowadays that DJs do spins, scratches, etc. CDs are now part of the DJs record collection, aside from vinyls. I don't think you go to club scenes nowadays.

Indeed!

Awww, looks like someone's after some attention!

Two separate threads to mention the same piece of film? How sad is that?

Hooky can DJ. But he's just not very good at it.

He's still playing exactly the same stuff as he was 4-5 years ago and still making lots of little fcuk ups as he does so.

But people still pay for his services and he'll still get people dancing and jumping around so I really don't see what the issue is. Good luck to him, I say.

New Order were often a bit shit with their instruments too, weren't they?! Still got in a good crowd though.

And next week we can discuss......... "HAS STEVE GOT A TIGER IN HIS TANK?"

Most of the people that go and listen to him are not really clubbers, so it doesn't matter.

Somebody here can't spell "can't"! :p

Who cares whether he's the world's best mixer/DJ, he still entertains.

:smoking:

if he gets the crowd up for a dance. surely that's the main thing.

No offence to Hooky, but I'm sure the MAIN thing is to get the invoice paid.

The fact that he does is probably what's really pissing off Mr Sour Grapes original poster.

Has your old man not got a copy of Go Home Productions "Get Your Freak On" vs "Love Will Tear Us Apart"?!

I really can't see that there's a better Joy Division mash-up out there in circulation. Absolute quality track.

Better than Captain & Tenile vs LWTUA, or indeed Curtis and Grace Jones exchanging lines on She's/I've Lost Control.

Sort it out, Jack!

Who cares ? And who's the asshole ?

Funnily, some similar topic have been posted on some French boards just before the Brussels Factory Night with some nasty intentions, I guess.

I've nothing to add to the right answers that have been made here :abovelol:

if anything, at least he's getting his heart pumping a bit.

I don't see the relevence of your post. Whether he "fakes" a set or not. Who gives a flying shit? He moved the dance floor when I seen him last year in SF and danced my ass off! I don't recall anyone wondering whether his sets were fake or not. The only thing I recall was everyone having a great time. Looks like someone has a a little too much time in their hands...

Go back under the bridge, troll.

Oh and happy holidays, asshole!

I just think it's a bit sad that someone is so jealous of Peter Hook that they have to post the same load of crap twice. When I've seen him on stage, yes he's made a couple of mistakes, but he's been DJing live.

Someone on that excuse for a thread that was linked in the first post makes out that Hooky was anti-DJs... Maybe someone should try telling that to DJs like Arthur Baker, Jellybean, etc. who Hooky first worked with 25 years ago...

Couldn't it just be the audio isn't even synced to the video? Who knows where this video came from?

even if we gave you the fact that his dj'in is mediocre how does that rub off on his ability with the bass?

Hah hah hah hah ah!

You are a fucking idiot.

Hoooky isn't a DJ.

Peter Hook is a MUSICIAN.

He is a MUSICIAN in one of the most important bands ever, and band that defined and influenced forever the direction of dance music.

I am so sick of the way people idolise fucking DJs. DJ's are not musicians, they are not arrangers, they are not producers.

DJ's are people who mix OTHER PEOPLES MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS.

DJ'S DO NOT WRITE, RECORD, OR PERFORM MUSIC.

DJ'S PLAY OTHER PEOPLE'S MUSIC.

AND....ITS NOT THAT HARD TO DO.

I am a musician. I am a DJ. Guess which one takes more ability to do? Writing fucking songs, not spinning records in a club.

DJ-ing is a fucking cakewalk. Its a joke. You are playing records and twisting a few knobs to mix and beatmatch a few songs together. Yes you have to have a good sense of flow, or rhythm, and of reading the crowd....and some DJs can do a lot of awesome cutting and scratching and I respect that.

A good DJ is awesome, a good DJ is fun to dance to.

But even a good DJ is not a musician, or a songwriter.

I'd love to get a DJ to sit down at a piano, write a song, and then use synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines to turn that piano based song into a beautiful and moving dance track ala Blue Monday, True Faith, or The Perfect Kiss.

Could most DJ's do that?

Fuck no. They would not even know where to start. They can't compose music.

Peter Hook does DJ. Is he a good DJ...maybe or maybe not.

But Peter Hook is one hell of a musician. The lead basslines that he writes and plays in New Order songs beat out any fucking Disc Jockey any day of the week.

So, go fuck off mate.

Congratulations troll.

I saw the local story on InTheMix too and all the accompanying hate dished out by juveniles with little regard or respect for a guy who's done more for music than they ever will in a million years, combined.

You seem to have totally misread your audience on this website. What did you think you'd prove here? You were letting us all in on some big secret? Problem is that most people here know Hooky is no Shadow on the decks and most don't give a rat's. They go to see him because they respect the guy and dig his tunes, however they're spun.

So how about you fcuk off back to your Tiesto and glowsticks, twit. You came here trying to trash Hooky and ended up getting schooled.

Am I the only one who (a) doesn't give a flying about Hooky or Barney DJing and (b)finds the whole escapade a little last chance saloon (to bolster the pension fund)?

Probably.

To be honest I can see why someone who wants to make it as a DJ, and spends ages practising his 'craft' would be pissed off to see a celebrity like Hooky parachute in and get paid top fees without having to put in the effort. I bet for every superstar DJ making a living at it there are a million frustrated wannabees.

However, I still can't take DJing entirely seriously as a vocation, compared with actually playing an instrument and writing music. I suspect the ratio of wannabes to stars in the DJ world is high precisely because the actual amount of 'skill' involved is pretty small so tiny differences in performance lead to huge differences in the reward.

Its not as if Hooky was using his celeb status to do something that really mattered. Now, if he uses his fame to try his hand at heart surgery or running a nuclear power plant I might want to object.
