The feature-length documentary Joy Division is written and directed by Grammy nominee Grant Gee (Radioheads Meeting People Is Easy, Gorillaz Demon Days Live) and co-written by acclaimed journalist and writer Jon Savage (Englands Dreaming: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock and Beyond). The producers are Tom Astor and Tom Atencio of Hudson Productions Ltd., and Brown Owl Films Jacqui Edenbrow.

In 1976 four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester who went to see the Sex Pistols, founded Joy Division, the first band in the post-punk movement by later emphasizing not anger and energy, but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the 80s, according to AllMusic.com. The documentary explores the profound legacy of the bands collective musical genius and singular vision as well as their continued influence over thirty years.....

Featuring the unprecedented participation of the surviving band members (commonly known as New Order), the film examines the bands story as depicted through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audio tapes. With poignant narratives from the surviving members of the band Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, as well as accounts from musician Genesis P. Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle), the late, legendary Factory Records owner Tony Wilson, iconic Factory Records graphic artist Peter Saville, photographer/ filmmaker Anton Corbijn, Annik Honor and others, the film is a fresh visual account of a time and place. Joy Division chronicles a time of great social and political change in England and tells the untold story of four men who transcended economic and cultural barriers to produce an enduring musical legacy.

The movie was one of the highlights at the British Film Festival here in Tel-Aviv (Israel) and was screened on the 2nd night of the festival alongside Control, 10 days ago. It's a very good documentary, which tells the story of the band and the city of Manchester in a fascinating way, with great and also very funny interviews. Don't miss.

Obviously there is a lot of stuff we already knew, but there are plenty of clips to get even the die-hards salivating - some What's On and Plan K footage along with bits from A Factory Flick. The talking head contributions are better than the normal run of the mill lot that get wheeled out for these things - Kevin Cummins, Liz Naylor, Malcolm Whitehead, Terry Mason, RCA boss Richard Searling and Annik Honore amongst others. About the only thing that tainted it slightly was allowing Genesis P Orridge a credible ammount of screen time, but at least he didn't embelish his May 18th story any further to 'actually I was talking to Ian on the phone as he put the rope around his neck'...

Its only my opinion, but it pisses all over Control.

The eagerly awaited new documentary about Joy Division is to be released in the UK on May 2.

'Joy Division' was directed by Grant Gee, previously responsible for the acclaimed Radiohead 'OK Computer' tour documentary 'Meeting People Is Easy'.

The new documentary follows hot on the heels of Anton Corbijn ’s movie 'Control', which was released in 2007, and concentrated its story on the band’s tragic frontman Ian Curtis, who committed suicide in 1980.

The new documentary examines the band’s story through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos, period films and newly discovered audiotapes.

There are also interviews with Tony Wilson, the boss of the band's label Factory Records, who died last year. The rest of the band also contribute, as does Annik Honore, the Belgian journalist who Curtis was having an affair with.

Today I received my dvd from Norway. I will watch it in the evening so I can't comment on the documentary quite yet.

Unfortunately, the dvd store appears to be out of stock at the moment. That's what "Ikke på lager" means. Suppose they will get more copies soon.

Got this two weeks ago, fulfilled all my expectations and then some! As someone said at JD Central: one should definitely watch this before watching Control.

No english subtitles???
