As a fan of the music, rather than a completist collector, the good news about this release is that there is absolutely no reason at all to buy it. If there had been some 'new' rarities on it, there might have been some temptation, but...
I listened once to a friend's copy of "Permanent", and I won't even bother to go that far with this.
This release is intended as a compilation for people who will only ever buy one JD album.
This will be going in the same bin as the recent Morrissey Greatest Hits compilation for me; the bargain bin to be precise (before I part with any cash).
To be fair to Mozzer though at least he chucked in a couple of new tracks to make it all a bit more worthwhile even if those new tracks were deadly dull.
Not expecting "new" material from Joy Division natch but something to make it a bit more interesting would've been welcome... even a tastefully remixed LWTUA or something. Oh wait they've done that with Permanent 1995 already.
Considering this CD contains the 11th release of "Love Will Tear Us Apart", isn't it about time they reissued "Love Will Tear is Apart, Again" (which, barring the 1988 Atmosphere CD has never been officially released digitally). What about a chronological collection of all the local and national radio sessions?
Nah, stuff together a haphazard selection of songs in any old order, put a photo on the front, and charge the earth for it?
What the record industry thinks you want is shoddily designed and sequenced, unnecessary compilations. Like Motorheads umpteen compilations, and the annual Elvis Presley release, it seems that a year cannot go by without some new configuration of Joy Division’s miniscule body for work. By now, surely everyone who has the slightest interest in the band owns the material. I can’t see this selling many copies.
That’s the arrogance of big business the world over : it shovels a shit sandwich at you, and expects you to be grateful. Rarely has the words “music” and “business” felt so dirty, so unclean, next to each other. This fetid idea - the third Joy Division best of compilation - is conceptually and artistically the equivalent of necrophilic grave robbing. At best, I could describe it as morbid opportunism. At worst, it’s an insulting and degrading attempt to fleece the faithful with yet another pointless compilation that does nothing but diminish the group.
Joy Division are merely an asset to be plundered, raped, and exploited to the maximum commercial effect. This third Joy Division ‘best of’ pointlessly repeats the previous, excellent “Substance” and the equally pointless “Permanent” with a selection of the-same-songs-as-the-other-compilation-in-a-slightly-different order.
They really need a custodian who oversees the bands catalogue with care and attention.

Sure, there's "Heart And Soul" that's a pretty good box set, albeit one that reproduces the 2 original albums. And there's "Permanent" - a pointless waste of time that I didn't buy : I only got the 12" for the Arthur Baker Remix of LWTUA - something that bafflingly isn't on CD.
And then there's the three expanded reissues from last year. And the two Fractured Music live albums. And teh Fractured Music limited box set with extra live record and T-Shirt that I didn't buy. This is worse than the Doors releasing every soundcheck as a limited-edition live album. And the unofficial Martin Hannet Mixes tape.
They really need a custodian who oversees the bands catalogue with care and attention. Why, for fucks sake, they haven't released an official DVD that compiles the Here Are The Young Men CHS, promo films and TV appearances I have NO FUCKING IDEA. People might actually buy that - instead, if I were a JD completist, I'd have the 3 rereleases of LWTUA, each album four times (Fac LP, Fac CD, Heart & Soul, Expanded Editions), a total of 6 concerts, and 3 'best of' compilations. And not ONE official DVD. Or one official, 'Complete' Radio Sessions CD.
FOR CHRIST SAKE, STOP THIS. It's devaluing and cheapening the work. Whoever is responsible for this merely sees the bands Body of Work as an asset to be cash-generating product that sits on the racks next to baked beans in Asda.
Next, they'll remix Ian's between song mumblings into an ambient album and package with it a bonus remix CD featuring a Paul Okenfold Mix of "Atmosphere", Thee Almighty Trouser Wankers 12" extended Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaance Mix of "Transmission", and the Extended Party Whoop version of "Decades" featuring Sly And Robbie.
You can find the Arthur Baker Remix of Love Will Tear Us Apart on the Canadian CD single.
Needless,pointless cash-in aimed at the 'I own 1 cd by Joy Division' brigade.But can you really blame Warners? The're just a business & it's a money spinner on the back of 'Control',tho' exactly how much money they'll make from it is argueable.A shame,& it's demeaning the legacy to the point of taking the piss

Exactly how I feel. Wonder why they didn't fill the main disc though (14 songs? What is that, about 50 minutes?). Also, the bonus disc should have been a sampler of the live JD releases (Still, Peel, Preston, Les Baines) - of course if this was aimed at newbies Preston might have scared some of them off!

Preston generally has that effect on people. Thats why I left 20 years ago.
If you want to 'get back at' the record company, here's a 'safe' though slightly indirect way to do it:
Wait until the release hits the 'bargain bins'.
Buy a copy at half (or less) the original marked price. The record shop will have paid a 'dealer price' of at least £7 for each 'unit'. They're then selling them at £5 a time. Therefore the record shop loses money on every sale - they just want to get rid of redundant stock. In the future, their central buying department will look at sales figures for Joy Division compilations and won't order anywhere near the same amount for their stores for what they call a 'scale out' - a set number of copies per store, depending on the demographics. That means that the record company will think again about releasing yet another 'same old' CD as they know they won't have so many 'units' ordered. The record companies aren't in it for the music - they're in it for the profit (they're a business, so that's understandable).
You could alternatively buy two or three UK releases and put them on Ebay for a couple of pounds more than you paid - that way, People in Buy/Sell/Trade or Ebay bidders in foreign countries get copies cheaper than they would via HMV or Amazon.
Again, the record company ends up losing out due to reduced orders.
Eventually they get the message and the crap back-catalogue repackaged stuff dwindles.
If they want to sell material, they have to give the fans something new, and if they're sensible, they do it with unreleased live recordings, remixes, etc. as they tried with the three JD re-released albums.
It's a bit convoluted, I know, but in the long term, it works...

I thought this was another Amazon balls-up but I saw this monstrosity out yesterday. Did the boys have anything whatsoever to do with it?... As I said before, 'Permanent' is a decent enuff best-of and H+S tells you everything you need (maybe a bit too much). Anyone actually gonna buy this?
