It's appropriate to name Liverpool Airport after John Lennon because that's the first place he went with his first royalty cheque: flew straight to London and never went back.
Wilson stayed put and continued to be a proud Mancunian. Something permanent that stays in the city centre (like Wilson did) and makes us all proud would be more appropriate. The airport is some distance out of town. Wilson would want to be in the middle.
The other reason that the Manchester Airport won't be named after Wilson, of course, is that he's not very popular outside of a certain circle of people in the Manchester area. He alienated quite a few people in his time.
And besides, what better name for an airport could there be than 'Manchester'?

Yes Gaz is right. What I should have said was you can't do better than to name an airport after one of the great cities of the world.
