I emailed him a couple of years ago about the 335. It was around £1800 and a years waiting list!

Went for an Epiphone Jack Casady in the end.

The Shergold slays me every time although his Rick on the JD stuff is awesome. Songs like Disorder, Twenty-Four Hours and LWTUA. Using a six-string was really unusual at the time so you had the combination of an unusual bass guitar, Hooky's angular, high-up style and the SOUND. At a time when bass was hardly present in a final mix, his was well up front, effected and well...just brilliant really.

PS I owned a TB-303 briefly and yes, the programming was truly arcane! There are myriad stories about their misuse during house music's reign (three blokes tweaking one on-stage at once etc). Am I right in thinking the Order never used one?

He's had at least three Yamaha basses over the years, a sunburst one in JD and early New Order, a BB800 for a while in 1980 (when the gear was stolen), and then the red BB1200 from 83-ish onwards.

he had at least 4 red bb1200s in monaco and 6 marathons 4 black, 1 white and a red one with a brass scratch plate, the 335 sounds the best through his old ampeg rig, cranked up, well , i think so, it just has a bit more balls than the yamaha even tho they have the same components, feels nicer too, it has a jazz neck.

well, apart from 1 that is in the studio, and that is on its last legs he also got a red yamaha off a geezer that turned up at a gig to get it signed, hooky wouldnt let him leave until he had sold him the bass, another on for his collection...

Probably for the best, he can actually play one, I've been playing girl's basses (aria, bass collection) for so long, I'd just hurt myself with a marathon6.

Interesting. That could be due to the body resonance; I can get pretty close to his sound with my semi-hollow.

I've never quite understood why he uses it live but not in the studio (though apparently he likes the feedback); I've always assumed the sound was inferior somehow but maybe it's a weight/look thing. Usually the semihollow is the studio instrument (guessing that's at least partly why Barney got the SG Junior). Supposedly semi's have less sustain, but he's said that's not an issue either. It's hard to compare his live sound to his studio sound, due not only to the circumstances of the recordings but the fact that his live sound is often pretty distorted.

Just going by sound I'd have voted the Yamaha in the poll (went with the Shergold because it's such a rarity and the only one I've bothered to track down and get - should try a Yamaha someday).

It was someone in the States as I recall. I've got a sunburst Marathon 6 I briefly considered asking him to sign at one point; when I heard that story I thought better of the idea.

I've always liked my Fender Squier bass. *shrug*

i like the shergold he has. i have a lil esp bass. i like esp's. i just don't like the neck of mine.doesn't fit my hand well enough.
