NO/JD COVER VERSIONS

So, people, what are your favorite cover versions of NO/JD songs? I do confess an unconditional love for Frente!'s "BLT" and Swans'"LWTUA". There's also a "love vigilantes" cover from the 80's that I used to like, but I forgot the name of the band. Oyster Band, maybe?

I don't like any, I'm not against cover versions per se, a couple of good examples being Hendrix's All along the watchtower, ST Etienne's Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Kiss and Make Up. That said tampering with New Order is almost always a bad idea as is pretending to be them, Con-Can etc.

It will be interesting to see all these 15 bands in Manchester doing covers of JD/NO songs. Particularly looking forward to "The Fred West Experience" doing a rendition of Regret ;)

In 1983 I listend to 'No Please Thank You Paul Young' about 5,000 times as my cousin (who was a bird I might add) played the cunt on heavy rotation every day. I was staying with her down in Devon when I was a very small chicken and years later it suddenly dawned on me that 'bloodey hell' it was a JD song, the most popular at that!!! ... anyway secretly I like Paul's version and the album 'Yes Thank You Au Revoir' (I mean, I really like it) and imagine getting your head around the silky Pauline Young version compared with Ian Curtains? - it was like chalk within cheese.

Some cover versions are ace, Ferente is the obvious selection but scanning through this site's collection I found a top notch Japanese version of Burger, Lettuce and Tomasco ... please, everyone rush to hear it. It's as camp as a camping stove but its shit hot. I was even thinking about compiling a disk of the cover versions so there.

Incidentally, The Smiths cover version album of some years ago sounded promising with so many supposed top class 'alternative' bands on it ... anyway I bought it and it was utter dog turd. I'm very dissappointed that king Moz even allowed the filthy badger to be released into the stratosphere.

I've just had delivery of LWTUA by Biz which is still as good as it sounded when played by Arthur Baker before Finsbree.

I have always been a fan of some N.O covers and Frente's BLT has always been one of my fave. But did someone else listen to the cover of BLT (again) of Chang Hui Mei (I am not kidding)? I dont know if she is from Hong-Kong but it's quite a cool cover of the song. Does someone else know more about it? I have read too that the Kings of Convenience did a cover of the Eternal on a local Norwegian JD tribute album (under the name of Skog). Did anybody hear it?

It's quite an interesting topic for me because I am starting w/some friends a project concerning a Tribute album to New Order. I mean, it's only a start for the moment (not even Warner France knows about it) and i am not sure if we will be able to make it. But we have already contacted local groups (from Lyon in France, i mean) and they have started sending us demos. There are also some Swedish groups, a musician from NZ and hopefully some aussie bands. Most of them are not signed on any labels. Then i was wondering... If u are interested and especially if Sebastien and Nicolas are okay about it, i could keep u posted about it, maybe send the demos to the website if the musicians, Nic&Seb dont mind. Then u could tell me what u think about it. And if any of u would like to participate and play a song on the CD... Well, u are just more than welcome! I mean, i think it would be a cool idea to have some of u guys on it.

Didn't Velocity Girl do a cover of Your Silent Face? Haven't heard that one in a long, long time.

I kinda like the Poi Dog Pondering's version of Love Vigilantes, Joe Zangie's True Faith, Judson Leach's BLT, Frente's BLT, and a few covers of Regret.

Nothing beats the originals though. :)

Seeing as I am a Kendra Smith fan, I've always loved her version of Heart And Soul on that JD tribute album.

Francois, the band that Im playing in might be interested. We're an originals band but love playing New Order covers for fun. Our singer has been playing around on his mac all week and has finally nailed Everythings Gone Green so we're going to give that a shot this weekend.

I've got Galaxie 500 doing Ceremony on a 12" somewhere at home. I seem to recall that was quite good, maybe I'll dig it out again.

(The Oyster Band's Love Vigilantes was shocking, by the way!!)

I never liked that Galaxie 500 version of Ceremony, they changed the lyrics ! The Oyster Band version of Love Vigilantes failed to live up to the hype.

What do people think of Moby's version of New Dawn Fades ?

If changed lyrics count then for sheer audacity the best has to be Divines 'Love Reaction' which was itself covered live by Norder.

I've always wanted to hear the Sam Fox version of Subculture which I believe Hooky said was the best version he had heard.
