Cassette Regret

Anyone out there pick up the original cassette release of Regret with 'The Original New Order' mix on? ... whether or not it was the original demo version (slightly tweaked for commercial release) or not, it is a curious version. The majestic (JD800?) sweeping synth solo towards the end and the interesting choice of drum loops add to the flavour of this unique mix. Barney's vocals are very set-back (soft) with the now famous guitar-riff drifting in and out between choruses.

I haven't seen (or noticed) this version anywhere else but the original casette so I doubt it is readily available ... worth picking up anyway, if only to hear what New Order originally intended for this song. With the Fire Island re-mix, this is possibly an essential version alongside the original (Republic) release.

How does it compare to the New Order mix on the CD single? Is it the same or different?

Hmmm.. I have said cassette single but have never even unwrapped the thing- it was a completist purchase only. Must give it a run.

In all honesty Patrick I do not have the original CD single (I don't think). I ventured into CD territory very late in the day as I believed vinyl was superior thus held back on even buying any CD's at all. As such I only bought the 12" vinyl which had the terrible gunslinger mixes on the reverse side. The mix on the CD could be the same, but I couldn't be certain without having the disk.

If your version is very synth heavy with only a few guitar parts it could be the same mix. Most notable is the luscious synth solo towards the end, reminiscent of driving through an enormous sprawling city at night (or something). Funnily enough I began the switch to tinny CD's after this CD single release which I think was Ruined on an Album, World The Price of Eggs and Spooky Gerbils.

I would urge you to try it. Having not seen it since the cassette release it could be classified 'lost classic'. The synth solo in my opinion was one of the highlights of the entire Republican campaign, its only subtle but its a piece of magic.

Saying all that the next time I play it the tape will most probably snap in twain.

Morning...i have all the CDs,promos and 12 inch records for this released in BRITAIN and i was collecting the cassettes at that time BUT i did not get this.Wish i had so i could help more! ROCKET MIck plus i got the GERMAN promos and some other OFF SHORE ones..silly cos most of them are not very good apart from the sleeves.

As you know, Huntsy, I don't listen to Regret every day (although I definitely did when that CD single unexpectedly appeared in stores) but the New Order mix certainly did have far less of the "lush" guitars (I will try hard not to say "saccharine"). It was a much sparer sound, arguably purer, probably would have been much less popular if it had been this version that had been released.

Yes I doubt this original mix would have charted as highly as UK no. 4, interesting how wildly different it is to the actual release which was guitar laden. Sugary is something I never associated with this song, I always thought it sounded quite rocky, I put it to you that its the drum loops (first time used by the Order) that create a possible sweetening of the deal, not the guitars.

I think we agreed to differ on this song a while ago, and between times I assumed you had grown to like it after realising your earlier mistakes.

It's the version I have on the CD single, or at least from what I read in your posts, seems to be. I love it, too!

Actually the last few times I listened to it, it sounded OK, Huntsy. But for some reason, when I'm not actually listening to it, I have this ineradicable association with the following:

"All I want is a room somewhere, far away from the cold night air, with one enormous chair..."

The bass solo and the synth solo near the end of Regret - New Order mix is some of the best music I've heard. Listen to the low synth chords during the verses. It's just beautiful.

Not withstanding what has been said already, I'm 99% certain that there is only one "New Order" mix of Regret, and it can be found on the CD single, the 7" and (I thought!) the cassingle. Is it definitely listed as "The Original New Order Mix" on the cassingle? I only played mine once before chucking it in a drawer.

OK, now you've forced me to dig into the dC archives...

It would appear that the version in question (the cassette b-side) is indeed the 5.10 New Order mix, also found on various international cassettes, CD singles and 7"s.

I can recall playing this mix to death when it came out, it wasn't that I preferred it to the guitar mix but it was a beautiful compliment to it. And it holds up well.

I've been listening to this mix quite a lot in the car of late, and those sentiments get no argument from me dC.

If it is indeed the "New Order Mix" that Huntsy's bangin on about (which it most likely is), I think it's pretty dang good also, however Hooky's contribution on this one is subtle (ie minimal, but not as much as on 'World'). I actually really like Barn's guitars on the 'proper' version though, as he has a unique aproach to playing - I guess that's why I love GR so much, with all that guitarry stuff in there... CTB

Well, Huntsy, you are right. That mix is magnificent. And your description of the synth solo is perfect. The Fire Island mix is also very good. I guess at this point it is only the album version that doesn't entirely do it for me.
