"Joy Division" documentary to "New Order Story"

Having recently watched the Grant Gee "Joy Division" documentary, I feel it is not just a great companion piece to "Control", but more so, a better companion piece to the "New Order story". Both are documentaries, contain actual interviews with the band, and includes the same kind of editing, weirdly/poetic/artsy feel to them.

I can't wait to watch them back to back when I get my DVD of the documentary from Amazon.

Another random thought while on the matter:

As much as "Control" was about the story of Ian and Joy Division, I am going to say again.. we need (OK, maybe 'want' is a better word) a New Order movie. New Order's mythological rise from Joy Division's death is a great story. Full of drama (death, divorce, drugs, rock n' roll, the Hacienda) itself would make a good movie as well.

And before anyone says it, no, I don't think "24 hr party people" does it.

I think a film about New Order from 1981 to 93 would be an awesome thing.....and could work as some sort of sequel to Control.

Why end at '93? Setting up for a trilogy?

There could be key scenes like:

• early on, going off to tour America, getting their instruments stolen, soon discovering dance music/culture and adopting it into their sound back home and getting away from the darkness of Joy Division

• their bittersweet success moments in the music industry interlaced with the private melodrama in their own personal lives (drugs, alchohol, divorces)

fuckin shite idea, total pish.control was pretty good but thats about it. i hate when people make films of people i admire, they are almost always shite, and why on earth do you want to see a film of it, we all know the story, do we really need to see it on the big screen?CRAP IDEA, OK?

Right, we might know the story, but I would still find it cool to see it on film. The same as knowing the story of JD, and how "Control" and "Joy Division" was good to see.

A lot of people also don't know the bands or their music, and I think these films are great for exposing people to their story and music.

We could also see triumphs such as them performing Blue Monday and the crowd going whild, same with True Faith, ect.

I'd love to have a section of the film dealing with the 40 date American tour in 1989 with Public Image Ltd. There could be a few really funny scenes with New Order and John Lydon....

I suppose the film could go on until 2005.

I'd love have the fellow who played Barney in Control play him again, I thought he captured Barney perfectly.

JD is a different story - it's all about the "legend" that attracts people to direct and to go to see the movie in cinemas.

It's like, remember all those movies about Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.? Did you know notice they hardly track their career - they show how it all began, a few most (in)famous momentums (usually early on in the carreer) and that's it. JD's career was so short it was perfect for a movie, or that of The Doors for that matter. To make a movie about the 20-year old career of a rock band that isn't really "weird", "crazy", "legendary" or whatever in the public mindset is tough, mind you.

I was actually thinking "Walk the Line" was done fairly well, given the long career and life of Johnny Cash. I mean, sure JD's compact career made it much easier.. and the death of Ian Curtis certainly lends it a bit of a mythology and instantly made the band legendary.. but I personally think that much the same can be done with New Order's career... which like Cash's, was long (not as long, but still very long considering: 1980-2006??) And in between those years, lots of key interesting bits can be interesting for a film. Much like how certain parts of Cash's life was interesting for that film. I'm sure people will beg to differ on the results of that film, but I thought it worked. At the least, it did what it did.. tell the story of the subject and expose others to their life and work, if even for the interesting bits.

Those would make for some cool scenes.. a little humor from their tours would give it that "24hr party people" vibe a bit too and no doubt would yield some classic scenes, for sure.

I think at the end of Control, the scene where the future band of New Order was framed was interesting to me. Maybe they could use all those same actors? I thought they were all very similar to the band. Hell, they even played their own instruments and that's dedication to their craft! For New Order, they'd probably be pressing more buttons though, heh.

I finally watched Control for the 1st time last night, and what totally surprised me was the performances of 'Barney' and 'Hooky' - they were fucking great - just like the real thing. I guess Hooky didn't look exactly like the real thing, but intonation and mannerisms were spot on, and it did make me think 'go on Anton, tell the next chapter', but in a lurid, dark, colour Super 8 style', because the next chapter IS about Barney and Hooky and the way New Order changed pop music and influenced modern dance music.

Is that not a story worth telling?

And with those two actors, I'd be happy.

so the film would have to create funny scenes that may or may not have happened in order to make for a good film

Nah, that's not what we're saying.. we're saying the story of New Order is good enough.

Your thoughts on what would make a good movie sounds like it could've been on the storyboards for a New Order video though.

You've got some good ideas with the treatment of the film that I like. I think the movie would have to be about all the members though. As interesting as it would be to focus on Hooky and Bernard, it'd be a disservice to the "Other Two". Although, a film can delve more into the 2 characters you mentioned more. Heh.. maybe a spinoff movie about the "Other Two" to make the entire New Order story from JD on a trilogy perhaps. I kid...
