it is a shame someone felt the need to release this. i agree--don't waste your money or your ears on this.
The material is interesting enough, it just shouldn't have fallen into the hands of bootlegging tossers.
what's the fucking point of it? In one respect, I think whomever's got control of the JD catalogue needs a smack round the chops, with a new "Best Of" coming out seemingly every week and a pointless compilation salvaged from a rehearsals C60 found in a bin in Manchester every year.I woudn't mind so much if these releases were any good, but mostly they remained unreleased for 30 years for a damn good reason.
What would be the decent thing would be to impound every copy of these exploitative, graverobbing releases, selling them officially through official channels at knockdown prices, and donating the profits to a charity. Then JD could release a compilation of their studio sessions to create something worth listening to more than once, instead of just a bunch of crap we may buy, listen to twice, then file away as worthless. Still, the record company doesn't care at that point, as they've got the money anyway and trainspotters have a luxurious 180gram vinyl double LP : peopel who care about owning a record that is rare because it is 'rare' instead of owning a record becaue it moves their souls are the mere accountants of artistry and have no soul to move. Wankers, they are, exploiting the dead.
Still, at least we haven't seen the "Ian Curtis School Years Doodles" glossy book and officially licensed Ian Curtis Converse Trainers decorated with a reproduction of his autograph and authentic reproduction noose.
Won't be long before they'll find Ian's desk at the job centre and frame it and sell it to some rich tosser with more money than sense.
