I check the cure's official sight from time to time, I notice on robert's page where he is listing his favorite movies, books, show, etc, in his favorite band list, he had joy division listed, but new order. Is there really a rivalry between the two bands? I can't understand how he could have depeche mode as one of his favorites but now new order.
There's rivalry allright - I think it's actually been created by the two bassists in both respective bands... Hooky has gone on record as saying he's a bit peeved that Simon Gallup (long time Cure bassplayer) ripped off not just his bass sound but his moves as well - and I think Gallup feels more or less the same way towards Hooky. The Cure and New Order have always been pretty much compared and contrasted to death over the years...and I don't think this is an issue that is likely ever to be resolved.....Unless Fatboy Smith pops it, that is...

Oh don't worry, Robert Smith's a New Order fan allright! I once put online here an audio clip of him telling his opinion about bootlegs and he said that he once bought a New Order bootleg, "which was absolutely fantastic" (or something like that), and he said that, to him, the way the songs are played on this record are exactly the way they should be played.
I think I still have that clip somewhere -- e-mail me if you want it! It's interesting to hear!

I may be mistaking, but I think that I read or heard in a Robert Smith interview that The Cure use to open up for Joy division in the early days. Is that true?
