Happy Mondays man teams up with Babyshambles

Kav, the guitarist for Happy Mondays' recent incarnation, has collaborated with Babyshambles' Adam Ficek and New Order and Joy Division bassist Peter Hook on his debut album.

The record is currently being recorded in east London, with other guests including The Infadels and Datarock.

On the collaborations on his album, Kav said: "It's amazing to work with the Infadels guys because they're one of the most musically talented British bands around, and also The Thirst, who are signed to Ronnie Wood's label, Wooden Records.

"Peter Hook, Datarock, and Adam from Babyshambles are also going to be laying down tracks - as are some other special guests. The album is going to be a mix of dirty rock 'n' roll and electric blues."

To celebrate the release of his new EP, 'The Blaggers And Liars EP', Kav is performing at The Macbeth in east London with The Cavaliers on April 4.

He's the lad behind the Get Loaded banner. Joined the Mondays a few years back and then left last year to go solo.

Other than that, I know not.

Whatever happened to solo artists actually making real solo albums, as opposed to having a bunch of "guests" on them?

What do you consider a 'real' solo album?

Most often a solo album has session musicians. Yes, some do not use session musicians, but they are rare and made by musical geniuses who can play every instrument.

Why NOT upgrade from session musicians to fellow established artists???

I think a proper solo album is where the solo artist in question writes all or most of the song on thier own, by themselves, and at least plays an instrument or two.....but generally has complete creative control over the final melody and sound of the songs.

Even though he releases his albums under the Nine Inch Nails moniker, Trent Reznor is a good example of what I think a true solo artist is.

of course, people like David Bowie will use a whole band int he studio, but Bowie generally writes all of the songs beforehand and knows what he wants out of the musicians.

Or Neil Young. He uses a band in the studio but they are most definately still HIS songs.

Solo albums these days seem to consists of the solo artist singing over melodies and songs and instruments written and performed not by them but by all of thier guest producers. Gwen Stefani's two solo albums are I feel a good example of this.

I am a self trained musician with no money...but I recorded a self released solo album where I wrote and arranged all of the music and played all of the instruments except for lead guitar (which my best friend played) and my album was pretty well recieved here where I lived.

So I figure that if I can do it, some fellow with more money and experiance than me should be able to do it as well.

Thats just my opinion though. I am by no means the authority on this subject.
