The Charlatans - The Misbegotten. NME Review

During a mid-'90s New Order split, Hooky formed Monaco with a Bernard Sumner impersonator called David Potts. Amusingly, he quit because the band sounded "too much like New Order" - and you wouldn't be surprised if Tim Burgess' bandmates wanted to finally jack it all in upon hearing his similarily embarrassing Sumner-pastiche on this awkwardly dated retread of NO's '93 classic 'Regret'. The fact that the Horrors remix on the flip actually improves matters says it all: when the dead can enhance one of your tunes, it's probably time to call it a day.

I find it interesting that a few bands are now letting their NO influences appear unselfconsciously into their music.

But that's another point of view I suppose.

So that's Sunrise, Waiting For The Sirens' Call and Regret clones that they've supposedly released from their album. I can't help but wonder if it's just journalists looking for credibility points and trying to appear achingly cool by knowing bits of New Order's back catalogue. But not really being into New Order. Carry on Charlies, it's a good new single, obviously New Order influenced but sounding bloody good for it. Better than The Wombats anyway.

NO also get a mention elsewhere in this edition of NME in the review of the new Portishead album

Stumbled upon them doing The Misbegotten on Later last night.It sounds nothing like Regret and Tim's haircut was a disgrace

Tim wears his influences on his sleeve on You Cross My Path. New Order, always Tim’s favourite band, are a big one, as are Brian Eno and David Bowie.

“New Order made me think being in a band was achievable. Power, Corruption And Lies is my favourite record of all time.

i quite like new the charlatans single, there's no reason to slag them off. at least they remind people how brilliant new order were.. some people call it ripping off. i call it anachronism. they are not the wombats, lets not forget that they wrote "10th &11th", "wonderland", "up at the lake" and dozens of amazing singles and b sides.

And there are plenty of reasons to slag off The Charlatans. Their lead singer for one. I mean, what the fuck ever happenned to his solo career for a start?

And album after album of dross, with a good song here and there. The 2004 album, i forget the title, fucking terrible. And, everytime I've seen them, bar one, they've been about as interesting as the weeds i dug up on my allotment today.

What song are you talking about? What's the title?

Downloaded the new Charlatans LP from XFM - it is really good, much poppier and immediate than any other album of theirs. Top stuff. They sure have ripped off Sirens with "Oh Vanity", but I see it as a tribute more than petty thievery.

The Misbegotten sounds nothin like Regret, anyway.

New Order and The Charlatans, what a great double bill show that would be ... make it happen fellers!

Don't know about this one sounding like Regret - It has a NO-ish sound, but i'm not sure which track.

I started singing Blue Monday along with The Misbegotten, straight away. Must be the chords. Or just listening to NO too much, you start hearing them everywhere.

Well, they're covering "Murder" for a new charity compilation... Available for 3 days only from 4th July...

Huge Charlatans fan...Other than NO they are probably my favourite band

I didnt like the new album at first cos it was too New Ordery but now im starting to appreciate how good it is...its like a tribute to NO but in a good way

rips new order off in places (the misbegotten - Blue Monday, Cross my path - Sunrise) but lets not forget....if 99% of us on here wrote an album it would sound a lot like NO

Don't slag Tim Burgess for 'ripping off' NO, embrace the guy
