none of these bands sound like Joy Division (even NO post 81). Not really even close.

I'm so tired of hearing this said about Editors/Interpol/whatever. They sound like themselves and not even each other, music does actually move on from JD believe it or not.

Also, despite what Hooky says, U2 at any stage in their career never even reminded me of JD, they too sound unique and like, well, U2.

I mean what is it? Band with male front man with reasonably strong voice, lots of guitars and you think it's Joy Division? They were so much more than that. Believe it or not I can even remember Blancmange being compared to JD at one point in the 80s, probably entirely because Neil Arthur had a strong voice!

I don't know...the first time I heard Interpol I'd never heard anything about them and the first thought that went through my mind is: 'wow, they sound just like Joy Division but with modern production'.

Early U2 sounds A LOT like Joy Division. Not vocally, but musically. The militant drumming, the scratchy-yet-melodic rhythm guitar.

11 oclock tick tock was a nice hannett production, as in martin hannett who produced the JD albums for our colonial friends...

I think what hooky said at one stage, and this is on youtube, that U2 have continued on from where JD had left off, not that they were musically the same or similar to JD.

With Interpol it's all about the drums for me - very similar drumming style to Steve Morris. Guitars sound nothing like, nor do vocals. Can't see this JD comparison with Editors at all.

must confess that first time i saw them (on the day the first album came out) i was pissed & shouted out jd song titles throughout the set. he asked me if i was just shouting random song titles, to which i replied "well no, clearly"

no idea why did it other than it was the ciders talking, always enjoy their sets.

Drummer from 65 Days of Static. Is excellent. Strangely, don't sound much as they do on their space.

Agreed, tiresome to keep hearing these comparisons to JD.

They're all shite at it Editors are the most blatant rip-off whilst trying to peddle it off as something new.OI! EDITORS! NO!!

Interpol are more Chameleons-Psychedelic Furs-y to me,& fookin' good too :)

The albums bit I mean,not standards...that's true! We'll see in 30years time as to how the Editors albums are regarded as opposed to the J.D. ones are now eh?

I think the new Editors stuff is a fair approximation of what Joy Division would sound like had Ian not got so lazy

Editors do have similarities although sometimes people take them too far. As far as The Back Room goes there are at least a few very obvious Joy Division comparisons... deep Curtis-esque voice, jagged guitar lines and - as Tim said - that fast and sparse drumming style. Even the black and white artwork for that album puts you in mind of Unknown Pleasures although not sure if that's a valid comparison.

I don't think the second Editors album sounds much like Joy Division as they're clearly now veering towards that bombastic "songs designed for stadiums" sound which ironically is U2's area.

Listen again to the drumming at the start of that 'hospital doors' song - its almost a direct rip off of the start of Love Will Tear Us Part.

Yes better throughtout. Apart from the guitar, drums, bass and lyrics.
