JD Fan -or- NO Fan

Definitely New Order. I like to listen to JD every now and then but the musical sound doesn't vary enough for me. That's my favorite part of NO. Plue i think the lyrics are much better in most of NO's songs. Most, not all...

New Order for me. I was into them for a good few years before I got into Joy Division and i have to admit I really didn't like Ian's voice to begin with . . .

I didn't either. In fact I found JD's Substance to be so dark and so punk that I could barely listen to it for the first couple of years that I had it. Couldn't believe it was the band that made NO Substance masterpiece!

I'm a NO fan, JD was too depressing to me at the time.

i'm a navel-gazer. JD for me, please, with a nice cup of cold misery.

Another tough poll, but NO mean alot more to me, they have been in my life since i was 12 yrs old and made my life better which is whay they are the greatest band ever. Got into JD through NO as i'm only 35 (only eh still sounds old) i was too young for JD. however stil love JD music. Unknown pleasures, and closer are two of the g8est albums ever but NO still wins this poll as they would against ANY other band in the history of the world

New Order by a country mile. For me anyways.

I got into New Order first, when I was 14, thru the Best of New Order comp (which had just come out).

I thought thier music was fantastic, and amazing, and beautiful. It was gorgeous.

I was a huge New Order fan for about three years before I really listened to Joy Division. This was around 1995-1998. Interestingly, back then I had no idea what the members of New Order looked like, nor who did what. There really wasn't a whole lot of info on them at the time here in Columbus, Ohio.

I remember buying live at Glastonbury 1987 on cassette tape for one dollar...and being surprised at how ROUGH New Order sounded live! It took me a bit to appreciate how they sounded live.

Finally, around 2000 I saw the Perfect Kiss video, and then finally found out what New Order looked like. I was surprised at how...normal looking and non rock star they looked. And I loved Barney's haircut.

It was in 2000 that I finally started to listen to Joy Division.

Its odd......in the late 90's, no one ever talked about JD, it was always NO its funny how the focus has switched.

I think New Order are superior to JD in about every way.

Yes....Ian had an amazing voice and wrote amazing lyrics...

But musically, I find most JD songs to be dull. Most DJ songs are long, repetetive, plodding, and lacking in melody.

Yes, there are great songs, such as Transmission, Decades, The Eternal, New Dawn Fades, Heart and Soul, Isolation, Digital, and others.....but to me most JD songs are just boring.

Of course..they were also young.

Where JD has about 12 great songs (in my humble opinion)

New Order has about 30 or more great songs.

And I love Barney's voice. There is something about Bernard's voice that is very plaintive, expressive, and beautiful. He really does have soul. And even when Barney sounds bad live, he is still singing from ther heart.

Plus, I actually love Bernards lyrics. Some of them are superb (BM, TPK, Temptation, BLT, True Faith, Vanishing Point, Special, WFTSC) but even when his lyrics are "bad", they have a quality unique to Bernard.

For the of the idolation that Ian Curtis gets, I actually think that Bernard Sumner is a far more fascinating person.

Plus, New Order innovated musically more than JD ever did. Hooky, Steven, Gillan, and Barney did some things in New Order that changed the face of music.

So, though I love JD, New Order for me.

For me: Joy Division AND New Order. New Order AND Joy Division. As the same band.

New Order, slightly. However, I do find that Barneys lyrics at times have really detracted from the instrumentals, and if anything this has got worse over time. Many of the songs would have been better as instrumentals, such as Thieves Like Us for example.

I didnt choose JD because it was really Hannett that was behind the distant, icy effects. Barney and Hooky always wanted it to sound more like a regular rock band and this comes across on the live sessions of the Heart and Soul CD; the songs dont have the same impact at all.

Plus of course Hooky's bass packs a lot more punch after 82ish
