Having given up hope of ever owning a shergold, I was just about to take the plunge and buy a yamaha trb 1006, only to find out they have been discontinued and nowhere in england has them.
Anyone got any ideas of a readily available six string bass under a grand?

Finding a 6-string bass under $1000 is pretty tough (mind you, I'm talking about the 6-string bass like the Shergold, not those huge-neck monstrosities that progressive and metal rockers, and jazz musicians seem to favor). Probably the closest thing, at least in sound, would be this Fender Baritone guitar: LINK, but this is more guitar than a bass.
The other possibility is finding a Fender Bass VI, or the reissue that Fender's custom shop recently did. The Fender Bass VI is used by the Cure and Cocteau Twins (probably to mimic the sound that Hooky was getting with his Shergold). I have a Bass VI. An older one would likely be more expensive than the reissue, but the reissue costs $6,000.
You'll probably have to buy a 1 up 1 down style one and then re-string it (that Yam you were after is like that?). There was some dodgy Italian make on Ebay a while ago for not much cash at all. Probably horrible, but still it's a 6 string for a pittance.
I doubt you'll find a Shergold OR a "giant strat" anywhere for reasonable cash.

Thanks for the info Eric, but I think I've already ruled out fender, I just don't like them.
I know I'll have to go down the re stringing route, and that nothing these days has a neck as nice as the shergold, but I've given up any hope of finding one.
I'm struggling with my impatience, ibanez have the SR506 which looks OK, but I know I should wait to see what Yamaha come out with, if anything.
I'm waffling on a bit due to being pissed off with the whole bloody 6 string situation, thick necks, wrong tuning etc, why can't someone make a decent shergold replica?

If it's a baritone guitar you're after, check out Danelectro. I'm seriously thinking about getting one of their re-issues. They look the biz, quite different styling and you could get three for your grand.
They do basses as well, but they don't look a bit right.
Shergold actually refer to their 6's as Baritone guitars, but they're certainly not tuned B-B like those Danelectro jobs.

they don't look the biz they look like a lump of biz on a stick, that's a seriously ugly guitar, I had to stare at a 500 watt bulb for 10 minutes to erase the image from my eyes, the light hurt less!

James' ebay link above shows a list of the kinds of 5 or 6- string basses that don't provide the sound that the original poster is probably seeking.

The last poster is correct - the New Order/Hooky sound is really a baritone guitar sound, and not really a true bottom-heavy thumping bass sound.
Also, note that baritone guitars can sound pretty good through a guitar amp as well as a bass amp. A regular bass, whether 4, 5 or 6 strings will have almost no presence if plugged into a guitar amp.
Thing is.... What Shergold call a Baritone guitar is essentially the same as a Fender Six, a bass with two extra, higher strings giving an instrument tuned one octave below a guitar. What that Danelectro site call a Baritone guitar, is essentially a modified guitar tuned only a perfect 4th below a normal one (B-B rather than E-E).
To make matters worse, most modern "six string basses" run B-B...an octave below what Danelectro call a baritone. I've even heard tell of some running G-G....but find it hard to accept that there is a speaker out there that could cope with a low G......never mind the guage such a string would need to be.
