5 live shows or "Hooky can you hear me?" (to the tune of Tommy)

Well since the hopes of bonus material on the bonus discs of the reissues seem to have been dashed, those of us who already have all the studio stuff being reissued, repackaged, repackaged (without even a tacky badge, apparently) can maybe only hang their hats on the (rumored) companion live shows offered through the ( equally rumored) new order website. So I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on what shows I'd suggest for a companion live disc for each album. I'm gonna list 2 for each; one being a a show I consider both a fine performance and a fine live companion to the corresponding studio album (based on a bootleg which I have no way of knowing that there's a copy of releaseable quality available but I'll save the band the trouble of listening to hundreds of shows by suggesting these), and the other a show that meets those 2 criteria but falls somewhat short IMO in the performance category but is a known quality soundboard which the band could easily release (which it looks like they're going for the easy way these days). Also, as a whole with the 5 in the former category I've tried to acheive a comprehensive live archive of their catalog with many songs featured and not too much repitition. So here goes:

Movement: Pasadena '81 (nice setlist. best pre-Temptation out there). SBD-Stockholm '81 (tight and angry with an extended EGG ending).

PC&L: Detroit '83 (early Lonesome tonight, Both '83 Blue Mondays, thunderous Confusion encore) SBD: Barcelona '84 (hits-laden clean set. Skullcrusher. No Movement repeats, but (alas) no Low-Life early versions either).

Low-life: Sunderland '84 (all 4 early Low-life tracks, nice performance) SBD: Rotterdam '85 (again a tight set with 5 Low-life tracks, 2 early brotherhood tracks and Let's Go from a particularly good stretch of late-'85 live shows).

Brotherhood: NYC '87 (1st night) This is just a flat out fun show (OK I was there, but it still holds up on tape). SBD: Royal Albert Hall '86-good setlist, energetic show.

Technique: (not that it matters that much for the setlists) San Diego '89: OK, again it's cause I was there and had fun (and you get Every Little Counts). SBD: Birmingham '89 It's got 7 of the 8 songs they played from Technique on that tour, and the 1 omission is the worst 1 (live at least), love less. Plus you get TBTHOG, True Faith and 1963.

So there's the shows, and they could even make more $$ by throwig inthe Irvine Meadows Substance show as a bonus if you bought all 5.

Anyway, just a thought.

Nice idea & well thought out,the shows & setlists are always going to fall foul of personal taste tho',but the ones you've chosen look pretty good to me,give or take. Just not gonna happen tho' is it

Sure, everybody's got their favorite songs, but wahat I'm saying is that it's really not that hard to come up with a somewhat complete retrospective. With my audience choices you get:

6 of 8 Movement songs--minus Truth (readily available on 316) and the rarely played Doubts Even Here.

6 of 7 PC&L songs (Ecstasy never played to my knowledge)--minus Leave me alone (Glasgow bonus disc)

5 of 8 Low-life--minus Elegia, Sub-culture, and This Time of Night (TTON on Glasgow bonus disc)

5 of 9 Brotherhood--Paradise, As it is..., Broken Promise, Way of Life (As it is.., again on the Glasgow disc)

6 of 8 Technique (Guilty partner not played 'til 1998)--Run and Love less missing (neither were that great live to be honest)

Additionally you get working versions of Temptation, 4 Low-life tracks and all the singles from that era that were performed except subculture an State of the Nation. And all the meaningful B-sides (Cries and Whispers & mesh just weren't performed so much). + Let's Go.

And the SBD Numbers are similar:

Movement 6 of 8 PC&L 5 of 7 Low-Life 6 of 8 Brotherhood 6 of 9 Technique 7 of 8

Plus early EGG, Skullcrusher, Let's Go and all the singles B-sides etc. With most of the missing tracks available on easy to find DVDs.

And you could probably tweak both sets of shows to fill the numbers in even more (maybe at the expense of performance, maybe not). Tim?

Anyway, what I'm saying is I spent about a half hour (now granted I'm intimately familiar with alot of these shows through 25 years of listening) coming up with a pretty comprehensive live anthology of the Factory years, so it seems like the band could maybe do the same.

I'll even help them if they'd like...

Like I said,it does look good & makes a lot of sense,tho' I always thought Run was great live,LoveLess was always a let down,mainly because I really love the track I think. Other than that,pretty much spot on to me

And, I know I come off sounding like some obsessed fanboy, but really the only reason I threw it out there is because somebody from the band (Hook) mentioned it in the interview at the top of the page. Trust me, I'm not the type to organize some grassroots campaign, but if someone from the band wants to throw an idea out there, I'll keep the momentum going and in the meantime let them know there's still people that care.

But with PL football starting up tomorrow over there and NCAA football over here Aug. 30th., you can rest assured I won't be boring you or anyone else with statistical analyses of hypothetical New Order live anthologies.

I'll be too busy with my fantasy teams--and more of the aforementioned going out that my wife loves so-- for that sort of geeky activity :D

I second the notion for that barcelona show, it is amazing.

Barcelona 84? Amazing setlist and sound quality, but the actual playing is shoddy at best - almost every song contains errors, no way will it pass quality control.

Perhaps, but maybe that performance of The Village would be fit?

Well if you are happy to have just the one song, then so be it. I would hope for rather more from a gig! Given that there are 20 better performances from 1984 alone, all of which have the same sound quality.....

You see, i'm relatively new to early 80's bootlegs from New Order, so I didn't know. Though, what i've received has mostly been audience boots, so I havent heard and "clean" soundboards in a while.
