Strange facts (and not so facts) about New Order

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

I came up with a list of eccentricities about the band that separates them from the other "indie" bands of the time, and just some things about the band which I found interesting.....

-New Order obviously has a huge gay following, yet unlike fellow 80s alternative bands like Depeche Mode, Husker Du, REM, The Smiths (Morrissey is probably gay), and The Dead Milkmen, all of the members of New Order are heterosexual, for all we know.....

-New Order went on to commercial success which surpassed Joy Division ten fold, yet these days it seems like all the hipsters, critics, and depressed goth kids care about is Joy Division....a band that put out 2 studio albums to New Order's 8.

-New Order is known primarily as a synth-electronic driven band, but when they were still Joy Division and the record company added synthesizers to their first album, the band threw a complete shit fit! 5 Years later we get The Perfect Kiss!

-Did New Order ever work with a Producer???????? I know Hannett did Movement and Stephen "What's a bass" Hague did Republic, but other than that, didn't the band self produce all their other records, including most of their singles? If so, I wonder who had the biggest role in the production process......I'm sure Mr. Sumner.

-New Order will never be able to escape Joy Division's ghost. No matter how successful they were, as someone posted here earlier they do not have a large devoted following like Depeche Mode (just look at the sales of the last album), and it's unfortunate because New Order pioneered "ALTERNATIVE DANCE"- What band was mixing disco grooves with indie post punk sensibility besides NO in 1982?, yet New Order will never reach the status of JD...After all, there's no Peter Hook biopic made, is there?

For a band that has been so groundbreaking, commercially successful, and innovative, it is really a shame to realize that their legacy will never be as great as their previous incarnation, although i'd take a New Order album over a Joy Division record any day of the week. Ian's story touched people so much that in retrospect, it still overshadows everything this amazing group acheived on its own.....sad really.

Hmmm.. much of the above is a load of old tosh. Natch.

Word to yer mother.

yo. All the mamas in the house say 'mofo'.

Who the hell are the Dead Milkmen?

And I was hoping it would be full of strange facts such as:

'Stephen Morris got expelled from school for 'over-indulging' in cough mixture'.

But if it wasn't for Joy Division you would not have New Order!

You have to remember Joy Division only lasted 3 years and in that time recorded 2 perfect albums and 3 perfect singles.

It is scary to think how good Joy Division could have been, considering Ian Curtis was only 23 when he died.

And finally - who are the dead milkmen????

Actually Liam YOU are a total fucking failure.....

But thanks for your useless post anyway

The Dead Milkmen were a satirical punk band from Philadelphia, PA that were around from approx 1983 to 1995. I don't know how well they are known across the world, they're not even terribly well known in the US, but are punk rock icons and helped shape the style of silly 90s alternative bands. I suggest picking up the albums "Bucky Fellini" and "Beezebubba" if you get the chance. Great stuff

As far as I know, none of the members of Depeche Mode are gay either, or so they say.

-New Order went on to commercial success which surpassed Joy Division ten fold, yet these days it seems like all the hipsters, critics, and depressed goth kids care about is Joy Division....a band that put out 2 studio albums to New Order's 8.

People look down on synthesizers nowadays.

-New Order is known primarily as a synth-electronic driven band, but when they were still Joy Division and the record company added synthesizers to their first album, the band threw a complete shit fit! 5 Years later we get The Perfect Kiss!

People learn and change.

Sumner.

I think they have. Isn't Stephen Hague a producer? The band also worked with other producers on their last album if I'm not mistaken. One's thing for sure, except for True Faith and Regret, the songs they produced themselves were much better than the ones they collaborated with others.

Depeche Mode have many female fans who gush over them like teeny boppers gushing over boybands. Is that what you want? I think Depeche Mode still doesn't get much respect in their country.

Well at least they get royalties either way so I think they're fine with it.

 (in an ironic way obviously).

As for my talents, well, I do have to say this, If you think that you've got some kind of rapping talent, then i daresay i have as well!

As for the bull and the parasites, a number of points:

1- What makes you so sure? 2- What makes you think i'm actually going to ever get into a situation where a bull will kill me? 3- And considering its well known that I want to be cremated, in what way are parasites going to eat my body? The chances are that if i did get killed by a bull, my dead corpse would be taken away by the authorities to determine a precise cause of death, then i'd be prepared for a flight back to England, handed over to the local funeral director and have my body prepared for cremation. 4- I'd be DEAD. In what way am I supposed to care even if my body is ate by parasites.

So yet again NO BUYS

And are "not so facts" like "Just So Stories", but not so???

The REAL Strange Facts about New Order:

  1. Steve not only owns a tank, but a contingent of Soviet-era medium range ICBMs (purchased w/ money from London buyout in '93). He is currently in a "Cold War" type stand-off with Macclesfield.

  2. The rumor of Hooky's Vault are true. But that punk bastard Indiana Jones and Nic Cage from "National Treasure" raided it. The contents are in an unmarked wooden crate somewhere in D.C. where top men are examining it.

  3. Barney once concocted a drink called "Armaggedon". One glass and he recorded vocals for Brotherhood, stole and destroyed a London taxi and engaged in a five hour long phone conversation with Michael Jackson...without him even remembering it afterwards!

  4. Gillian...curses like a sailor, spits like one too! Just follow her after a gig where the synth/sequencer fuck up!

  5. Tony Wilson, among other things, was not in fact a cunt. He did however have a brilliant soprano singing voice and many times put on dressing room exhibitions where an enthralled and intoxicated Barney cried and hugged him afterwards for a stiring rendition of Bette Midler's "The Wind Beneath My Wings" with an extended aria.

  6. Rob did it all for the nookie.
