I have Retro and it's a wonderful piece of music. Great instrumental. Sounds 87-88ish. I just don't know what the hell that Best of Marsh thing is....can someone help?

Best and Marsh was the theme tune to a football show featuring Geage Best and Rodney Marsh. I think !!

Best & Marsh was a football programme on Granada TV, hosted by Tony Wilson. It used to appear on a Sunday night about 11pm in the late 80s.

By the way, it's not Best OF Marsh, but Best & Marsh... And it's the b/side of Round & Round... © 1989

George Best is without doubt the greatest football player the world has ever seen - bar Pele. He is a Manchester United legend, and helped them win the European Cup in 1968.

Bestie was the first footballing superstar, and after destroying Benfica in a European Cup away game he was dubbed 'El Beatle' by the press.

He later played for Fulham with Rodney Marsh, a crowd puller of lesser repute (who later played for Tampa Bay Rowdies), where, along with England's 1966 World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore, they dazzled the crowd for a short time.

On one famous occasion, having thoroughly destroyed the opposition, Best went on to tackle Marsh for the ball. On another occasion, Marsh suddenly stopped dribbling and sat on the football to cheers from the crowd, and looks of astonishment from the opposition.

Sadly, Best was an alcoholic, and his career waned. But mot before playing for the San Jose Earthquakes in 1981, and scoring one of the best goals of all time:

Despite his battle with alcohol he dated a string a beautiful women, including a couple of Miss World's, most famously Mary Stavin.

Legend has it that following one romp in a hotel, a waiter walked in with room service for Bestie and his Miss World. Earlier that day, they had won a fortune at the casino and the bank notes littered the bed. The waiter, sad at the demise of Bestie's career, looked at Miss World and the money and asked him, "Mr. Best, where did it all go wrong?"

Even as the alcoholism took a deadly hold on his body, Bestie was still able to pull the ladies and in 1995 married his second wife, Alex:

In 2005, Bestie died at the age of 59.

Tony Wilson was a massive ManU fan, so Best & Marsh was a match made in heaven for him; professionally as a journalist, musically with the help of Steve and Gillian who wrote the theme tune, and as a footballing fan able to work with one of his idols.

Apologies for wittering on but Bestie is a legend of the highest order, and as an NO fan I am proud that they wrote a tune in his name.

And the show was outstanding. :rolling:

Just to clarify... was this song actually used as theme song on TV from the start, or is it just something New Order made up inspired by the show? Did people know of this New Order song before it was put on the B side of R&R, and when was it first heard?

Hey guys, it's called SOCCER! :deal:

No Holidaze,

It is really interesting, in fact, that we in the USA call it Soccer, and yet, in the rest of the world, they call it Football.

Imagine that, they call a game that you play mainly with your feet, with a ball, Football!

All these regional differences are so interesting.

Thanks for helping us see the cultural difference, No Holidaze....

It was written specifically for the show.

It was also the same time that they did the theme tune to the BBC's Making Out, which starred Keith Allen, the tune being Vanishing Point. In fact there is a thread here about it:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096645/board/nest/31710795

And does memory serve me right and didn't Steve and Gillian also write the theme tunes for Rapido and America's Most Wanted around this time? A prolific period for them if they did.

To be precise: "Association Football".

Over here, your version of rugby is called American Footbal.

Baseball is called rounders. It's played just by girls.

No thread that mentions George Best is complete without the immortal quote:

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

What a complete idiot!!!

Ok, then tell you beloved New Order that it is called soccer, not football, so that when they re-release World in Motion 2010 for the soccer world cup, they would change a lot of things with the song, particularly:

...we ain't no hooligans this ain't no SOCCER song!...

how stupid, indeed!

Have a root around youtube for Best's interview with Mrs Merton, if you've not seen it. It's funny.

Less funny was Best's habit of drunkenly beating his wife.

In fact, it's all very sad to remember how his talent shone for such a short time before being pissed up the wall.

the term soccer is derived from association football.

calling it soccer actually makes more sense to help distinguish it from other games such as rugby football.

the only similarity between american fotball & rugby i can see is that in both games you can use your hands or feet to propel the ball. other than that....

though given your "comedy" remark about baaseball i guess you are trying to be funny? as was proved this week the english invented baseball btw.

Hibster,

You're quite right I was taking the mick.

Baseball isn't the only game we invented. Table Tennis is another our inventions. Apparently Ping Pong's comming home for the 2012 Olympics.

Take a look at this, even the depressing moron Prime Ministwat Gordon Broon is laughing his cock off in the background (far right):

Best bits from 2 minutes 20 secs onwards.

swoon. At his Death there was a plaque made, to the effect. 'Maradona good. Pele excellent.

George Best.
Before drink took him. Excellent tune. Written not just as improv.

Everyone's got their own opinion about the greatest players around, and Pele and Maradona deserve their places at the absolute pinnacle of the game, but George Best was something else, an unbelieveable player. The word genius is often misused, but the boy Best was a genuine genius with a football. Pace, vision, two great feet, amazing balance, more skills than the likes of Zidane could ever hope to possess, and a phenomenal goalscoring record for a winger. You don't get players like George Best very often, and I am privileged to have seen him play and to have played with players he skinned on a regular basis. Never was a name more appropriate than his.

Fucking good tune too!

...And he was Irish, Northern Irish to be precise, which means he never got the opportunity to play in a World Cup.

Could you imagine his reputation if he'd been part of the England World Cup winning team of 1966?

Such were his skills as a 36-year-old drunk, that in 1982 Billy Bingham considered taking him to World Cup Finals in Spain as a member of the Northern Ireland World Cup Squad, and Ron Atkinson, Manchester United's then manager, was prepared to offer him a contract so he could get back into shape.

But it was too late by then.

The tragic genius of Bestie moulds itself well to the JD/NO story.

Rodney Marsh, in comparison was an underachieving ball juggler, who is these days best remembered for his Tsunami joke:

"Why didn't David Beckham sign for Newcastle United? Because he was appaled by all the damage the Toon Army (Tsunami, geddit?) were causing in Asia"

For our American cousins, the Toon Army is the group of misguided individuals who support Newcastle.

The joke had everything to do with Beckham's lack of intelligence than anything to do with the victims who died in the disaster. Nonetheless, Marsh got the sack from his pundit's job with Sky TV for telling that joke live on air.

I don't know what's worse; Marsh's crap joke, Tony Wilson swearing live on air a few years ago, or this:

Rod Marsh (and to a lesser degree Frank Worthington) were unlucky in that they were playboy footballers at the same time as the great man Besty, and neither was as good on or off the pitch. Rod Marsh was a quality player in his own right, and would have been a top star without Besty around to raise the stakes. Anyone remember Stan Bowles or Robin Friday?

Equally tragic figures, particularly Robin Friday, who nobbed about in the lower leagues for years, when he really should have been carving out a career in the top flight. Didn't Noel Gallagher's brother write a book about Robin Friday?

Stephen and Gillian did "Making Out", which featured some themes that then appeared on the "o2 and You" album, and some stuff that was on the "Making Out" mix of "Vanishing Point".

They also did "Reportage", which was an instrumental version of what became "World In Motion". The other stuff was reworked into instrumental tracks on "o2 and You" and "Super Highways" (normally under the same name as the series they were taken from).

I wish The Other Two had toured.
