New order- power corruption and lies (remaster)

well, its here at last...

for me, the pinnacle of their career, and their best album. nothing has quite come close to the level they were at when this album came out..

tracklisting:

1 Age of Consent 5:13 2 We All Stand 5:13 3 The Villiage 4:36 4 5 8 6 7:30 5 Your Silent Face 5:58 6 Ultraviolence 4:51 7 Ecstasy 4:25 8 Leave Me Alone 4:40

Power, Corruption & Lies – bonus disc

  1. Blue Monday 7:32
  2. The Beach 07:22
  3. Confusion 08:15
  4. Thieves Like Us 6:38
  5. Lonesome Tonight 5:13
  6. Murder 3:57
  7. Thieves Like Us (Instrumental) 6:59
  8. Confusion (Alt Version) 07:36

so lets talk about specifics:

  1. the album is not overly loud, or 'over mastered', i'm still comparing all the individual tracks... but so far they look really good

  2. the soft parts are clear, with no noise or artifacts that i've noticed..

i'm listening through altec-lansing speakers, and also through headphones

  1. the loud parts are not distorted

  2. tracks are complete and not missing parts

the bonus disc:

  1. Unfortunately , the bonus disc starts off badly with 'blue monday' still missing the intro beats

  2. the sound quality for 'blue monday' is very good however, i'll compare it with the 'substance' version, and also with the '24 hour party people version)

however, note that the mastering for the bonus tracks is on the 'loud' side, and it looks like there might be a little bit of overcropping..

  1. the rest of the tracks sound fine also, and are not overly loud, and do not have their levels maxed out...

  2. the last track on the disc is listed as 'confusion (alt version)', when in fact it is confusion (instrumental)....

==========================================================

overall, the main album is excellent, and definitely worth getting...

the bonus disc is average, but the sound quality is very good.. of course they could have put more tracks on there as it is about 60min+ in total

New Order have never sounded better !!!!!

This is a very good job, and after all these years, to finally get a great copy of it is very special to me.

a lot more to come.. especially the graphical sound comparisons..

How is the track seperation between "The Village" and "586"? The original CD masters had some overlay between the two, so when you skipped directly to "586", you could still hear a small piece of baseline from where "The Village" ends.

"Blue Monday" with the first beat missing is still a disappointment. For a song that's regarded as one of their most influential and groundbreaking moments of their career, you think that someone would have noticed this. It's pretty obvious when you listen to the structure of the song in the beginning. This is now the third official compilation to have had this error. They can't all be winners, I suppose.

yes, there is a note or two from 'the village' still there..

from my cd:

the village 4min:37.000sec 586 7min:31.266sec

the remasters:

the village 4min:36.266sec 586 7min:30.520sec

the top graph is the original cd, and the lower is the remaster...they are split at approximately the same point..

there's still a slim chance it might be fixed on the final version.... this is the promo.....

we'll have to wait and see..

I was wondering if Blue Monday still have the volume drop-outs, just like on the Substance 1987 discs and the later ones. I still don't have a version that is correct on both channels.

please tell me the timings at where the dropouts occur, and i will check...

i never noticed all these errors (beats missing, clicks, dropouts), until i just read them recently on this board..

i think someone mentioned there was a 'fixed' version on the 2cd international bonus disc.. but i don't have that..

At about 2:24 minutes 'I thought I was mistaken' ...

For instance: I used my Substance 1987 CD, my right channel drops out quite seriously for a while.

I've never noticed this with both my German (Rough Trade) or regular UK (Factory) releases, even though I've played them over and over. But I will check it later today!

Thanks for your efforts in providing the waveform analysis of the new discs -1 much appreciated.

What a shame if the bonus discs are compressed. It's almost as if London think that because the bonus discs contain mostly singles they need to sound loud (for playing at partys ?!). Can't understand this approach myself - surely the whole 2 disc package should use the same mastering approach. Also what a bummer about Blue Monday. :confused2:

Now I know that Blue Monday is missing the first beats I won't be buying the remasters.

you might be joking, but i don't see any smileys..

seriously, it has taken me 5 seconds in soundforge to fix it....

really, in fact, here, everyone listen to this..

its the first 38 seconds.. http://rapidshare.com/files/147139620/nobm-intro_fixed_.wav.html

and then discuss what you think..

What a shame if the bonus discs are compressed. :confused2:

here's a breakdown:

song time note

===============================================

  1. Blue Monday 7:32 slight compression
  2. The Beach 07:22 compressed
  3. Confusion 08:15 slight compression
  4. Thieves Like Us 6:38 compressed
  5. Lonesome Tonight 5:13 slight compression
  6. Murder 3:57 not compressed
  7. Thieves Like Us (Instrumental) 6:59 slight compression
  8. Confusion (Alt Version) 07:36 slight compression

so basically you have 2 tracks, 'the beach', and 'thieves like us', and actually they don't sound THAT bad.....

and for the tracks that are not compressed, or slightly compressed, that means that most of the song is at peak level, but it does not clip too much.. i'll post some more examples..

where did you get the CD? is it a US/UK/European version???? and is it the original pressing?

i will show what my versions of substance (US CD) is like, because i dont see a dropout at all anywhere in the song in either channel..

here is the portion of 'blue monday', with both channels.. i've highlighted the portion that you mentioned..

i'll post a little more information shortly..

here is a closeup of the section mentioned above..

i've moved it here, so its easier to see..

just the right channel..

i dont see or hear any dropout, and in the remaster its the same, no difference...

i've watched the levels (at the bottom of the soundforge screen, and they're consistent also)..

Is the "Alt Version" of Confusion the Rough Mix?

Or the Substance CD 2 Confused Beats or whatever.

nope, unfortunately it's the 'instrumental' mix that we already had from 'substance'...

i know, another mess up....

(for those of you that don't have it, you can get the 'rough mix' on the arthur baker 'breakin')

ok, here's the spectral analysis video for the 'substance' version of blue monday for the portion of 2min:15sec-2min:32sec..

note there isn't any discernible dropout in the levels..

here is the waveform/volume analysis.. same with the volume...

and you can download the full AVI, with the UNCOMPRESSED right audio channel here.

Don't expect too much, because you can here, that it's done from the vinyl, but luckily, I bought the cassette back in those days, when I was in New Zealand. :D

are you saying that a prerecorded cassette recording is better than copying a vinyl?

It appears that my Substance CD is a re-pressing from juli 1996 (it also could be the januari 2000 re-release because I sold my older copy from 1990 (Rough Trade) so I had to buy another Substance 1987 version), the catalogue number is: 3984 28227 2, done by Warner Manufacturing Europe. At the bottom of the backside it says:

Previously available as 520 008-2 www.londonrecords.co.uk

So, unfortunately ... no original (Factory) pressing, but the problem also appears on my copy of International (London records 0927492262) and even Retro (London records 0927 49499 2) my version of this "thing" has an extra outside sleeve which you can put the 4-CD box-set in).

i will also try to find the 'international' version..

Well if the original cd is is a good as you say it is, it definately is worth picking up. PC&L always disappointed me simply because of the crappy recording. Would be nice to hear it clear. Its the shame of the nation that they couldn't put on a decent bonus disc.

No, I didn't say that, but you'll never find any scratches on a cassette, that's what it's all about for me. And a remastered version of 'Confused Beats' never was released on a CD, if I'm not completely wrong.

No reference of a vinyl, but when you listen to the mentioned CD, you'll hear the vinyl source, which was used obviously.

it might be possible that the re-release had an error..

i've checked the US international, and US retro disc, and still can't find a drop out on 'blue monday'....

so i'm not sure where the issue is coming from..

But I also long for a remastered version of The Village, Your Silent Face & Leave Me Alone. my disc sound as flat as a ... eeerrrhhh ... True Faith-leaf.
