Moderators - ban that 'fanny' avatar picture

You guys are making a big deal about nothing. This site and these forums are dedicated to NOOL, but do we really need to make sure that we set the proper etiquette standards for avatars on this page??? I mean cmon, this is Censorship at its most petty. Who in their right mind who goes on this board would honestly be offended by a picture of a vagina??? This isn't the Fundamentalist Christian Message Board, it's the New Order Message Board. I would imagine that nobody under 18 goes on this site, so what's the damn problem?? I mean there are people here who have a racist southern flag as their avatar, and that's ok, but a picture of the female anatomy isn't????? Cmon guys chill the hell out.

I'm not prudish by any means, and I'm sure most of us on these boards aren't offended by nudity per se. But, this is a New Order-related site, and like Chris mentioned, not a porn site. Most of the music-related message boards I go on to, would probably have a member banned or at least warned or something if they had a pornographic (or seemingly pornographic) avatar. I'm not calling certain body parts pornographic in itself---just most of us think it's inappropriate to have such a picture (PS- I've never seen the avatar in question...but still...) as an avatar here. And I'm sure most (maybe all?) of the moderators would agree. It's not a question of being prudish, though---just whether it's appropriate for these boards or not. And it seems that many of us agree that it's not appropriate for these boards.

Yeah, I saw it. I was sat at work on a bank of desks that contains 2 middle aged women with the bosses desks to the rear. I nearly fucking choked on my cup-a-soup. Entirely unexpected and quite unwelcome. But when you take a step back it was a lighter, gentler time back then. We'll never get those days back.

I'm no prude and am certainly not offended by porn, but there's a time and a place. I certainly don't want to be faced with it when I'm at work, with family or in a queasy mood.

I'd come in from a club absolutely off my tits when I first saw it. It was one of those moments when you can't quite make sense of anything. Because I was confused about the picture I got confused about loads of other things. I spent ages trying to turn the mirror above the fireplace on then gave up and got into the spare bed. I opened my eyes the next morning and the first thought in my mind, before 'what the hell am I doing in the spare bed' was 'what was that fanny doing on Neworderonline?'

Vulgarity and Sexual Explicitness…As a community with a diverse variety of members and readers, we ask that our members post without using vulgarity. Vulgarity not only includes vulgar language and pictures but also sexist, racist, anti-religious and homophobic language which may offend other members. In addition, the "masking" of vulgarity by inserting * or another keystroke in place of one or more letters in a vulgar term is unacceptable in most cases. We realize that there's a "grey area" of judgement with vulgarity but we ask that you'll respect others by avoiding vulgarity.

Everything you've posted in this thread is incorrect:

1. The site and forums aren't dedicated to 'NOOL' they're dedicated to New Order.
2. There are guidelines for avatars and they say that they shouldn't be 'adult' in nature. We do need to maintain standards - we're not here to make the band look bad.
3. We DO have members that are under 18.
4. The 'Southern Flag' or flag of the Confederacy, may have racist connotations to some, but is not inherently so - it's usually the way someone's mind works...

If 'adult' images are posted here, then the site becomes 'Not safe for work' which is NOT something we want. Some people here cite this website as examples of their work in different forms. Those people wouldn't want prospective employers assuming that 'adult' material was condoned by candidates.

They're the TOS when someone signs up. If you can't abide by them, stay away.

Good post, Chris. I agree with you.

Moderators need more power here. That way they can get rid of all the spam (mobile phones sales etc) that appear across the forums. What exactly can mods do here? ( this isn't a dig just a question, I just thought they might have more control)

Seems like the pragmatic approach, rather than all this talk of people being fired from their jobs and children's minds being corrupted which, it has to be said, has achieved nothing but preventing the event from being forgotten by everyone.

That is YOUR interpretation - obviously Bernard Sumner does not see it that way. However a rather offensive 'fanny' does not have different interpretations. I am no prude but us Brits do have some levels of decorum

Not exactly the kind of thing you want popping up unannounced on your PC with wife and kids around or at work. It has seriously affected the frequency that I come on here as I don't want that hassle.

I'd be amazed if someone thought it even remotely amusing.
