What NO related material can we expect in 2009?

Well the end of a very dark year. Will 2009 bring joy in some form of a Bad Lieutenant release or a gig from Freebase? Or maybe even a New Order release?

Or maybe FUCK ALL!

ALSO NEW ALBUMS FROM

  • DEPECHE MODE

SO IT SHOULD BE GOOD LET'S SEE

It would actually be very easy to do a parody of a NO song so their demise is not entirely doom and gloom. Especially as the output for the second half of their career has been dire.

How hard can it be to play bass over some gay disco?

Can't wait to hear the new Pet Shop Boys album. Depeche Mode has been pretty uneven lately but I'm sure they'll have some good singles.

I am also really looking forward to Bad Liutenant but I'd be surprised if they release anything soon.

depends on whether you can play or not, give it a go

I had written a big reply listing all the things we've been promised one way or another over the past few years (comprehensive and well thought out reissues, Freebass, WFTSC leftovers, archival NO gig download service etc) but I think we can all agree if any of them appear in a timely fashion or even at all...

...pigs will fly out of our collective arses

I expect we'll get very little in 2009 from a bitterly split band but the corrected reissues would be the one thing I hope they get right at all costs. You can't take money off your fans for defective merchandise and run... they owe the fanbase that much at least and you can only blame the record label so much.

On a lighter note, some gigs would be very welcome if Bernard and Peter can finally settle their differences in an Alderley Edge pub car park somewhere :thumb: they still have the ability to be one of the best bands out there if they can be arsed.

Looking forward to the Depeche mode record but as far as NO is concernd, i'm awaiting some new NO-re-remasterd reissues with never ever released before remixes of true faith (yeah right:brow:

But hey, technique is out 20 years next year so maybe warners/rhino can re-re-re-release this one again and put it an extensive package with 20 years of acid house hacienda classics attached to it??:dead::nono:

It would indeed be nice if they could release the "2nd" album from the WFTSC sessions.

Wishful thinking.

Depends who trashed them doesn't it?

If the band thought they were shite, they may well be. But if some A+R droid at Warners thought they off-market (or some other weasel phrase which should earn anyone who applies it to music a bullet in the base of the skull)....then they may actually be rather good. Also, they will hopefully be less polished, I like my NO rough'n'ready.

Probably misguided on both counts.

Bullet in the base of the skull? Lay off the weed Cambo

Steve and Hooky frequently mentioned during the WFTSC promotional campaign that they felt the leftovers were "just as good if not better" as what was put out on the LP hence they obviously rated both sets of material quite highly.

Secondly, the label is a convenient scapegoat... New Order especially at that late stage in their career are ultimately responsible for the songs they put on their albums and not Warners.

I dunno. Still find it difficult to work out Steve and Hooky's sense of musical judgement when i listen to 'I Told you So' or 'Jetstream'. Ultimately Warners are a business, and as with any business, it's better to release something saleable, when it is likely to make money. Must be nearly four years since these were recorded, and i hardly see the NO stock going up in that time (sadly).

Perhaps, dare I say it, the release of the missing tracks is regarded as unprofitable on a quality issue?

I don't mind I Told You So... the album mix is a bit ropey but that Velvet Underground-esque Stuart Price mix that leaked out around the time of the WFTSC single is quite good really. A nice heavy beat and the lyrics do flow in some sort of a way (for Bernard)... I think that mix removed most of the Ace of Base reggae-lite influence some fans objected to.

Hooky vocally stated in the press he would not have chosen Jetstream as a single which was refreshing for any member of any band to do especially in 2005. I don't blame him... Jetstream reeks of being an Electronic track and all the hallmarks are there; dafter than usual poppy lyrics, minimal bass and a trendy guest vocalist. Personally I really like Electronic but that track should not have come out under the New Order banner; it was clearly Barney's vanity choon although the Richard X mix is good I suppose.

Perhaps, dare I say it, the release of the missing tracks is regarded as unprofitable on a quality issue?

What, you mean the material is so god awful Warners are curling their toes at having their name attached to it? Hmmm, it's a possibility I suppose.

I agree with everything else you said about Warners being a business though; they obviously are which is why a band like NO would be much better off on a label like LTM for care of their back catalogue.

In an ideal world that is.

I really hope that isn't the case.. but if i was a record company exec, sitting on some tracks which would make money, especially in these times, I know what I would do.

I am almost fearful for NO's already damaged legacy, if these were ever released.

I would rather be pleasantly surprised, but after four years, I am cynical.

While I applaud the efforts of NOOL which resulted in the recall of the recent remasters I can't help thinking that Warners will now think twice before putting out any further New Order product.

Before all the fuss about the remasters Warners probably thought they could get away with sticking any old rubbish out (as long as it had New Order's name on). Now I think they will be very wary about another backlash from the fans if the next release is not top notch. They may just take the easy option and release nothing and maybe concentrate on other bands (whose fans are less demanding).

Bad Lt. - Probably some release. NO - Nowt, although they should just stick the demos up on IChoons and be done with it. Freebass - Er... Tumbleweed again? Warners - NewOrder;TheUltimateCollection containing fuck all new and some ropey coverart.

If anyone has killed any chance of some new material it's the posters on here.

You have supposed fans slagging off basically everything they've released in the last ten years. They may not be at the genius level they were at up to the late 80s, but still everything they've released has been good quality, I was delighted they were still putting out material I was enjoying immensely. But if I was them looking at all the disrespect for the last two albums, for not being able to live up to some impossibly high standard, why bother putting it out there if nobody appreciates it? What else are they supposed to think?

The sad thing is it probably isn't even representative of most of their fans. Most people wouldnt be motivated to post stuff on here unless they felt compelled to moan.

Nahhhh we love 'em.

Warners are twats of course.

BTW, your username ( F^0FF0FF ) in decimal is

5.0295x10^1228703

Which is considerably more than the total number of atoms in the universe.

(ie it's a 5 with 1.2 million 0's after it).

Yes, I am utterly without a life.

EDIT: the OBSERVABLE universe natch.

...ah, that would explain why I'm the God of anti-matter who has been forced to live a 2-dimensional existence in the fourth realm. Fuck!, why didnt somebody tell me F= 5.0295?!?!

Bollocks!

I think the record company might be just a bit more to blame for that. I was merely suggesting they might actually have a very good reason.

And for what its worth, I am a self professed fan of Get Ready, although the title was always a bit of a misnomer.

F is 15 (hexadecimal).

so F to the power of 0ff0ff is a FUCKING BIGNUM!

I think the total number of atoms in the observale universe probably comes in under 10^100

You've got enough there for several gazillion universes.

It's simple- They should just stick it up on IChoons

AND

if they have genuinely split up for good...

Do a limited EP CD release of these songs with U-Myx software so that we can try out hapless best at filling in the gaps and lyrics.

"Supposed" fans  I like that; like we're meant to lap up everything they put out with sycophantic awe. Maybe if we were fans of a lesser band that might be the case but New Order always set the bar pretty high. I don't think New Order attract that type of fan anyway, everyone's got their own take on things even if it is miserable most of the time.

But if I was them looking at all the disrespect for the last two albums, for not being able to live up to some impossibly high standard, why bother putting it out there if nobody appreciates it? What else are they supposed to think?

It's not nearly as one sided as you're trying to boil it down to for your argument. Both albums had their share of haters and lovers with neither really dominating. That's the point of a forum; opposing viewpoints for discussion. At the end of the day the proof is how many people showed up to their gigs which in the case of a fair few here is loyally high. It's also what made the band their money and they know it.

If you seriously think Bernard is sitting at his computer reading these forums with tears rolling down his cheeks deciding "I'm not making any more music for these ungrateful bastards" then you're a bit off the mark. They don't and never have cared what most people think of them... that's part of the charm isn't it?

It's simple capitalism why they (and the label) aren't interested in releasing new material... it's not "feelings" driven. If the label doesn't think it will sell then they won't bother and if anything the majority of this forum has been screaming for them to release new material. The day to day NO fanbase probably isn't big enough to make it financially viable.

The sad thing is it probably isn't even representative of most of their fans. Most people wouldnt be motivated to post stuff on here unless they felt compelled to moan.

I'm not sure how anyone could definitively state what is "representative" of "most fans".

In essence, the best tracks from GR and WFTSC would have made an excellent album:

  1. "Crystal"
  2. "60 Miles an Hour"
  3. "Turn My Way"
  4. "Vicious Streak"
  5. "Primitive Notion
  6. "Someone Like You"
  7. "Run Wild"
  8. “Who's Joe?
  9. "Waiting for the Sirens' Call”
  10. "Krafty"
  11. "Guilt Is a Useless Emotion"
  12. "Turn"

I really do hope they pull their finger out and get back together. As I've said on NOOL before, I would take 20 Dracula's Castles or Jizzstreams for another Crystal or Krafty.

Oh dear! It's been brought to my attention that I've allowed a typo to remain in the word "lieutenant," a word of the utmost importance to pronounce properly, let alone spell. I've let the NOOL community down, the band down, and probably inadvertently cheapened the internet as well... Please don't banish me to a Bono or Sting forum, though that's undoubtedly what I deserve. I know I'm an American, but that's still no excuse. If the unreleased tracks from WFTSC are in any way poor which is entirely possible given the hit miss quality of what was released, you have to wonder HOW they could issue them. I mean, how do you promote it if the band aint together?

There may be enough for a full album but it would be a mistake to release it as such surely as it will reflect on the back catalogue.

Maybe the best way would be to repackage it with WFTSC as a double album then at least it would have some decent singles with it.
