Movement was their peak......
Nah, I do think Technique was a bit of a stunner, hard to follow, etc etc. Even though I'm one of the few who likes Republic (or has lived the low-life), I can see how it pales compared to the best stuff on Tech. That said, Technique's not a perfect record. Low-life deserves that honor, imho. But it is the culmination of their rock-dance hybrid.
Wrong,wrong,wrong...Movement was Not New Orders peak. Technique is their peak...or maybe Low Life. On Technigue and Low Life are almost every fu*king track good. But Substance is best...but it is a kind of Best Of Album

When they appeared, I think Temptation / Confusion 87 mirrored exactly the same versions as the band were performing live at that time? The way we actually regularly 'heard' each track, and probably bore little relation to the original single releases.
It is easy in retrospect to highlight these things, but the original versions are easily the best. Your right, I heard Confusion live lots of times through live tapes and bootlegs in the eighties and thought the synth/pop funky version was great (as NO must have) ... however now they are dated. My point is, it wouldn't have dated so quickly if they had put the very originals on Submarine.
One more thing, the Temptation on Reading '98 DVD ... the best version recorded? - I think so.
I think everyone loves the '98 versh of "Temptation", probably because its closest to how it's played live. It's a bit brief, though....

The version on reading 98 are good but the original... don't know. It could't be the best version. If my are talking versions of tracks I think The Substance version of BLT are the best..but The Best Of version is close

And to reply.. I think their peak was True Faith, at least on our side of the Atlantic.. everyone knows New Order for Blue Monday, BLT and then True Faith...
So maybe their peak was Blue Monday 88 after all... Technique was at their peak too, but it didn't bring them to a new level... it was the sequel..

I agree Kezzer. DM should have been played live recently, even if it was the only one from Technique. Especially cuz it's one of the most Geetar friendly on the album. Lush song! "All the Way" second best.
Technique was NewOrder riding the crest of their peak....substance 87 era (culminating with the reissue of BM88) Great album but the fighting and drug abuse started to detract from their ability to create magic live (at least that's they way the bootlegs sound to me)
Technique is my favourite, I love each second of that album. On the other hand, it´s strange, if you tell me "You're going to a desert island, and you can choose only one record to hear in that lonely place...". In this case, I´d consider to choose Low Life. Wow...:)

I'd pick Substance for that... even if you don't consider it an album, it's an album with all their singles, and mostly 95% weren't on album.. :D
Technique & Low Life were both released when NO were at the peak of their powers and at the cutting edge of music (i'm almost tempted to call them 'Avant Garde' :D) and the release since have shown the band to be on the slide. Republic was just dire and self indulgent, GR was ok but nothing special (or maybe i'm just stuck in the past) I really worry about the forthcoming album and think they will continue down the rockier based sound (look at me, dissing an album before its even been recorded !!) and turn into some pub rock type combo.
Id have to go with 'Low-Life' as pretty much their peak musically, even though they got bigger as time went by.
Sunrise and Perfect Kiss are both very stirring, blends of synths and guitars that have not been better'd on any new order album, therefore, Low-Life is the recorded Peak of Neworder's career. They continued to write great music but they never achieved the same intensity.

If they'd played Dream Attack live in my presence I think I would have just sponteneously combusted with excitement - its just too perfect a song :D
It's nonsense to say that they peaked with "Technique". All their albums have some not so great tracks. The less listenable albums are obviously "Movement" (finding their way with the machines but some good tunes in there nevertheless) and "Republic" (just rubbish except for a few good 'uns like Regret and World).
I reckon most fans will listen to each album in phases. Some tracks on "Get Ready" are better than some on "PCL" etc etc. I remeber going most nutty about "Brotherhood" when it came out. [Noone ever mentions All Day Long which sends shivers down my spine every time.]
"Brotherhood" has a great balance of guitar and keyboard driven tracks. "Technique" has also but the songs are a little weaker.
Those who say they peaked with "Substance" don't know what they are talking about obviously as it's a compilation of their singles from early days.
I've been mad about New Order since 1983 and still find that the extended Temptation and the original, magnificent Confusion stir most emotions and dancefloor twitches respectively. Blue Monday I've had enough of.
We can only hope that the next album isn't a turkey like "Republic" and is as good as all the others. Give us more electronics I say!!

Phil Collins do you think Republic really is a turkey? ... surely with Regret, World, Spooky, Ruined by a Badger and Avalanche are credible songs. Given there is far more quality on Regret it is Movement that is the Turkey, it actually smells of stale cheese when you hold it in your hands its that naughty.
I think most of us concur that Substance is actually a collection of their single releases.
