Erm, used to think so (after Low-life) - but having played it recently it does not hold my attention as well as Low-life and PC&L and Brotherhood and Get Ready. Movement and Republic rarely get taken out for a ride.
I agree. Might just be that it was the first of their albums i got into before I considered myself a 'fan' but I still can't enough of that album, every track a favourite, especially the truly wonderous Dream Attack. 
IMO Technique is their highest achievement, well rounded, as close to perfection as you can get, because of that same perfection I find myself listening more often to Bruvahood or PCL than to Technique. Possibly worst albums with better stand out choons. NO must feel the same since they haven't played live anything from Technique in ages.
Probably. Their songwriting styles and practices changed after the Brotherhood period, with songs being conceived and fashioned in the studio rather than live work-in-progress, which had always been the case from late 81 to 86. It's possible that the songs on Technique sound more polished because we only ever heard them as finished versions, but overall the production is clearer, farmore balanced and almost certainly their most consistent work. No botched edits a la Low Life, no muddy sound a la Brotherhood. Technique also sounds like a New Order recording, unlike the Barney solo album Republic and the hired help of Get Ready.
Nah, their peak was probably True Faith / Substance. They were an unstoppable force at that point in time. Then they finally realised they were a majorly saleable article and just went, "Ah, fcuk it, we've made it now!" then went through the whole popstar shenanigans of 'trying to break America', 'spats between band members', etc.
Personally though, I don't think they've ever topped Low-Life.
Certainly it was that CRAZY song and VIDEO for TRUE FAITHLESS and PLENTY OF SUBSTANCES that ROCKETED them into ORBIT.Then they found fame ,fortune and that little ISLAND IN THE SUN.
Well everyone deserves a SUMMER HOLIDAY,even CLIFF(SIR) RICHARD but take your bloody suntan and leave your BEZZIE mates at home!

Al, would you agree that the new versions of certain songs on Substance never captured the original classic essence? ... why do bands do this? ... Madonna (for example) released her 'best of' CD/record and she too tampered with the original recordings ... why!? ... its the original recordings we want. Makes me mad. I mean, what the f@!k was Confusion all about? ... missed the point of the original entirely.
I agree with Jarvo. "Low Life" can be their "creativity peak" but they were about to conquer the world in 1987.

Mick, a question which often rears its backside up in conversation on this site (and I keep forgetting the answer). The end of the video shows Steve battling his turkey drumsticks to smithereens, whilst Barney blows vapour out of his snout. Is this from a gig or not?

Technique is the only album that I love all songs...
Don't get me wrong, I like all New Order songs (except probably Angel Dust, which I have problems with), but Technique it's probably the only album I have that I can say that I love all songs. For me, the weakest song on this album is Guilty Partner, but I still like it very much... and I'm not quite a fan of Fine Time either, but still, it's a pretty decent song.
Round & Round, Vanishing Point, Dream Attack, Run & Mr Disco, 5 gems.. Run is my favorite New Order track (take that John Denver) I just like the music on that, Mr Disco, despite having a ridiculous title, is one of New Order's best effort IMHO..
Love Less, All The Way, all good tracks...
The only thing I wonder is why we're the only one who knows this album is soooo good.. this is not New Order's best seller...

When they appeared, I think Temptation / Confusion 87 mirrored exactly the same versions as the band were performing live at that time? The way we actually regularly 'heard' each track, and probably bore little relation to the original single releases.

It is easy in retrospect to highlight these things, but the original versions are easily the best. Your right, I heard Confusion live lots of times through live tapes and bootlegs in the eighties and thought the synth/pop funky version was great (as NO must have) ... however now they are dated. My point is, it wouldn't have dated so quickly if they had put the very originals on Submarine.
One more thing, the Temptation on Reading '98 DVD ... the best version recorded? - I think so.

Usually someone mentioned the interview which sees Hooky spinning around on a muscle builder (Reportage or Rapido?) - amongst the chatter one scene shows Hooky next to a rig and highlights of a gig where True Faith is being played ... which I don't think is the famous Glastonbury live version ... and nobody seems to know which one it is. The interesting thing is, this mysterious True Faith sounds awesome.

I couldn't see any reply in the True Faith question Mick and yes the original gag was shite.
Keep digging around in your archives ... I doubt you'll find an answer ... I taped about 90% of everything they ever did on the TV and live etc. and it is not mentioned anywhere but this interview. If you find an answer you deserve a slice of toast and butter. Until then, you'll have to keep eating ants and stale cheese scraped off your boots.

I'm just wondering if they might have played it at one of the Spanish shows in May 87, and then not played it live again until they were happy with it, i.e. Glasto. I know that Barney introduces it as the debut at Glasto, and that of the three Spanish shows there is only one tape (Mollerussa Pabellon), so it is unlikely that there would have been a professional video recording made but no audio tape ever surfacing. I suspect that it really is Glasto footage, as the pro cameras were there, there had been no other live outings at the time the song (and therefore video) was released..........as you say, to be continued.
I think Technique was their peak as any non new order fan is most likely to have that LP (apart from substance which is greatest hits). To back up the argument for Technique, every song is strong (unlike the majority of new order LP's)and the old chestnut - it has sold more than any other of the albums. I think Brotherhood comes a distant second... Whilst we are on the subject of Technique does anyone know why that album was called "Technique"

Republic is their biggest seller, is it not? 
(apart from Substance, that is)
Well I have two copies of Low-Life, two of PCL, two of Movement, two of Substance, two of Brotherhood, and one of everything else, so my biggest-seller is a five way split.
