Gee, as a Depeche Mode fan myself, that's a really tough one.. as ETS is one of my favorite song and the one that got me into Depeche Mode...
Is it, isn't it? Well, that depends of course of your musical tastes, Enjoy The Silence was more popular here than True Faith, which is the most popular New Order song ever in Montréal, but that doesn't mean it's necessairly better, it's different!
I prefer not to compare my best bands, but I can add that I'm never getting bored of New Order's music, while DM, well, I'm not listening to their stuff to often these days...
ooh, let's see...perfect kiss, ceremony, temptation, subculture, world, regret, slow jam, crystal, blue monday (naturally). oh, hell. just start with substance and move from there. and i hope you've discovered joy division, as well! most important. 
p.s. i like depeche mode, too. since 'people are people' in , what, '84, '85?
There are so many good New Order songs - but paying attention to the two songs that you said you liked a lot from Best Of - Regret and BLT, I would say that you should buy Technique first before any other NO album. I am basing that opinion on the songs you said that you love, which leads me to believe that you like their technoie stuff better - Technique is all like that. Brotherhood is good and Republic is too, but they are a little more varied through the album. If you want to branch into the other areas of style that New Order does, I would get Power, Corruption and Lies or Low Life (two of my favs). Also, if the members here slaughter you for loving Depeche Mode, I will come to your defense... if I am too late I will pick up the pieces that remain and ship them postage paid to your loved ones.
Wolfmann, quick aside: every time I see your profile pic I'm reminded of the dog in "The Thing" which gets ripped apart by the alien. God, that's a fucked up movie...
Anyway, every single New Order album should be in Ben's collection by now, he's had a month.....
just get the best of cuz if you consider every song these guys are tripping over to get you listening to, you've got a long time.

Yargh, it's been a long time. Well, I have indeed become a big NO fan now. Who'd a thunk it? I bought 3 16 recently (where's LWTUA in Reading btw?) and it indeed a great watch. Temptation is now indeed my fav. NO song :-D
Yeah, I was a big Cure and Depeche Mode fan before I got into New Order, and I still like them quite a bit. None of their albums seem to get any listens these days, it's always JD or NO...
It's like, I'll go out and buy a batch a cds from new group, then in about a few weeks I'll be spinning JD and NO again. It's just weird. You have JD for when you are pissed off and bitchy, and you have NO for when you are happy... and still bitchy.
With JD and NO, you get Punk, New Wave, Pop, Disco, Rock, the dreaded term "Goth", ect. There's always something for whatever mood you're in. Depeche's music is great, but it seems like they keep doing the same thing, but only adapting to the times. And The Cure, well, I got kind of sick of fat Bob bitching about the same girl in every damn song, it got annoying. Plus, he's married, he should be over it by now.
I still love them both, but their last albums were disappointing in my opinion. Depeche Mode put out what was basically "Ultra, part 2", and The Cure tried to please the fans by making a "Disintegration, part 2".
If the "Retro" box set has thought as anything, it's that New Order could care less about the fans. As they said in many interviews, they just do what they want to do. If that's a good or bad thing, well, I can't answer that.

HOOOAHHHHH!!! What a very nice post here, Low Life. I'm in complete agreement as far as what NO/JD offer in terms of sound, mood, etc. JD rocks, it while NO makes me all shiny and happy.
I'm a big DM fan as well. Exciter was disappointing because it seems unlike NO, DM are NOT getting better with age and may have left their best work behind them. Like your reference to Bloodflowers being Disintegration2. Did you know Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers are considered a trilogy by Robert Smith?
Anyways back on topic, the Order are classic......in fact, I can't think of a better band name, NEW ORDER. mysterious, ambivilent....damn, I really can't think of a better band name!!
