Anybody have the Factory box set yet?

Two questions:

1. Are there any missing beats or channel drops on Blue Monday?

2. Is Cabaret Voltaire's Yashar the 5 minute version or the 7 minute version?

A channel drop is the apparent side effect on most pressings of Blue Monday, aside from the missing beats. It's when the left channel dips really low, and really fucking disorienting to the ears. The perfect mastering of this song is on the 24 HR Party people soundtrack.

Which versions of Blue Monday does this happen on? And whereabouts in the track?

And the missing beats thing......What does that mean?

I've noticed that different versions of blue monday have different amounts of kick drum hits at the start.....

Like one version goes

k k kkkkkk k k k k

and another goes:

k k k kkkkkk k k k k

but I prefer the former because that starts at the beginning of the sequence ....

The fade out/panning issue happens at about 2:25, right where Barney says "I thought I was mistaken..." It's not very noticeable on a speaker system, but with headphones on it sounds like one of your ears is getting plugged up.

I don't own any of the vinyl releases, but I know it happens on the following CD releases:

Substance Power, Corruption & Lies (US) Retro PC&L Remaster

As for the missing beats, you've already listed the differences. "k k kkkkkk k k k k" is the proper drum sequence. The other one you mentioned (although remastered) is the result of the beginning of song being cut off. I really can't see how this has appeared on any album since it clearly throws off the rhythm of the song.

I thought the latter was the original 7" version. Then for the 12" they ended up with the former and everyone preferred that, so now it's the "preferred" version. I think Gillian or somebody described it as a happy accident. Apparently they have played it like the 12" version ever since. You can hear the difference if you compare Singles (7") to Substance (12").

I always thought the 12" vinyl started with more beats.
