Blur, New Order stars form supergroup Friday, June 12 2009, 17:08 BST

By Alex Fletcher, Senior Entertainment Reporter

Rex Features Blur's Alex James and three members of New Order have formed a supergroup called Bad Lieutenant.

New Order's Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Phil Cunningham will unite with James to release an album in October.

"I'm very proud of it, it's a very good album," Sumner told the BBC. "It's pretty guitary too because we've got three guitarists in the band."

The frontman confirmed that the group will be playing live dates later this year and festivals in 2010. Live footage of their track 'Sink Or Swim' is already available to watch online.

New Order split in 2007, following a public row between bassist Peter Hook and the rest of the band.

"We split into two factions, there's me, Steve and Phil. The other is Peter Hook," said the singer. "Basically he left the band, that's all I want to say about it."

James is currently rehearsing with Blur ahead of their summer reunion tour, which includes shows at Hyde Park and Glastonbury.

looks like poor Hooky shot himself in the foot on this one.

so now that we are down to 50% Joy Division, will we refer to songs played live as covers? :evil4:

No, think Hooky actually kept his self respect, and respect for JD and NO. :thumb:

Bernard obviously has an attitude towards Peter and is always going to imply that "it's his problem, not mine" :brow:

They don't even mention the Leroy and Rambo guys. Seems like only one is going to be in the band, but I thought he was doing a large chunk of the writing. Wait and see what actually ends up as the product.

The lack of mentioning of the Rambo and Leroy guy (Jake Evans, I think) isn't really Barney's fault, I think.

Every other article about Bad Lieutenant seems to have a different focus on the members.

For example, there's articles out there that act like it's a mashup (so to speak) between Blur and New Order (remaining 3 members anyway), whereas, that's probably not how the people involved perceive it.

Not to mention, the casual throwing of the word 'supergroup' by the media... :nono:

I have always thought Bernard had a bad attitude problem towards most things. Hooky is a top bloke who obviously couldn't tolerate Bernards attitude anymore - I don't blame him .

its funny how its just hooky who cant tolerate barney anymore. stephen, phil and i dare say gillian all seem to get on with him. maybe hooky just has a large ego that needs to be on stage all the time or doing interviews on tv and updating his myspace etc. maybe the others cant be bothered with that sort of thing...

BERNARD SUMNER SEETHING WITH HOOK

Bernard Sumner has blasted his former New Order bandmate Peter Hook for quitting the group.

Bernard Sumner says Peter Hook can "f**k" off.

The singer has no plans to work with his former New Order bandmate because they no longer speak to one another.

Asked about his new musical project with New Order drummer Stephen Morris, Bernard replied: "It's very guitar based, we're just rehearsing at the moment. We won't be releasing it as New Order, basically Hooky left so we didn't want to carry on. I've not spoken to him since he went but Stephen's spoken to him."

Stephen added to BANG Showbiz: "Don't fall out with anybody, that's my motto in life, one thing - don't fall out, it's not worth it."

However, an angry Bernard then quipped: "That's not my motto, my motto is f**k him!"

Bassist Peter - whose nickname is 'Hooky' - announced in May 2007 he was no longer with the group, but confusion reigned for several months afterwards as the remaining members insisted the band was still together.

In July 2007, the group issued a statement saying: "After 30 years in a band together we are very disappointed that Hooky has decided to go to the press and announce unilaterally that New Order have split up. We would have hoped that he could have approached us personally first. He does not speak for all the band, therefore we can only assume he no longer wants to be a part of New Order."

New Order have not released any recordings since the statement.

But, at least we'll get some new music from both factions this year.. ehm, hopefully.

i could be wrong but i really think barney is mad at hooky because in a way he killed the goose that lays the golden eggs (NO). i mean he left the band and he said he won't allowd the others to carry on with the name NO. so that didn't left too many options but to change the name. and let's face it, money is a big issue here since it's not the same to book a band as NO than to book BadLt. they will pay them less money to play live. the same with the record contract because the name "NO" attracts a certain floor of sales and the name "BadLt" doesn't. so on the business side this is an "expensive" decision that hooky made. on the other hand i agree with him that if you don't feel comfortable with something you musn't go on doing it. but there're some who focus on the "professional" side and do it anyway if it pays the rent and turns on the light.

Yeah, you could really sense the bitterness that Bernard has now for Hooky and I'd agree with you about leaving the band members in a bind, professionally.

I'm split about their breakup. I mean, I'd love to hear new New Order music. But I'd imagine their music would be less interesting if Hooky decided to stay and dial it in. When they didn't give a fook, their music was so much more interesting than their comeback in 2001 and on, where you could feel the internal pressure for hit singles.

I don't think that's true really because Get Ready does not feature obvious "single" tracks. Crystal more than deserves it's due as a brick shit-house of a track but also ticks the "an exciting sound we've not really done before" box.

There's barely anything else on that album that could be considered a bona fide radio "hit". Heavily remixed versions of Someone Like You or Close Range spring to mind but 60 MPH is the sound of a band rediscovering guitars and doing what they want really. Not that I particularly like that track as a single.

Agreed though the earlier stuff had a certain anarchic air about it...

To be honest I think Mr Sumner has every right to snipe at Hooky. I remember PH was being INTOLERABLE back in 2007, shooting his mouth off at every opportunity...

It's horses for courses really. There was indeed a period where Hooky was quite vocal about the split and it's a bit rich observing all the "Hooky fans" (of which I count myself) reacting in faux disgust at Bernard's recent comments. "How dare insult our bass hero etc" is deeply sycophantic and a bit sad unless of course it's Jack and he's your Dad.

It's totally pointless because we - the fans - will never really know what went on behind the scenes and you can't draw much from random quotes in tiny news articles. I prefer to keep the opinion they're both twats (!), they've both probably got very valid grievances against each other but apparently neither will be the first to stand down.

Hooky's more than put his side forward in blogs and now Bernard's been refreshingly honest in print. Seems fair enough to me.

I am looking forward to Hooky's response though

I remember an article a few months ago stating that Steve and Alex James were not really a member, but only played in a track or two. Couldn't find it, does anyone remember such thing?

update:

It was actually a message from New Order PR posted in this forum http://www.neworderonline.com/Forums/MessageList.aspx?ThreadID=45732. Steve and Alex were 'additional musician'.

Which makes me wonder. Did the press receive the same message? If so I see two options:

  1. some journalist totally misinterpreted Steve's role in BL and then others just copy/pasted this first mistake.

  2. Steve (or Bernard) changed his mind and is now a real member of the new band.

This is kind of irrelevant, I know, but I hate to see the press giving wrong information.

I'm of this opinion as well.

I see it clearly. Barney and Hooky were in a pub, when shoe-size-equations were brought up. An arguement ensued, bringing about both of 'em to whip 'em out onto the bartop. Hooky's was bigger, so Barney lost a fiver. However, in later days, Barney's been going around saying that he won the contest and Hooky's been pissed off ever since.

Does that sound about right?

It's hard to make success again when you're in your early 50's. But change the name of the band was the right decision, there's no NO without Gillian and Hooky. :nono:

The info was also posted on the same day by nicos, david and myself on each of our sites.

This is the info we ALL have at present.

Hopefully, very soon, we will get some promo copies of the album and their accompanying press releases for futher info, but, alas, till then, it is a waiting game.

Im sure theres both sides to this story. It just seems a shame to me, the way New Order ended and how a 35 odd year friendship collapsed. I always got the impression Peter was the friendly, open one and Barney the closed book and difficult.

I guess were all human. While the members of say REM, Depeche Mode and U2 (seem to) remain great friends after decades of being in succesful bands theres always bands that have great animnosity between members (The Beatles and Guns N Roses spring to mind).

As ex-New Order members are now in their fifties I would have thought they would be more mature and aware of each others habits/traits now. But then no one but those involved really know the real issues, so Im not judging in any way.

The other sad thing is does this mean playing New Order songs are off limits for any of these offshoot bands? Obviously they wont be the same without the element of the missing member(s).

I just hope it doesnt turn into one long slanging off match. I mean, Hooky and Barney are bound to cross paths as they pursue their chosen paths.

It's just very sad.

It's been sad since Hooky announced that Buenos Aires was the end of the line and that NO were no more. There was the aftermath of Barney and Steve denying this as Hooky insisted it was the case before Barney eventually admitted it and said Bad Lieutenant were on the horizon.

Now the wide-of-the-mark New Order-to-reform bollocks is being promulgated by the likes of Channel 4 Teletext as gospel truth. I kid you not! As Barney, Phil and apparently Steve are involved, they are actually saying that Alex thingy has replaced Hooky and New Order live again!

I had to text them to try to set the record straight. Let's see if they publish it.

I still don't know what it was that made Hooky leave but I think it's very sad that Barney has a bitter 'fuck him' attitude. They were mates for so long, creating some sublime music that will live forever and it's just grim that things are like this.

Steve's right: life is too short.

However, an angry Bernard then quipped: "That's not my motto, my motto is f**k him!"

I bet people are taking this line waaaay too seriously. It's just his sense of humor to say something like that. I seriously doubt he said it with a straight face.

I loved Get Ready and WFTSC so obviously I had my hopes up for another album but honestly, maybe it's for the best to keep things fresh and exciting - I'm looking forward to Bad Lieutenant and Freebass.

Maybe one day we'll see a Freebase single featuring the Bernard Sumner remix, or a Bad Liutenant song featuring Peter Hook.

Doubtful, as they do seem far too stubborn. But don't forget the gap between Republic and Get Ready.

All fights require time to cool down before civility kicks in again.

As much as I hate to say this as well, I can't see BL or FB catching on nearly as well as JD, NO, or even their other side projects.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I've liked what I've heard thus far, just a hunch. :(

I just find it very bizarre how some people come up with the conclusion that Bernard is the obvious mature one here. And Bernard acts like he doesn't even care, and obviously didn't care to communicate with Hooky. Sure, there are two sides of the story. But Bernard is an enigma, he is the way he is.

Why would people want a New Order in their 50s who never talked to each other and just stayed together for stage appearences for the money... just let it go.

I'd be happier if the record company (or whoever) would sort themselves out and somehow release the unreleased tracks from the WFTSC era. (If it's possible...)

This press 'story' and the way it has proliferated is an example of how 'journalists' work these days and the redundancy of news in general. Bernard does one little interview (for the Mojo awards wasn't it?) and this elaborated story is replicated everywhere word for word, despite the fact that there are important factual errors.
