Since the brutal separation of New Order, one was without new of their singer Bernard Sumner. Who returns with a new group one, Bad Lieutenant, a new bass player – Alex James of Blur – and a concert in November to the festival of the Inrocks.
just finished the first album of Bad Lieutenant. Is this a moment of doubt or of relief?
I am, at least at present, of good mood. For a perfectionist as me, this is very hard to accept that an album is finished, that I not more can change such or such detail. Especially that on this album, all plays itself in the details. One does not imagine the work that claims an album. My buddies, that have normal works, think that my life is really easy, that all is only pleasure, that this is not really a job. Nevertheless, I have constantly the impression to push a huge boulder towards the summit of a mountain.
Was this work-site long?
Almost two years, with a sprint exhausting during the ten last months. To find the idea of a song, a good riff of guitar, a continuation agreed, is of course basic, but that represents only 10% of the work. Every member of the group possesses his own studio, one has not therefore passed a single day in an of these professional studios, that cost a fortune and that oblige you suddenly to finish your album in a granted time. We had not this pressure of the time or money: we have therefore passed days and days on details that can appear insignificant. The only limit, this is the size of his hard disc. Of a normal studio, one always frustrated spring. This emergence of the homes studios distressed to all never the music that one hears, she is clearly more complex, more artificial, richer in details.
Is she necessarily better? The urgency, can that have his charm?
Thank you, I have just passed two years of my life on an album, you find it pompous, surproduit? (Laugh)… With New Order, I systematically grated teeth while receiving our new albums: a true feeling of unfinished one, of same rush sometimes. There, at least, the album resembles exactly to what I had in head.
You realize that you recorded on almost five decades?
(Laugh)… Salopard. The years 70 do not count, I was a mioche, it was really the end of this decade and the years 10 did not even again begin… But it is true that to the era, I not at all envisioned such a longevity. It is frightful, and at the same time very satisfactory to be there since so a long time. It is wonderful to have passed more than thirty years to do this than I like the more to the world. Etre to remain creative so a long time, this is a miracle. For this is the unique reason for which I am again here: my creativity. This is an urgency, a drive that refuses to die – a very instinctive thing, that escapes me.
Did that show itself how at the start?
As early as the school. I was null in all the academic matters, particularly in maths and in French. I rediscovered myself cornered in a corner, where it is necessary for me to ask me this question: "I am good to what?" This is there that I realized that the only matters that I liked and where I shined, it was the drawing, the paint, design… I next channeled that towards the music. And when Ian Curtis is dead, I turned myself towards the word writing, for the first time of my life… I again never had measured the word responsibility, vocal melodies. Every time that I light my computer to write a text, I feel a very strong apprehension. But after several hours of work and of doubts, that becomes a pleasure – even if I forbid myself to recognize it. Leave nothing to 18 o'clock and have a text that touches on me 3 o'clock in the morning, this is a fascinating trip. This is a very solitary pleasure, especially after passing his life in group…
You wonder sometimes where you today if would have been quiet had not had the courage of all plate for Joy Division?
I there reflect often… I left the school to 16 years, without the least qualification, without the least goal. But I think that I would have finished a day in art school, to orient me towards design. I always was very visual. I have even, one does not know it necessarily, designé several of our envelopes. The diagram on the envelope of Unknown Pleasures of Joy Division, this is me that proposed it. But it was difficult to the era of Joy Division, then New Order: for political reasons, of sensitivity, I could not imply me as much as I wanted it in the visual ones… But with Bad Lieutenant, I have fun myself at last with this aspect also of the music – choice of the visual ones to typography.
Did that happen how, the end of New Order?
Our bass player Peter Hook left us the past year. I really cannot enter into the details, but… it had problems of alcoholism, did a course of treatment of detoxification and while going out, it decided that it hated us. That did the years that between him and me, there were problems of personalities, that did not go in the reconciliation direction. Our relation had become totally… irrational. We were very different people in the last analysis: we did not divide the same values, the same attitudes, the same humor… no longer were for Us of the all on the same length of waves. It became more and more choleric towards the group end, it was impossible to work together. One not more could bear itself, one hated all the ideas that the other brought to the group… I then decided that it would be maybe wise of at last slave over with people with which these I agree, with that that happens well. Kindness, this is nonetheless not poorly. I am too old and too happy to live with a type that does not like me, I do not want to leave to fade on me sourness and the anger of a colleague. It was very sad, but I could not continue under the name of New Order. Hook had me besides threatened process if I continued without him… I know that while setting off again under a new name, I get going again at the bottom of the ladder, that I will sell less than discs that under the name Joy Division or New Order, two groups that became very strong brands. But of another side, it is necessary to be honest, I work with again musicians, on of new tracks: this no longer is New Order. The group had attained its limits, his explosion was programed.
You continuous to work with the drummer, Stephen Morris, faithful since more than thirty years.
I could not happen me of his humor, of his eccentricity. This is an unbelievable, unique drummer. And then… this is a friend, a type in now. Unfortunately, even if it will play with us on scene, it was not able to record all the batteries of the album, for his girl suffered then of engrave health problems.
Who is part of Bad Lieutenant?
To the basis, this is a trio: Phil Cunningham, the former guitarist of the group Marion, that played with New Order since 2005, another guitarist Jake Evans, that plays since that it is 5 years old, and me. One passed months to play here, at my place. Next, we used four drummers, several bass players – of which Alex James of Blur and a French, Tom, that will be with us on scene.
You produced a lot of groups Factory, notably Happy Mondays, but never New Order. Did you play this role this time?
I effectively produced the album. To the era of New Order, we recruited producers of which the principal role was to referee the disputes, the ego problems between we. It was idiot, but necessary. If I had produced the least song of the group, Hooky would have accused me to pull the cover to me, to minimize his role. Have an argument on every his, every level of every instrument, this is exhausting. It is necessary that a single person takes the decisions, ends up to split: this happened on the album of Bad Lieutenant. This is the first time of my life that I work without the least tension and that was wonderful. These histories of big recorded albums to pulled knives, this is a myth. One needs not frictions to do the music. That renders just the infernal, detestable recording… I prefer the good ideas to the big egos.
The name Bad Lieutenant, is this your choice?
Yes, flown to this film disgusting Abel Ferrara… disgusting and very funny… A redemption history. A quest that I divide. Even if I do not think to have been a person as bad as that… I did the stupid errors when I was childlike: I thought only to have fun me, without being concerned me with the consequences. Today, believe me, I do clearly more blunders to me. In turned notably, I am passed several times to two fingers of the gulf. This is almost a miracle if I am living and healthy spirit today…
A huge novelty with Bad Lieutenant: the guitar solo. Was not that authorized with New Order? T
here already was, notably on Transmission, solos of guitar with Joy Division. The sound of New Order always was in evolution, for a sacred rule was of not to use bands: we discovered the synthés and the cans to rhythms in studio, tested with, then we looked for a means to adapt these tools to the scene. Bad Lieutenant is composed to the basis of three guitarists: it was a not very inevitable that it abandon the occasion.
Which is the calendar of Bad Lieutenant for the months to come?
We go go out the album October 5, I go therefore to rest me during some weeks, then we will repeat, for that does three years that I did not bring up on scene… already blocked Us our first date at the beginning of November, for the festival of the Inrocks, that will be a joy to rediscover the Olympia. To celebrate that, one will play some songs of New Order and Joy Division.

me too,
i would eat the fuck out of paris too!
how big is the venue?
Olympia's a cracking little venue, but it's a Wednesday. Bit of a shit night really.
Besides, the album might well be awful yet (look at the last two Electronic albums
)
Be interesting to see how many Yookay gigs they do though. And what size venues.
I have to keep reminding myself 'this is not New Order, and I really shouldn't be that arsed.' ![]()

Olympia welcomes about 2000 people if the downstairs seats are taken away (expected) and has a three-to-five-row balcony).
Tempting.
First visit in my ancestors' country... hummmm...
But since it's a festival, going across the pound for 45 mins.. they better line up a few other shows lol... though I could have fun taking my vacation in Paris and make it fit with that... I was supposed to take a week off in September, but what's 2 months lol.
We've already started looking at flights, accommodation, etc.
My only concern is booking something so early and them pulling out. It's a long time off yet.
Id really like to go but Im gonna wait as well and see the other dates. which should be revealed very soon.
i am so down for this.
anybody else from the US thinking of going?

is there a descent translation out there?
How can anyone not love the translation of that interview. Personally, I imagine it is pretty much verbatim. Thus:
"Did that happen how, the end of New Order? Our bass player Peter Hook left us the past year. I really cannot enter into the details, but… it had problems of alcoholism, did a course of treatment of detoxification and while going out, it decided that it hated us."
Bad Lieutenant? Bad Gollum, more like.
Cheers Linus
Barney seems to have gone into alot of detail about his riff with Hooky. Facinating insight and very eloquently put by Barney. Interesting.
cheers Al
Wow! Barney breaks the silence at last!
BUGGER! Can't they bring it forward a bit? I'm gonna be knee-deep in nappies!
