First line of Sink or Swim - "Whatcha doing?"

First line of Dynamo - "Hey there whatcha gonna do?"

I really wish I hadn't listened to that. If all the lyrics are of similar ilk then my hopes of a good album are sinking fast ....

The song sounds very good and it is also going to be on the album, so I don't think that it is a B-side but I also could be wrong, but they have to get better artwork then the crap they have on the link.

I agree with the lyrics, its crap - just like Free Basses stuff.

Yeah, the lyrics to that first Freebass single are shite aren't they? Really really crap!!

Oh wait.. There isn't even a single to talk about yet.

Good Point. I have always wondered why your dad sat with those dudes in dresses in NewOrderStory.

Personally, I haven't heard any Freebass (non-demoed) stuff yet...

I am, however, liking the b-side a lot more than the a-side of "Sink Or Swim"! :spit:

We don't expect Bernard to be like Shakespeare of anything...one thing about lyrics is, I think Bernard said in an interview (maybe more than one) that what he writes tends to come from his subconscious.

So maybe that's why the lyrics sometimes are similar? Whatever the reason, I don't really care.

B-Side of what, exactly?

Are they going to try to sell us a copy, once they've given it away for free?

Good luck with that

I admit I giggled a little on hearing a doubling up of "whatcha " and "doin'". Andy McCluskey does this a lot, too, with "walking on air" and "joan of arc" in several songs. Doesn't stop me from liking the track but it is definitely set in my mind as "words he obviously likes to use as lyrics". Ol' Bernard also likes that swimming imagery as I'm rather sure I remember it in the Electronic stuff as well.

:skeptic: I'll just have to not listen to it back to back with other songs with the same word progression in it and it'll be fine.

not bothered about the lyric similarity, but both tracks (now I've got a proper mp3 of sink or swim) sound to me like there's quite a bit of pitch correction on the vocal.

Happy with it musically though.

Was never fully satisfied with dynamos. Battery powered lights were more expensive what with having to buy new batteries but the dynamo could not but slow the wheel up. And of course there is no back light when you're stopped at traffic lights.

Sink and Swim: "What you doing, with that stupid little girl..."

Dynamo: "Hey girl, who you're living with, that guy's just a little kid"

I just hope that second track is a b-side. Quite possibly the worse lyrics yet. Did Barney become a guidance counselor or something?

I don't know how to articulate it but his nonsensical lyrics of the past had meaning and (perhaps an illusion of) depth when viewed as a whole. Somehow he was able to put across emotion and, god help me, a 'vibe' that overcame any lyrical shortcomings. That was part of his genius. These days he's become a charicature of himself, and his lyrics are a shadow of what they once were.

Can you really compare something as banal as:

What's the matter here? Something ain't right Tell me it's not true tell me it's all right (Dracula's Castle)

with

I like walking in the park When it gets late at night I move `round in the dark And leave when it gets light (Subculture)

Subculture is just an example - chosen because it cops a fair bit of flak. Neither are Shakespeare but the point is Barney used to make an art form out of banality. Lately it's just a will-this-do nothingness that grates and detracts from arguably half-decent tunes. Musically I quite enjoy WFTSC for instance but just can't get past those lyrics. I fear BL is going to be more of the same.

Seconded.

It's alright to say Barney's lyrics have always been banal, but they've been simple and lyrical and rhythmic and conveyed an emotion.

These threads all remind me of the Emperor's New Clothes, except nobody's listening to the little girl, they're so determined to love the kings new clothes.

Barney's lyrics have gone from cryptic and awkward with interesting emotional music to back it up, unique... to now the lyrics tend to be banal with unclever wordplay, the music less interesting, less emotional, mundane.

Maybe he has some epic gems on the upcoming record, suppose it's possible. But I fear the record will border on embarassing. Might be a mean assessment, but I feel at this point people will just have to be polite in respect for his history. Being a traditional style frontman with conventional sing-songing songs was not his strength in the first place.

...except for Technique, which sets the standard (unusually) high. Republic ain't too bad either...whatever you think about the music. Bernard's lyrics and vocals on those two albums (and Electronic's first) are pretty much faultless, aren't they? It seems it only went downhill once he started taking singing lessons in 1993...

It's funny. Since English is not my first language I will never assimilate NO music like you guys do. I really never pay attention to the lyrics. I mean, I get them, but to me they're just a groups of words flying around. For example: (don't laugh) I only realized that Love Vigilantes was about a guy who went to war and died by reading stuff posted here.

Let's wait for the album and maybe there will be songs talking about "buying/selling love",doesn't Barney love that one too?

Don't worry about it, Barney's written some of my favourite lyrics of all time. Personal favourites being Love Vigilantes and Regret. With regards to Bad Lieutenant I was merely pointing out that the first lines of each song are similar... which they are. :\ohwell: I think a lot of people have been a lot more harsh than that!

It's a free country anyway. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLL as you might say. :)

Actually, changed my mind my favourite lyrics of his are True Faith. Awesome lyrics.

I think another part of it is that in the 80's one could expect a new album every 18 months with various singles between. The pace with which the band put out music was fast enough to excuse the corny lyrics ("they were in a hurry/on a deadline, etc."). With Bad Lieutenant being the first new music Barney has put out in almost five years, it's like "really? You don't have anything more than that to say?"

All those "hey you, what're you doing?" lyrics come across like an old man trying to impart wisdom to someone much younger, when we all know there's never been wisdom in his songs. I'd rather he sang "you there, get off my lawn!"

Even if some of Barney's lyrics from the 80's seemed a bit nonsensical, lots of them remained somewhat cryptic, vague and left open for interpretation. Usually it was a series of lines that seemed to fit together. Even with the more predicable and obvious lyrics, he at least attempt to sing them in different ways to cover up the lyrical shortcomings.

With Get Ready, WFTSC and even the last two Electronic albums, the lyrics leave nothing to the imagination and follow the same rhyming structure and vocal melody for nearly EVERY single song. He practically sounds deadpan on WFTSC. Perhaps it was the Prozac or him cutting back on drinking (less sub-conscious thinking) that made him less interested in lyrical content, but I do give him a little credit on Sink or Swim since it sounds like he's attempting to sing with some kind of emotion again.

Emotion? Shallow as a puddle maybe. :uhoh:

Barney has had the sorry breakup of his longterm band of 30 years, and dealing with reaching the age of 50... both subjects could be very personal subjects for song writing. Morrissey and Mark E Smith are still doing the same thing they have done for years, and still stay fairly interesting. Wire is not groundbreaking anymore, but makes a respectable attempt at age 50. Miracle Cure, Dynamo (fragment), and Sink and Swim seem like songwriting101.

Maybe Barney is too happy. It's nice he is still making music, but hopefully it won't get to the point that everybody will have to patronize Grampa Barney by saying he is a genius and he is great no matter what he does, because he did too many drugs.

See that's interesting, I would lump Mozzer in with Barney (and Michael Stipe another glaring example) as someone whose lyrics - and consequently songs - have lost all mystique and obtuseness in exchange for plodding literalism and bad poetry.

I disagree completely with almost everything here. He has a gift for writing upbeat, take-on-the-world, believe in yourself tunes that have a great emotional sweep to them that don't come off as corny or insincere.

I imagine that type of song takes much more to successfully pull off then the 'cryptic, postmodern nihilist, world-without-meaning-where-you-can-string-any bullshit-together-as-long-as-it-sounds-bleak-and-intellectual you'll-get-a-free-pass' *cough Grizzly Bear/Bloc Party cough* type song.

However, the cover for Sink or Swim is AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL - wtf are they thinking!

Isn't this the whole point that everyone else is missing? Bernard has been producing this kind of music/ lyrics for years - which is what most of us like about him. Musically the Stones, Bowie, Neil Young, Stipe, Dylan, Morrissey, Mark E. Smith etc are all long term musicians who are essentially doing the same thing successfully (ok maybe not Mark E.) - do we expect groundbreaking now??? Those musicians who do change styles are generally attacked for selling out. Do we want Morrissey or Bernard to start sounding like the Arctic Monkeys or Friendly Fires or whoever?

If we were to change the medium to literature do long term writers/ poets suddenly change style? Artists? Actors? Sports people? - will Ronaldo gliding past Cheslki players to win the Champs League for Real this year be dismissed because it was the kind of thing he has been doing at Old Trafford for 6 years???? Of course not.

I for 1 will be buying the Freebass and Bad Lieutenant albums hoping that both Hooky and Bernard are continuing to produce the type of music I have always enjoyed- not because they are attempting to imitate whatever sad new hopeful band the NME say are in this month. I will go to the Manc BL gig hoping to be entertained as NO have always done at their gigs and if it's half as good as most of the NO nights I've had then I will be pretty happy.

You are right about that , people here put everything down that NO does, from Republic to WFTSC, these are good albums and they don't deserve the bashing that it gets from people, even after a while I started thinking like them and it is no good, Sink or Swim and Dynamo sound good also but again people here are putting them down, hey people Barney is almost 50 and at that age it is very hard to be making cutting edge music , just be thank ful that we are still getting good music from him.

The cover for Sink or Swim is just the promo version, the artwork is still yet to come so don't worry.

My least fave Barnster lyrics are those 'Hey let's get our proverbial acts in gear' shite. That's why Close Range is the worst track on Get Ready and 'Hey Now What You Doing' the worst NO song title.

Actually, I think you've completely missed my point. my argument is that Barney, Mozzer and Stipey, far from 'doing the same thing' have actually significantly changed their styles from something poetic, intangible and affecting to something more linear and predictable. Barney is under absolutely no obligation to be 'groundbreaking' but he owes it to himself and his art to at least not regress.

Favourite Barney lyric

The chorus to "All The Way" - probably the only couplet that's up there with some of Ian's

If I remember correctly Bernard Sumner said that he would abandon making music altogether if this project is not well received,I can't find the exact quotation but if that is the case then I hope he is not in the habit of checking out these comments..Or maybe when the project sinks he will go back to the day job..I also would imagine that it would be pretty difficult for his fellow musicians to offer any criticisms when the lyrics he comes up with are on the weak side considering his past glories and the fact that they are novices..

A bit hard to actually work out what your point is, actually.

So, you preferred Barney's earlier lyrics to his newer ones, OK. But - you think he 'owes it to himself and his art' to not regress (by definition, not go back to how it used to be). So, what you are saying is you don't want him to write like he used to. You'd prefer something different to what he's doing now....but it doesn't need to be groundbreaking. Don't expect much, do you?

I'm not denying things are different now in most things NO-related, but do you do things the same way now as you did over 20 years ago? CTB :bear:

I heard Dynamo today and wasn't that much impressed with it, it sounds like a B-side from Twisted Tenderness, let's hope that the rest of the songs on the album are not like that, maybe that's the reason they are giving it away with the Sink or Swin single, but to be honest Dynamo is nothing to be impressed with, sorry but I have to be honest.

Wouldn't that be lead singer of New Order?

Wouldn't that be a good thing?

Yeah, back to how things stood when they got back together in 1998 and did the comeback gig at Reading (I think),by that time it was clear that Electronic was not going to set the world on fire and Monaco had done well with the very New Order sounding What Do You Want... So,basically if Bad Lieutenant and Freebass both prove not to be what the world is waiting for then I think we can expect New Order to reform in late 2010 early 2011??
