Movement

In view of the fact that Saint Etienne are bringing out a 're-produced' version of 'Foxbase Alpha',done by Richard X & called 'Foxbase Beta'(wahey!),& seeing as tho' the production of Movement is so derided,by NOOLERS & the band themselves,what are the views of said same 're-production' being carried out on it,and,whose hands could it be trusted with to make it what it should've been? I've long thought about this before,really thinking the band could do it themselves but considering the current relationship,that isn't going to happen anytime soon,and also because,visiting the recent Youtube link on here to view some old nuggets,just having my feelings cemented on how much the songs are better live.I fookin' love Chosen Time live,Denial,Senses & Truth are great too.Fook me,went on a bit there,so over to you......

I think it could do with a complete re recording really, if the original multitracks still exist, which I doubt, i would think most of the problems with the production were due to the recording not being as good as they could be, let's face, Hannett had completely lost interest by this point.

Given that this is never going to happen, I'll allow myself to be completely free to choose any producer(s).

I would love to hear what Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois would make of this, I know it's getting a bit too close to U2, but the genre would be ideal for them, that would mean it wouldn't stray too far from the original style, if you put it in the hands of Richard X (Who's work I love) it would become a bit of a joke.

Also might have been interesting to hear what Martin Rushent would have done with it, post stranglers & buzzcocks, pre Human League.

Who produced Sonic Youth's EVOL? I feel like Movement and EVOL are like second cousins or somesuch. Especially with regard to the drum sound.

It'd probably make some people on here puke, possibly including myself, but would be curious to see what Carlos D (of Interpol) would make of remixing select tracks.

I love Movement,,,and maybe when it came out we were disapointed,, this was a group saying fuck to the past ,fuck to the future,, we move on despite...so what if n.m.e hated it,so it goes,,on.

That's fair enough,each to their own,IMO,it doesn't,Hannet's production chokes it,with the exception of DNE.I'm not talking about a remix,but something to closer to what it should've been.Have a listen to 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' from Saint Etiennes' MySpace page & then to the original,I'm not saying go that far,but for me,I'd be definately up for the idea,& I'm against any classic Order stuff being touched as a rule,they usually turn out fooked up

i remember back in school days we've always tried to pretend we like MOVEMENT esp in front of girls who listen to duran duran all day - gave us a lil bit of extra snob value.... but honestly i think MOVEMENT did sound very refreshing if u've been listening to lots of Bauhaus or clock DVA....:D

EVOL was self-produced with the assistance of Martin Bisi. One of my favourite albums, that. Now that you mention it, I suppose it does share similarities with Movement.

I love EVOL as well. And yeah, it does have a similar kind of sound...tracks like Star Power and Green Light come to mind in specific.

Maybe somebody with a lot of bootlegs could put up a "Live Movement", pick some really good live examples of each track.

I was just watching Taras Shevchenko and man, the performance of Truth from that show is utterly fantastic. It just sounds menacing as hell as opposed to the much slower, kind of undead album version.

Overall though, I actually like the production on Movement.

The Movement question does feel a bit redundant though if you factor in the 81-82 Peel Sessions. To me that's like an alternate album, and if I want to reach for "darker" New Order, I go for that.

I know We All Stand is a PCL track, but the Peel Session version is really cool. It's like the Talking Heads on tranquilizers.

Now that SONIC YOUTH been mentioned, I recalled reading an interview with Thurston where he said an album producer or manager? (cant remember) told them immeadiately after they finished an album (cant remember which album, could be GOO) that they 'sounded like New Order...not in a bad way but in a good way'

I seem to remember something like this too. I think it was actually EVOL or Sister, and their tour manager in the UK was like, "this is as good as a new order record" and thurston being bemused. Either a video clip or in Azzerad's book Our Band Could Be Your Life (that guide on 80s American indie).

PS. The chapter on Mission of Burma is classic.

Flood did work on it.

As it was one of his first production credits, and Hannett was losing the plot, his 'sound' didn't make it to the final mix.

Taras is a great example,all the Movement tracks are fookin' quality,I play it to death,much closer to how I feel the album should have been

Agree - Movement has a very claustrophic feel once you get past DNE. But you have to bear in mind the time and the circumstances. I think it worked then and now (if you're in the right frame of mind).

I love the bit where he grinds the guitar on the amp, the effect is awesome. That entire performance is very dark, fast and aggressive. This is also the last official video where they still had that smart clean look. Then they just walk of stage towards the end of temptation, so cold and powerful.

The epitome of cool.

Don't want to get all 'Paul Morley' or anything, but for me, in the same way Closer sounds like despair, depression and alienation, Movement sounds like bereavement, sadness, and uncertainty.

I wouldn't want either of them sounding any different really - they captured what must have been a fucking trauma to live through. You don't fuck around with that.

If it was upo for a remix from anybody esle apart from NO then I would choose The XX whose debut is full a spacious beauty, might suit Movement.
