BL Live Better than the CD/MP3/etc. because of Steve?

Having listened to album oh about 30 times now, and having heard the live tracks from Radio 2 several times, I am convinced that Steve by himself makes them a better live band than CD band. I realize he is on only 2 tracks on the cd, but the drumming is just ok on the cd. Thoughts???

Every track from Radio 2 sounded infinitely better with him behind the kit, especially Shine Like the Sun. My big question is will he be playing a traditional kit or his existing kit from the last few NO tours? I'm not a drum guy beside playing Rock Band, but I think I can tell the difference between the two.

I like Steve as a drummer, but I don't think the live tracks will sound exceptionally better just because of him.

I know we all like Steve, but I also think it's rude to the other drummers on the album to say that...they contributed to the album as well.

I'm not disparaging the drummers on the cd in any way. Quite like the cd. But the 3 tracks played live on Radio 2 simply popped and the first thing i noticed was how infinitely better the drums were on those live tracks.

Funny, I think Jake Evans' brother played some of the drums, or maybe I'm mistaken....

Yep, Matt Evans plays drums on some tracks.

But I don't think BL's songs really need a really strong drum sound..so that's why it doesn't matter to me whether Steve's on drums or whoever else, as long as the song sounds good to me.

I would agree that the 3 live tracks have a better sound, I think the simpler production sounds better, and maybe the lack of autotune suits Barney better. As for Steve on drums, it's gotta help, certainly can't hurt. Seems to make Sink or Swim better.

I agree with leather_girl completely.

The drummer on the album helped establish the feel and groove of the songs. Something that Steve can slot right into since he'll be performing those parts live. Also, Steve is a solid drummer - but not a fantastic one. (Yes, I can speak because I've been playing drums 33 of my 37 years). It'll be a good thing for him to perform some of the other drum parts in a manner that he might not perform otherwise himself.

The drums parts on this albums don't need to be flashy; the song don't really allow for it. You might be able to/could sneak in a few cool fills per song, but it wouldn't really add something to the song as a whole.

The drummer did an amicable job on the album. Sometimes it's best to just 'stay in the pocket'. There's nothing worse than an indulgent drummer! (Except an indulgent guitarist, natch.) _

I certainly think it makes it a bit more exciting to have Steve perform live - but that could also be a secret x-factor to help promote BL and generate interest extra interest - seeing how there are (essentially) 3 ex-members of New Order.

Plus, the familiarity of having Steve around is gonna be good for Barney too, I think.

I sort of think that the live incarnation of BL will be the true one. Steve was originally supposed to drum on the whole record byt couldn't because of his family situation and illnesses.

Sink or Swim sounded much better live with Steve's drumming, as did Twist of Fate. Play the live versions against the album versions and hear the difference.

In the record, Steve's drumming and programming on Poisonous Intent is dynomate, tight, kinetic, rhythmic, totally danceable. Thats why PI sounds pretty much like a New order dance track (along with Bernards loads of synths on this track).

But what really, really surprised me is Steve's drumming on the album versions of Runaway and Running Out of Luck. two pretty, meldoc mid temop songs made totally groovy and tight by his drumming and programming.

Don't know about much about technical drumming details, but I think Steve has his own distinct personality in his drumming, and would have helped the whole album. I think Steve helped set the emotion and uniqueness of 80s New order and Joy Division. Morris adds something very good to the bands, even if it is hard to define. I though Runaway and Running Out of Luck were two of the more New Orderly sounding tracks on Never Cry Another Tear, after the first four songs... now I know why, it's Steve.

Think you're talking about Steve Morris from New Order not Joy Division's drummer

I know we all like Steve, but I also think it's rude to the other drummers on the album to say that...they contributed to the album as well.

Who are the other drummers on the album then???

You are totally right, and the same goes for Poisonous Intent. When I heard those snare hits, I knew it had to be Steve.

I don't know how anyone can say Steve is not a fantastic drummer. I do agree that he adds a special something to NO's sound. I can't think of anyone else who is both such an excellent drummer & programmer in one. Like for instance, when I listen to Electronic,I miss Steve. I for one, think NCAT would have been a better record if Steve had been present for all of it. He's just so modest & dependable that he winds up being taken for granted & even overlooked a little. One of the things I always admired about him is how he was never intimidated by technology. I mean who else would say that they always wanted to be a drum machine.

Steve developed his own style (with a little help from martin?). A very direct on point machine. Just listen to the beauty of Transmission, Atmosphere, or Ceremony. I had never seen any human being play something like that. These tracks are truly timeless. It took me months to play ceremony exactly like Steve. He might not be a ‘serious (boring) learned musician’ he has something better than that....talent, creativity, heart.

Fuck off Neil Peart!

You hit the nail on the head. :)

I have two favorite drummers.

Keith Moon.

And Steve Morris.

Both are total opposites in terms of style and technique, but both play with talent, creativity, and heart.

Steve's drumming is tight, danceable, rhythmic, up front, and subtle. He is just amazing.

Steve's a brilliant drummer and I have to wonder about anyone who doesn't think so. :nonono:
