The problem with New Order post 1989 and Freebass

Hooky has run out of riffs. All his stuff after Technique is a bunch of notes high up on the fret board but its mostly crap. He is the best bass player in my opinion I just don't think he can do much more that's as good as things like Age of Consent, the riff in Loveless. WFTSC is not a bad riff but come on, he only has 6 strings and what, 30 frets. He is tapped out. The riff in Theives Like Us is amazing too.

Listen to this stuff without having a hard on because your hero Hooky is on it. It's crap

Getting cross after being proved wrong that he can still write a great bass part after 1989? :nono:

Umm, the riff in Theives Like Us is a ripoff of Hot Chocolate's "Emma".

I even had a phone call earlier this evening and was told, "After hearing the Freebass stuff on Myspace, I've changed my mind. I DO want to go to see them live!"

People reacting to some clips with a massive watermark plastered all over them and in crap sound quality on a myspace site...

It's not, it's amazing, I just hate the continuous voiceover, he could have placed it at the start and in the middle of the song, it would have been enough... hear the last two tracks on the player, they're ace!:thumb:

:stockresponsetocriticism:

If the 'watermark' had been turned down a few decibels it would be tolerable and still serve it's purpose. It's pretty hard to hear the music as it stands.

...but the stuff about Hooky being defunct post '89 doesn't stack up.

That's not fair. The OP clearly doesn't know his bum from his thumb.

If Hooky's band are shit, I'll lead the charge. You're only as good as your last. But Hooky's been consistent since Joy Division.

Err, apart from that awful reggae thing, natch.

Bit harsh you think, but even if this was a true assessment... so only 10 years of great music, then he got older and stuck to the same style with a more sporadic output. What the hell do you expect? What do you want from him? This is just bitching, not a real arguement.

I haven't listened to much Freebass apart from a few songs on the myspace player, so I can't really comment on that.

It is an interesting question hypothetically, whether or not it is possible for the entire human race to run out of notes, to use up all the melodies and chord combinations in the entire world so that nothing sounds original, and could a supercomputer or something attempt to predict that.

But I don't really think Hooky's run out of notes or ideas.

Oh fuck off  in this instance you do actually have a point about the Hooky bitching but it's a pity you don't seem magnanimous enough to extend this courtesy to Bernard as you engage in this type of thing against any of his output 24/7 on these forums; it's become your trademark a bit. Only a few days ago you were insinuating Barney out to be a prima donna or "lightweight" incapable of playing a supporting slot (for Bats For Lashes and PSB) until a few sane NOOLers pointed out he's done it many times in the past as part of early Joy Division and New Order.

You're full of shit

As for the thread starter; Cairns is a notorious shit stirrer who has come close to the bone about personal details to do with band members in the past. I'm not sure why he's on here other than to stir up trouble... best ignored. Wouldn't surprise me if he's actually an alias of someone else who's been banned here multiple times...

Biggy's absolutely right though... Freebass will be judged on what they put out. The earlier demos sounded a bit ropey but the recent(ish) Burgess song sounds great so I'd like to hear more of that please. The EP should be well received.

Not worthless, I just hate flagrant hypocrisy

Isn't there a Bad Loot thread somewhere you should be laying into?

Isn't Barney passing himself off Cairns? :evil4:

I admit I am not a huge Hooky fan (hello,he broke up NO?) but even I would never attack his musicianship. Hooky's a genius! No other bass player comes close to him!

Maybe being away from Barney will rejuvenate him or better yet,his competitive instincts will kick in & he'll try to outdo him. :uhoh: That's what I'm hoping anyway!

for the record, that'll be 24 frets on the shergold (that's the six strng), 21 on the Yamaha (4 string that is what he uses in the studio) and 22 on the Eccleshall (4 string that he uses on stage)

You obviously don't know much about bass guitars, a 30 fret bass would require your arms to be an extra six inches longer.

Before you slate someones musical skills, try learning the instrument yourself.
