Kelly Macdonald's 'Cover' of Temptation from Trainspotting

I remember running out and buying Trainspotting soundtrack 'orange' and then 'green' trying to find a snippet of this song to no avail.

I always thought this song should be song by a female vocalist (maybe a post idea) and Kelly makes it truly haunting.

My question is... Does anyone know if this siren song was ever any longer? (DVD outake, making of..., etc) OR whether any ethereal woman vocalist (like a Sarah Cracknell) has covered it?

I realize I ask the impossible, but everyone here seems to sleep and breathe NO.

On the recent Cleopatra records tribute album, the version of Temptation is sung by a woman (apparently). I thought it was awful precisely for that reason.

Huntsy, I take it your "pull together" comment means you haven't heard it but agree with me on the principle that New Order songs in general, and Temptation in particular, should not be sung by women? Except perhaps 1963. The singer on that version of Temptation is identified as "Joy Bumpass." I'm not joking about that.

I used to be very precious about New Order songs, not wanting anybody to touch them. Did you ever here the Smiths tribute album a couple of years ago? - dear me, what a load of shite. If the same thing happened to the order, well, I'd probably be very upset and need to smoke blow. Anyway, the older I get, the more I think, hmmm, some New Order covers might be good if they're done properly by decent musicians and bands. Dare I say it, I did like the Ferente version of BLT and played it quite a lot.

Now I've not heard much of the bump-arse lady but I couldn't rule out ladies singing the order out of hand. Who know's Patsy, some bitches may come good on this one.

Well, Huntsy, I don't know, you tell me how you knew my deep dark geographical secret. Never heard the Smiths tribute. Truth be told, the Smiths never really entered my world. Take my word for it, though, Joy's version of Temptation should never have seen the light of day.

Patrick... I'm sure your right on that one. She sounds like an arse. The Smiths did rock my world, but then again so did many crisps manufacturers... so perhaps I'm not the best judge.

I'd second that!! Why not an entire toolbox of ... er...tools shoved up there as well.A Black and Decker workbench might be a bit tricky though.

I think there's an interest with good covers. Like Frente's BLT. Just show how great this song is, even stripped down to its bare bones

Some great points have been made since my original post, but I think Huntsman is on the right track. NO songs are more than just 3 lads and a lass singing tunes...

I think everyone could agree that a NO song is a masterpiece because of the image, lyrics and music. However, I would argue that taken individually these facets are still very powerful and just as meaningful.

Think about it...

1. just looking at their covers, you see a band that is more than what appears... many of you have the posters, not just because it is of a song or a band, but because the image itself is beautiful and powerful.
2. the lyrics even done karaioke (eek!) still evoke a powerful feeling or image... I agree with Neil Tennant of PSB that Bernard is an underrated lyricist... writing songs that you never really know what they are about. (paraphrased from Story) and they allow your mind to create a vision.
3. and well the music... that’s a given! I bet a NO song would sound good from a middle school recorder group.

Bottomline, all the components of NO song (image, lyrics, music etc) are remarkable by themselves (and yes better together) and if others can provide a talent (images, remixed music, vocals, etc) in the spirit of the piece then it should be welcomed and appreciated.

And with this point... I approve of a young nymphet singing Temptation!
