I'm hoping (and I accept this is the big burly man of hope kicking sand into poor Mr Experience's face) that this will be a decent nightclub that does gigs.
If it's a yellow-and-black-striped cavern of a place with a crap sound system playing Voodoo Ray over and over again I won't get upset, but I doubt I'll be visiting a lot.
Fac251d has already been allocated to Steve and Gillian "Loved it (the new factory)" in 1990. if yer gonna pillage your past , do it right.
Our house number is 1051, if A=1, B=2, etc then F+A+C=10. So we live at FAC51. No yellow and black anywhere.

I think this is poor, Manchester seems to on a big nostalgia trip these days. Its turning into Liverpool... Get over it and move on!!
I'm surprised at how many negative posts are about this, I think its fantastic news. There are so many run of the mill nightclubs that play crap music, if theres a new one that plays decent music then I am all for it.
What is wrong with holding onto the past and embracing the future at the same time? Im sure this will be a great club which plays a good mix of classics and good contemporary music.
I guess we will have to wait and see!

They should play "Something Good" by Utah Saints over and over.
Biginoil wrote: I'm hoping... ...that this will be a decent nightclub that does gigs.
They've been collecting demos and Myspace info from bands for a while now, so plenty of gigs should be on the cards. They've also got a few new promoters signing up to run particular club/live nights as well.
It all seems to be far better organised this time - I certainly hope so, as with previous experience, surely the same kind of debacle couldn't happen again... ...could it? ![]()
EDIT: A few people here have mentioned liking "The Joy Formidable", so I put them in contact. That should be at least one gig that a few people here will attend!

Here's an idea Colin, might be a strange one to grasp but it'll all make sense at some point.
Why dont you just go to one of many venues in Manchester which does live music and a "nightclub"? Two weeks ago, when i was in Manchester, I managed to go to two of these venues on the same night! I saw Lost Knives and Detroit Social Club in Ruby Lounge, in between these bands i saw Air Cav at Cross Street Unitarian Chapel, and after all this I went to Retro to watch some band who was on downstairs, and they had some kind of club night on there. Although me and John decided to go back upstairs.
Ultimately Colin, are you really interested in seeing any new bands? Its not like Freebass or the next Johnny Marr wank fest are going to be playing this place any time soon, is it? You only want to go because of the Factory name and the Peter Hook association. You will probably have absolutely no interest in any of the bands who are playing, and if you do watch them, you will probably just call them shit unless someone who you like tells you differently.
Chris, Joys are playing the Ruby Lounge on their next tour. Its unlikely (but not impossible, I guess) that they will play this venue. Their schedule is rammed.

This is complete nonsense.
There are so many places that play decent music! If you want to hold onto the past then either get yourself down to one of the seemingly weekly Hacienda reunion nights that happen across Manchester.
What makes you think this will be anything different than an overpriced 5th Av with the ocassional band on? There are hundreds of venues across Manchester catering for all kinds of tastes, plus a ton of gig venues. Does the city really need another one, especially one so grounded in the past?
After a dodgy couple of years, music in Manchester is starting to thrive again. Air Cav, The Longcut, Daniel Land and the Modern Painters, Jo Rose, etc. All fantastic bands/artists. But whats gets the attention. Oh yeah, a bunch of has beens harking back to the past. What a complete joke.

From what I understand, there may be stuff I will be interested in. But I certainly wont be at any of the overpriced, half arsed, harking back to the good old days nonsense that most people will be attracted to.
bloody hell liam your praising the longcut,i remember you calling them 'pointless noise' a couple of years ago! glad you've changed your mind, open hearts is the album of last year by a country mile and they're fantastic live i must've seen them 50+ times
as for the club i think it'll be worth keeping an eye on as a live venue
Glad someone is paying attention...
Some of the early longcut gigs were for me torturous. The first album was very hit and miss (although Tried and Tested Method easily one of the best songs of the last decade). But, as you say. second album is a corker.
Liam, I'm not really sure what I did to deserve any of that, or what this project has done to upset you so much.
You're quite right that the Factory connections interest me, but thanks for pointing that out to everyone. This is a New Order site, people come on here because most of them share an interest in this sort of thing. Why would they come here if they weren't? Perhaps you could answer that.
People are putting these Hacienda revival nights on because, as I understand it, they are popular and they make money and they make people happy.
This new club is using the Factory connection for a bit of extra publicity and face it, it needs all the help it can get in the present economic climate. And at least the Factory connection is real, not like most of the clubs and venues around the world that plaster a bit of hazard warning tape around their flyers and hope that people will make a connection.
In fact, people will probably be interested to see this place as much because it was a pretty good nightclub for a few years after Factory moved out.
Congratulations on all of your nights out, that's a great achievement. The fact that I will probably not see your pissed-up, obnoxious face at Hooky's club is probably a bigger draw than the maple floorboards.

If people are deluded enough to think this wont be an overpriced shithole, then fine. Of course, I would be most in favour of the opening night lineup being exactly the same as the Monaco gig at the Ritz in 2007, because you would expect the same derisory amount of people to attend (or less, because I wont be there, nor would at least two other people I know).
Even if the Factory connection is genuine, (which, I suppose it is, but its very weak) it still doesnt stop the venue from overcharging people to hear stuff which was in vogue 20+ years ago. And thinking about it, does the official tag really make that much of a difference? No, of course not. We all know about Hooky's DJ-ing skills, (or lack thereof). What the official tago does add is a premium, people are being sold the factory name and a 'genuine' link. And people will be charged for that? Furthermore, we've all been to a ton of 'unofficial' nights, does it really make that much of a difference? Apart from the fact that (some of) your money is going to someone who is currently charging £18 to hear them talk?
Liam- although you might be right in some of the things you are saying you have to remember that there are many 30-40 somethings with families who don't have the time/ wherewithal to listen to, or indeed get out to see these fantastic new bands. Seeing/ hearing old favourites at least guarantees a decent night out unlike the roulette of seeing a new band.
you should get that shoulder looked at Liam, that chip is becoming cavernous.
I suppose i should take note of your ever all-encompasing opinion, as it's always right, and never should be questioned as incorrect, why should anyone doubt you listen to better music than everybody else, you're Liam after all. I'm sure you're views on pricing at the new club are based on thorough research, having frequented it for some time, and observed all it has to offer clubbers and performers eh?
or are you quite happy paying a fiver for a can of red stripe in night and day, as they cram 5 bands onto the stage, with an engineer running the P.A. who REALLY doesnt like ANYBODY, all because Guy Garvey bought a cup of coffe there once.

What is wrong with playing some good indie classics along with new bands? It almost sounds like you are ashamed of Manchesters glory days.

Whats even funnier Jack is that you've been coming on the board for years now, making various implied comments that Freebass are going to do this, do that, do the other, and it never, ever happens.
I presume this is a tacit gig announcement? I dont see what else it could be.
But I'll tell you what. £20 to Cancer Research says Freebass or the next band Johnny Marr joins doesnt play this venue by 31st December 2010.
That'll be £20 more than you gave to the Oxjam gig that you blagged into, you so readily slag off an a regular basis ![]()

What this really is, is a chance for Hooky to cash in, which is more than fair enough seeing how much money NO lost over Factory / Hacienda in the past.
If anyone feels this is an affront to human decency then the answer is simple; don't go.

hmmm........

For those in Manc that day and intending to pop along, the opening night has apparently been confirmed by NME as being Friday the 29th.
Is that bit about the premises having remained empty since 1993 correct? Seem to recall others on here saying there was another club in that building for a number of years.
Paradise Factory was there for quite a few years, which was a club. It started off as a strictly gay club but became progressively less so.
It has been empty for the last few years except for 6 months where The Warehouse Project took it over and ran a series of nights.
Yup, as Johnny James said, it was a club as recently as recently as a couple of years ago - a couple of mates went the day before that Hacienda Warehouse Party under the railway station.
So, as usual, the NME has got it completely wrong! ![]()

I'm a bit gutted I can't make this. I was also supposed to be going to see Hooky DJ at Bar Bliss in Leigh that night, but now I can't do any. :(

The article posted last night appears to have disappeared from NME's index of news articles although the earlier link still works.
Being re-written with more info p'rhaps? Could easily just be the dysfunctional NME site acting up due to the sheer weight of flash ads.

I was surprised too. I got invited to the Leigh event a couple of months ago, so I suppose he might have cancelled. But there are other DJ's to cover at the Factory night so maybe he'll hotfoot it over to guest in Leigh and be back before the end (he does drive fast afterall) ![]()

In simple Queens ingerlish.. whos on doing what, carn't be arsed with riddles. i.e. is it worth turning out for
It's looking good and can only be a good thing for Manchester.
However, they don't half go on about all 'the history' within these walls when Factory was located here (for all of three years when the label was a bit shit), and turning an office building into a club etc.
Well, it WAS a club for around ten years as Paradise Factory.
Short memories.
I can't believe they've put back the opening so that Hooky can DJ in Leigh. Where is Leigh, anyway?
I have booked my flights from Weeze to Birmingham and the train from Birmingham to Manchester and return.

So anyone going to bother giving reasons as to why Freebass arent playing at this?
Andy Rourke got a DJ set in Tranmere?
Steve, you say on your site quite clearly that Freebass are making their live debut at this event. Thats clearly not the case. So why make the claim?
I've also recieved various texts and seen various things on Facebook about Freebass playing. Yet its not happening is it? Why were things like this spread?
It does seem to be the biggest ego trip I've seen in quite some time."Peter Hooks The Light" Well, we know who the star of the show is, dont we? Playing a selection of songs from his back catalogue. Well, seems to me the opening night of the club is exactly what i said this club is going to be about. Its going to be about the old crew harking back to the good old days. And weekly Hacienda nights? On what night? A Saturday. Yep, really doing a good job there for new and upcoming musicians there.
ETA: Here is a link to Steve's website, where it explicity states that Freebass will be making their live debut on this night.
By the way, any mention on cost of this yet? For what effectively is a tribute band, I bet its expensive.

Why not just say "I don't fancy this much, but you lot go ahead, each to their own" or do teachers not bother with tolerance, opinion and diversity?
I bet you'd rather go see David Cameron and the feltchers
Well, considering the last time I saw Hooky do a gig like this, it was without question the very worst gig I have ever seen, I probably would go and see David Cameron and the Feltchers.
But anyway, this is supposed to be a forum for debate. I am raising perfectly valid criticisms of this night and concept. Teachers also encourage debate, just in case you didnt know.
Its now been five years since Freebass was announced, and this is what is being produced? Its really quite pathetic.

Liam, I can't remember the last time you said anything positive, about anything! It can be pretty draining. You were in nappies when the Hac was in it's heydey and I'm sure this might have a little to do with your opinion of anything Factory/Hacienda related.

And what does my age have to do with anything?
My negative opinion of msot things Factory based are because it has become everything that it was set up to opppose. Almost Animal Farm like, if you will. I'm sure the original factory was about giving new bands and artists the opportunity that no one else would give. Or am I wrong about that and it was in fact about harking back to the old days with one member of a band playing songs from his old bands back catalogue?
Seems like Hooky is turning in Manchesters version of Mike Love.

I wouldn't say anybody's opinion is shit just because it goes against what I think, that was a (supposedly humorous) reference to the TW book!
But you are so negative about anything Factory related. Why do you care if some of us are looking forward to this? You always feel the need to rain on the parade, so to speak.
You don't want to give Freebass a chance, or the club, but this project is all about showcasing bands as well. Is that shit too?
You refused to see Bad Lieutenant at Christmas, when you had a ticket, and all of us were going in. I don't understand that mentality. At least watch them live before declaring them shit. I'd have a bit more respect for your opinion then.
I didnt watch Bad Lieutenant because:
I wanted to wait to the last minute to get a ticket because of the fucks up with my original
I went to meet Deano, who I hadnt seen in ages
I think the album is shit!
Jemma, this project is not about new bands. This is about another money spinner for the old boys. Weekly Hacienda nights? On a Saturday? Look at the name, look at the the opening nights. This isnt about the present. This is about the past, and making a(nother) quick buck out of it.
Dear Liam,
I presume you missed all the publicity and elicitations from the Factory staff, encouraging unsigned bands to send in demo tapes and submit the URLs to their websites/Myspace pages.
The result of this was that hundreds of new and exciting bands are now on the roster to play at The Factory, giving them a higher profile than they might otherwise have had, so your supposition that the original Factory ethos isn't being followed is incorrect.
The reason that Freebass are not playing is because it's a night to celebrate the opening of the club, not to showcase one band, but members of many, past and present.
Freebass will play when they're ready - whether you appreciate the wait or not. As people have said, if you're not interested, you don't have to go.
I respect your opinions - as opinions can never really be wrong - I may well disagree with them though.
As for re-hashing the past, etc. I'd suggest that most people would use past success to promote a new venture on which many people are relying - for jobs, interest, good nights out, etc.
You are, of course too young to have seen "The Factory All Stars" at the original Hacienda - something which you seem to have missed in your criticism of the event - A celebration, rather than a money-making exercise.
For the record, the ticket price is very reasonable for a launch night - far less than one would pay for the average gig.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. C. A. Nash PhD.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. C. A. Nash PhD.
(I rarely use my correct title)
p.s. Mr. "Teacher" - the correct phrase is "TOE the line" - not "Tow" - a common misconception among the less well educated.
I didnt miss the publicity. To be fair, it was quite hard too. But the fact is, if there are bands nights (which I know there are) they are being hidden away on a weeknight. They are not put at the centre of this project. No, centre stage belongs to the old boys, proof of that is the weekly old school Hacienda nights. Saturday is the big night, and look whats going on then.
Your points about Freebass dont really answer any of my points I raised earlier. Why was it spread, and allowed to be spread, that Freebass were playing? Have you forgotten thats its been nearly (in fact, it might be over, but Freebass were announced in the run up to Sirens Call) five years since this project was announced? Bit of a piss take surely, what with the seemingly never ending blogs, interviews etc about it all?
I find it amazing that you are naive enough to believe that this is about celebrating bands past and present? Unless you truly believe Freebass (five years, and counting) as a contemporary band? No, its an ego trip, showing precisely whon is going to get centre stage at this venue.
And I dont think the Factory All Stars argument is relevant, because guess what? That was also in the past!
And for a covers band, in Manchester, I'd expect to pay no more than a fiver. Bet its more than that. Double figures at least.
Liam, your whole approach to this is like a drunken 6th form conversation. If you're that interested in new bands why aren't you a promoter? Why haven't you got a night at some small music venue where you can put on shite bands that a handful of people want to go and see? Why aren't you in a band?
Like everything else in life it's supply and demand - if enough people want to cough up some brass to go have a good night out with friends, being entertained, being reminded of their youth then what the hell is wrong with that?
If you don't like it do something about it.
Jack, like the poster but the tory twat was a Smiths fan. Bit of a theme there.

Can put on shite bands that a handful of people want to go and see? How in the name of all thats holy is any band going to get anywhere if people take that kind of attitude?
And the reason I dont have a night is because, well, I dont have the time. Maybe I did a few years ago, but certainly not. But I do get about a fair bit, not as much as I used to I admit, checking out new bands. And a lot of the time, its quite sad to see a great band playing to hardly anybody, because people have the attitude that they are playing in a small venue so they must be shite.
And the same old argument you've been wheeling out for years, i.e. that I'm a Smiths fan and a Tory is really tiresome, not to mention irrelevant.

Yup. One of the guys who invested time, money, reputation, etc. in the whole project. He's also made it quite clear that other people are "starring" in the opening night celebrations. If you had the talent and could pull the crowds, wouldn't you do the same?

And looking forward to the future of a new venue/club that intends to introduce a plethora of new talent to the gig/club-going Manchester public. It will also serve as another tourist attraction for Manchester. It's part of the city's cultural history.
The Teacher wrote:
And weekly Hacienda nights? On what night? A Saturday. Yep, really doing a good job there for new and upcoming musicians there.
Very few unsigned acts would expect to play a Saturday night. It's as much a club as a live venue. The club nights may well subsidise the new bands playing.

Not a tribute band - as previously stated, similar to the Hacienda appearance of the "Factory All Stars". The tickets aren't expensive. I'm not well off, but I could still afford a trip to Manchester and a ticket for the opening night for less than the cost of a London show...

someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I know somebody will, but is this not a "fan site" for "fans" of new order and related acts???, I do apologise if this thought is misguided. I happen to know one of the members pretty well, fairly nice fella once you get to know him, and he's going back into the nightclub buisness with a new venture called factory 251 or something. we will be playing some songs on stage with a few freinds for a bit of a laugh, y'know, a bit of fun for entertainment, and seeing as its his club, we thought it would be nice to play some of his tunes, some old , some new, because the people who would most likley be coming, would be fans of the music he, and others, have done over the years, so they can sing along like. its a licenced club, so apart from a couple of people, I'm sure there will be a few that will be a little merry, myself included, hoping to have a good time. if anybody here would like to come along, then details of the event will be made public tomorrow. hope to see some freindly faces ta paul
p.s. nobody is obliged to come, if you don't want to, you don't have to, sorry to have bothered you.....sorry, ta.

Sounds like a plan! I'm in!

I shall refrain from saying anything personal.
However, to counter your previous point about this wanting to be about the club night and not Freebass, surely if this project was about new bands and new music, then why couldnt you have Freebass play? The connection to the past would be there, but in a contemporary form? But no, it'll just be another hark back to the good old days.
Anyway, I eagerly anticipate today's announcement...
There's a new video on the webpage http://factorymanchester.squarespace.com/blog/2010/1/21/video-diary-episode-2.html
You get a glimpse of an email which gives ticket details for the 5th.

But anyway, this is supposed to be a forum for debate. I am raising perfectly valid criticisms of this night and concept. Teachers also encourage debate, just in case you didnt know.
Its now been five years since Freebass was announced, and this is what is being produced? Its really quite pathetic.
This isn't a debating forum, it's a forum for fans of New Order and their related side projects, to pass on information and news. You have no information or news other than you don't agree, we've heard this now, you don't need to continue.

I've never heard of a club opening night where you need to pay to get in. Invites and a few free refreshments is yer industry standard. Charging punters £22.50 to introduce them to an as yet unknown quantity is a bit off if you ask me.
The kids won't buy that for a minute. You'll have an opening night full of folk in the 30+ age bracket who only go out once in a blue moon. Not the ideal demographic for a club hoping to trade seven nights a week.

Uttergenius. We do still make some occasionally great/surreal telly in this country. ![]()

What a moronic, racist and generally ignorant comment.
Anyone listening to the news this week would probably agree with it though.
Modern Irish Politics sounds like a dictionary definition of oxymoron to me right now.
Or irony.

That link stated "no tickets available" within seconds of 12 bells.
Go direct through main site:
Does the Website work, tried at 1 min past & it just says 'cannot buy tickets through ticketweb' surely not sold out already?
Gutted. Tried to get tix for Jules and me. Was online at 12. They took the money from my account but as the confirmation was going through it said the site needed maintenance and to come back later. Now being told via e mail that my tickets weren't allocated to me so they will have to refund me! Not a happy bunny! ![]()
Was trying to get 4 for the Corby Order, but I got held up at work.

Thought that the ticket situation would be a bit mad, hence why I didn't bother in the first place...

just read the blurb about it and realised it's being bankrolled by the people behind Tokyo:( insert your town name here) might as well call it tokyo :manchester fair enough they've got ben kelly to spend all their money, but the clubnights and gigs arn't exactly revolutionary.
will we see more hacienda franchise nightclubs across the world if this one takes off ?
wow - this looks fantastic!
why are folks dissing this again?
just seems really positive, folks working hard to make a new club for other folks to enjoy... why would anyone get pissy about that?
if someone was building a new club in my town, i'd be psyched. one more option to have, one more place for bands to play live music. sounds good to me!
thanks for the video, jack... now i gotta go watch the other 3 i somehow missed...
