I've seen many people claiming that Blue Monday is the best selling single of all time.
I wonder, what's the truth there?
I've seen on many sites it was White Christmas, then We Are The World, then bypassed by Elton John's Candle in the Wind for Lady Dy.
On another hand, I've heard once it was Personal Jesus from Depeche Mode in 1989.
When people are saying it's Blue Monday, they must add the 83 and 88 releases together, is that it?
When I watched New Order on a Much Music Spotlight, they said Blue Monday was the best selling 12" single of all time.

Depeche Modes "Personal Jesus" was the biggest selling 12" in Warners (US) history. Having said that; WAS it Warner? Anyway, "PJ" was the biggest selling 12" on the US labels history. "Blue Monday" still ranks highest worldwide with most recent estimates claiming that if laid flat, the pile of 12"s would reach 19 miles high...

The only good thing about this fact, is that it shuts people up after they say "New Order have only had one Number 1...and that was a football song" quickly throw in the afore mentioned fact, and it bemuses them long enough for you to get to the bar and order another beer, and then come back and start slagging the Bee Gee's

And wasn't that track even surpassed by Celine Dion's rendition of the Titanic movie theme song, My Heart Will Go On ???

Non album songs are more likely to do this, so Personal Jesus was released 1 year before Violator, hence why they sold so many.
Good question, I guess someone should get the Guiness book of record to check that, it should be the place for that! (and their website sucks, so...)

I've always heard BM being the best-selling 12 inch single of all time. They will probably hold this record until Hoobastank releases their epic "I shot my mom and fucked her skull" in 12-inch format....:D

No special mention for DM's Personal Jesus, although as stated this is from the BRITISH edition of the book.
The reference FAC 73R has nothing to do with the 7" release, it just means it's a Remix of FAC 73 (hence the "R"!)

Right I have a question Now I have 4 copies of Blue Monday on vinyl (I play it alot) - now I've got 2 copies which start with the single bass beats but I've also got 2 copies which start with 8th bass beats, they all seem to be originals but the one I bought in 1983 had the single bass beats leading in so I'm presuming that this version is the original - but don't understand where the other is from - Any ideas cheers, UA
