New Order @ the Hacienda

While reading Hooky's excellent book on the Hacienda he talks about the gigs New Order did @ the hacienda. Also they are mentioned in giglist quite a few times as wel. This raised a few questions about these gigs with me, so maybe someone here can help me out.

1. Did anyone on here attend one of these gigs?
2. If so, where these gigs really good because played @ their own club or just average affairs? i am just curious...
3. any recordings from the hacienda gigs around and if so, which one(s) are recommended?

As said, just curious about this and i am sorry if this already has been asked before. Nonetheless any info is welcome..

20 July 1983 has one of the best ever audience recordings, find that.

Has there ever been a really great gig at the Hacienda? I know that the notoriously shitty sound system is now all part of the Factory mythology, but certainly the only time I saw a band there the sound was fucking dire: muffled, far too quiet, all subtlety lost amidst the steel girders and "modernist beauty".

The gig was in July, and that fucking skylight meant that the place was filled with natural light, thus rendering the band's lighting impotent. Not helpful when the band you're seeing is Spiritualized.

I was 17/18 and joined to see NO. still have lovely hand written letter from Penny on reception telling me NO would be playing and how membership worked. Their 1st gig was for free, no guests as I remember.

they did blow the electrics and tony wison came on to explain and got usual banter/reception!

didn't hooky have massive RANK gong that he used for IALP?

sweaty, hot, loud, exciting, intimate (at the front, stage right, Gillian). I uploaded some photos from the gig/s a while back on here.

my picure on here: I ripped off the side hacienda wall. need to frame it since it's now in 2 pieces. you can see the gallery and JCC advertised underneath it! thank god the manchester rain made tearing the poster easier.

went to all the hac order gigs apart from the first,,loved em all got a gig list from on of em and recently found me july 83 photos which i hope to upload at some stage. the june 87 gig was the first night of me stag weekend, some kind soul sent me a dvd of that along with the s,oundcheck always thought the atmosphere was good,even made the closing credits of the 85 whistle test atop wolframs? shoulders and thank god for the 192 allnighter home.

There's a fantastic video performance of YSF recorded in 83 there. Sounds very Kraftwerk indeed!!!

Went to 4-the 2 from 3/12/85,'86 & '87....the first 2 were fookin' excellent,sound was fine & the boots' will testify to that,the '86 one was good,most noted for a bottle being lobbed at the stage during the first song,STYT,& Hooky going mental,immediately stopped playing & started shouting & pointing,then carried on playing just scowling & staring at the audience,plus a cracking LWTUA,sound boomed tho',all the way thru'.The '87 one was ok,a very good Touched,as it was new,but gig was quite short & sound was fine as I remember.Altogether,very,very good memories,& the boots are all worth getting

I went in 1984 or was it 85? It was the LOWLIFE Tour anyway.Got right up to the front,under Gillian (oooh),crushed to death for my art,shoved the bunch behind me back,and tripped on that silly step down to the seats. I was too busy moshing to NO at such close proximity to judge sound quality. Check out my photies!!

My memories of this gig,were people in front of me being dragged up onto stage by bouncers,and Mr Wilson came on after a few minutes...

Saw the 87 gig, didn't like the venue and certainly not in midsummer.

The only time I saw New Order was at The Hacienda in June 1987 (the night before the general election). Support band was VVV. Remember waiting a loooong time for NO to come on. As posted above, they started with TBTHOG, but the rest is a blur for me.

Given that they were/are my favourite band ever, I think it must have been a fairly average performance for it not to have registered more with me. The sound was alright - I think the sound in the Hacienda was worst when it was empty and therefore echoey. I was surprised to even get a ticket for New Order; I was never a member of the Hacienda.

i went to the very first one in 82,i got a membership for a fiver therefore got to see new order for free!!!.went 83. think that maybe i went in 84 ?,get mixed up with them gigs though,not sure now,was all so bloody long ago :)

errmmm... ok its not NO, but this gig was the sweatiest gig I've ever been to, and must rate in my top 3 of all time.

They were kinda underground at the time, and stayed that way til they split. Place was rammed with raging Mancs though.

that seems alright actually..shows that other than new order occured there and was worth it.. coc twins was a disaster at hac.equipment kept breaking down.sad however saw birthday party there,1983(ish) and the bass player drank a 4 (or 6) pack of lager in the 30 minute slot.that was fucking amazing to see

I was there the day they played twice in a day and one was broadcast on Whistle Test - I was at the 2nd gig, can't remeber which was broadcast. Sure they were supported by a dreadful Happy Mondays that night

The early show went out live (well the first two songs only).

I thought the Mondays were quality actually,but to be honest,I was a bit mesmerised by Bez's maracas

Hey Burt, I saw NFAD at the LA2 sometime in the 90's, I think.Always felt they were very much in the JD bracket and of courese that melodica speaks NO.Very underestimated band I think.

Yup. Cos they never really put down what they could do live, on record. Hannett didn't do them any favours on their first album. (that kinda sounds familiar )

Believe it or not, they are apparently reforming, although I'd be amazed if they have same energy and power.
