Hooky bass/effects. Then and now

Somewhere in the last 10/15 years or so Hook changed his set up, for the worse imo. 'Live in Glasgow' is worth buying just for side 2. The older footage is so much better, his contemporary bass set up sounds thin and reedy.

Perhaps he should have tried a different style of playing after 1998?

his set up hasn't changed, so it must be the recording/production of the CD's & DVD's, his live sound is always going to have a lot more depth than any recording, to get things to sit right in a mix engineers will remove a lot of the bottom end of his lead bass to make way for the normal bass (synth or bass guitar) and the kick drum. this is probably what you're hearing.

Thanks for the explanation there! I was always wondering why the newer recordings sound so odd.

Ive noticed this too, cuz it even sounded different live. I just assumed that he changed his setup, and i never questioned it. But im not a huge fan of this new sound.

Maybe some of this is compromise with Bernard, part of their fighting.
