Next question, how do I get a bunch of Midi files burned to audio CD so they can be played on a stereo ? Presumably I need to convert them to WAV format or something ?

Yes, although I never tried something like that -- so I am not 100% sure a MIDI can be converted into a WAV.
And somehow, I doubt it could work, because a MIDI file is actually only a file containing data (keys) -- so it will indicate the computer or the synthesizer what keys to play, but it's the output system that will generate the sounds.
I've tried similar before, with varying degrees of success.

I presume the tracks you're trying to copy are burnt onto CD as audio files...?

Out of curiosity, I seeked an answer and launched CoolEdit 2000, and opened a MIDI file. The software converted the file to a "RAW DATA" audio file. When I tried playing it, it made a huge "squeek" sound, and then I wondered if I could save it onto a WAV format, and when I selected "Save As", my computer almost exploded.
So, I'm pretty sure it cannot be done this way, but I am also positive it could be done with a software which could record anything coming from the output audio of the computer. I don't know any software like that, though. How about checking download.com ?

The reviews of that download are quite right - there's a missing file that prevents you from using it ! Waste of time.....
There are MIDI to WAV converters, with a varying degree of success. I think the program simulates the sound produced by midi key press, and recreate the same sound in the wav file. I tried once... Wasn't really faithful to the midi, but was OK anyway.
