i do love when barney makes a joke at the Tokyo show (Pumped Full of Drugs) that misses the whole audience then pauses and says..."yeah.....right"...that must have been painful.

I will dig some tapes out - nearly every gig since 84 has something quoteworthy on it, though obviously nobody said much before then. I'm doing a tape sort-out tonight, I'll see what I can come up with.

i've never been to one of there shows, but i use to have the video for the "pumped full of drugs" tour.

the audience weren't very responsive to the band. at the end of a song where bernard broke his pick, he said,"i'd appreciate it if you'd applaude a little louder. i'm spending an awful lot of money on picks."

what a funny guy.

when they came out for the encore, you could tell they all just did some lines by the way they were touching there irritated noses. at least they gave the tour an honest title.

Kelly was a very attractive girl who I met in a bar in the main street of Gainesville and who was quite literally the most gorgeous thing on two legs. She took me out on the town and we ended up at a Fraternity house where I was expelled for drinking! (So much for John Belushi) and then onto an industrial club then a trailer park of all places for an E party - quite an evening.

I stayed in touch with her for ages but alas never saw her again...

Ignore Mr Scott's modesty - the US tour piece was/is inspirational, and is well worth tracking down. Makes you want to sell your house and, er, jump in a time machine back to 1989.

Back on topic, there's a great tape from Bradford (1984??) where the band lose their rag with the venue's annoying DJ and it decends into a fantastic slanging match along the lines of "fuck off and kind your own fucking business!!". On the BBC Glasto CD one punter screams "FUCK OFF!!!!!!" at Hooky as he introduces AOC (there's ALWAYS someone telling Hooky to fuck off at Order gigs.....) and I quite like the Woolwich '87 gig where Barney witheringly puts down one heckler with summat long lines of "Oh yes, ha ha ha, very funny. I wish you could be witty instead of just being pissed-up twats".

The Bradford tape you spoke of was in fact Birmingham Powerhouse, Sunday June 3rd or 4th 1984 - my first gig in fact - and the extended fight between the house DJ and the band was quite a laugh to be honest.

The band triggered "Blue Monday" from off-stage on the DMX then stopped it! Then the whole thing went tits up at that point and (hey) MR DJ thought he'd try and help the audience out...

Someone further up this thread noted that the "More Than Despair" bootleg missed out the last two tracks from the CLP gig. I was always under the impression that this was the complete (hilarious, brief, utterly chaotic) show: what were the final two songs played that night, anyone????

Also, dontcha think the ponderous title for said bootleg vinyl is comically inapropriate given the take-the-piss nature of the entire show (laughing at squashed punters, "big fat cocks", general contempt for their audience, almost complete inability to hit the right notes, etc, etc.....)?????

The last two songs at CLP 6/12/85 were Face Up and Age of Consent. I think, though, you may be getting gigs mixed up - wasn't it ULU where Barney was telling audience to back up and everything?

Bloody bootleggers - my copy of "More Than Despair" says it was recorded at CLP, so I dunno. This is the one where at the start of TPK Barney does his whole "can you all step back a bit please ... I don't give a fuck really but it sounds good if I say it", and the whole thing starts with Hooky going "C'mon, a bit of respect!!!" (what were the punters doing???). If this show did finish with Face Up & AOC it makes it one of my top 5 "if I could go back in time" gigs - what a set!!! And why aren't they on the "MTD" bootleg???

Does your More Than Despair start with Atmosphere? That was the opening song at CLP.

Yeah, it does start with "Atmosphere", so I guess it is the CLP gig after all. Think "DNE" is next, and then "Procession"....

The "spotty back" quote comes from Nagoya 29/1/87, where he introduces "Touched By The Hand of God" as "this is a new song called I got a wank off a girl with a spotty back".

Don't think so ! Hooky used to occasionally join up with various other Manchester musos to play this song, "sung" by John The Postman, at the end of Factory music nights, and I think the "our" that Ian was referring to was Factory as a whole (the Moonlight Club date the quote comes from was a Factory bands night).
