After reading Chris Nash's signature, I've started to remember some New Order (and Joy Division) quotes from live concerts. My personal faves:

"You should hear our version of 'Louie Louie'" Ian Curtis after playing a cover of "Sister Ray", The Moonlight Club, London, England, 03 April 1980

"Sorry about that, we all had to go get some heroin. Oh, I'm joking, oh I'm joking! Cuz remember, drugs are bad for you" Bernard Sumner, Red Parrot, Perth, Australia, 21 February 1987

"So slippery up here you cannot do anything... I dunno... You Americans and your weather" "Ignore what Hooky was saying, just listen to me. I'm the voice of truth" Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner, Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver, Canada, 02 August 2001

Now it's your turn. What are you favorite quotes?

There are hundreds ! I wouldn't know where to start.

How about "This one's called fromage et petit pois. As It Is And When It Was." Rennes Salle Villar 13/12/85

"I'd like to dedicate this song to someone who can't be with us today because they are dead. I think you all know who I mean. Mr Elvis Presley." Sydney Briotone Solonic 18/5/85

"This is a Barry White cover version." (Thieves Like Us, Lancaster University 14/3/85)

"This is the brass section. If the Jam can do it I'm sure we can." Hooky, handing Barney his melodica before In A Lonely Place at Tolworth 12/3/83

"Right, you didn't deserve that, and you certainly don't fookin' deserve this" Hooky, between Decades and LWTUA at Amsterdam Paradiso 17/5/84

Plenty more where these came from.

no sense rehashing them all here....just take a look at Waterrat's new-order.net site and all the between song banter is laid out in chronological order....now, maybe we could find good quotes from shows not listed and send them in to help complete that excellent source of neworder information...by the way, has anyone listened to the interviews hosted at that site? Some really good moments there if you haven't checked it out yet.

i do love when barney makes a joke at the Tokyo show (Pumped Full of Drugs) that misses the whole audience then pauses and says..."yeah.....right"...that must have been painful.

Okay, I have to confess that all the quotes on my previous post were copied from Waterrat’s website, but that page is too big and it’s hard to find the funny bits. That’s the main reason to open a thread about them. Besides that, someone can tell more quotes that are not at Waterrat’s. :)

I will dig some tapes out - nearly every gig since 84 has something quoteworthy on it, though obviously nobody said much before then. I'm doing a tape sort-out tonight, I'll see what I can come up with.

In Park City, Utah, USA 9/9/87:

Barney notices the people in front of the stage being pushed around and says: "We've got people being fooking crooshed up here. If you all move back one giant step, Hooky will give you each a dollar..." (Hooky reaches for his wallet)

Tokyo is full of sarcastic and pissed up comments!

"Now we'll play something else you dont know" "Turn this light off you cunt"

"If you don't move back we'll be doing a suffocation benefit here next week...and I'm sure you don't want us back in London again."

Barney during the Miners benefit gig at the Poly of Central London.

"I'm not a c..t, I'm not. I can hear you, and I know what you look like. Come on, come on up here and say that. We may be a pop group but you are a fookin' wanker." Barney, Birmingham 2/10/86 when they came back for an encore.

Im counting on someone to clarify exactly what he said here, but at MOVE Barney asked the crowd to mark the band on a scale of 1-10 or 1-5 or something along those lines.. i forget now but what he said was mildly amusing at the time

And no they never did get an answer at the end of the gig!!

Move back, somebody'll get crushed....I don't fucking care really, but it sounds good if you say that.

The "I'm not a cunt" comment that Easy E mentions was - unless he's said it twice, I don't think in Birmingham, as I know I've heard him say it as well (and I wasn't at the Brum gig)

At Margate Barney said he would like to dedicate Blue Monday to "Elvis Presley, who I base my entire vocal style on and who I think I look a lot alike"

At Wolverhampton he goes on about how he likes Wolverhampton and it makes him thinks of wolves. With big cocks.

"You've got the flag upside down, guys. It says Norder Wen!"

Barney, Paris, 11.11.2001

Er, or something like that. Perhaps someone has the bootleg? (Between Crystal and Transmish)

'Err, this one'll knock spots off yer, this is our new single' launch into Ceremony - Blackpool 1980. Perhaps the first NO concert quote ?

Fuckin hope so:nod:

"Hello we're New Order. This is Reading. You're the audience. Let's rock the fuckin house" Barney leads us into Regret 98

MOVE was something like:- Theres some forms to fill in on the way out. A is excellent! B is very good! C is Dogsh*t! We hope to get a few A's plenty of B'S and not many C's!

But along with everyone else was a little bladdered so I could be a little out.

SALFORD RULES OK

Hook; "Not you again...we came 4,000 miles to get away from you bastards" - Miami, Knight Centre, 1989.

I always thought he had said "5,000 miles" but then I did the math and I suspect I was wrong.

thanks to Rocket Mick via Muffy the Generous i've just pissed myself laughing at the London Polytechnic 6/12/85 gig...

"Ahead of are fucking time we are..ahead of your time...Bronski beat ripped that one off and I could name a few more"

Barney after The Perfect Kiss

at the Slough Gig kindly tacked on (where are the final 2 songs from London guys?) She's Lost Control...

Hooky says "Just to prove we love you" then someone in the audience says "Fucking 'ell !!!" as the drums kick in...very nice!

by the way Jonathon, could you post the article you wrote about neworder's US tour for Paradise? could someone please post that.....

This is even funnier when you know Hooky is talking to Canadians not Americans.

Also at the show Somebody requests Ceremony and Barney say "Were not going to play Ceremony because Ceremony F**king sucks"

Leeds Tiffany's, in response to calls for Temptation - "Temptation" (in whiny voice) "I fuckin' hate that song"

Can't remember which show, but after 586 once Barney said something along the lines of it being ripped off by Dead or Alive and them being twice as cheap.

i've never been to one of there shows, but i use to have the video for the "pumped full of drugs" tour.

the audience weren't very responsive to the band. at the end of a song where bernard broke his pick, he said,"i'd appreciate it if you'd applaude a little louder. i'm spending an awful lot of money on picks."

what a funny guy.

when they came out for the encore, you could tell they all just did some lines by the way they were touching there irritated noses. at least they gave the tour an honest title.

Sadly I can't as I don't have any copies of the magazine left - anyway, it's shite and most probably very sad on reflection...That Kelly Roberts bird WAS a total fucking ride by the way and I would pay hard earned cash to track her down after all these years - She picked me up in Gainesville at 3 in the morning in a convertible VW Bug and promptly crashed into a wall - thus, I was in love....apologies to the girls on the forum who will no doubt be screaming even more abuse at me than normal at this point.

Ye divn't get any abuse off me petal!

Excuse my ignorance, but who hell Kelly Roberts?

Kez - do you remember the German bargirl in Paris? Well...

Kelly was a very attractive girl who I met in a bar in the main street of Gainesville and who was quite literally the most gorgeous thing on two legs. She took me out on the town and we ended up at a Fraternity house where I was expelled for drinking! (So much for John Belushi) and then onto an industrial club then a trailer park of all places for an E party - quite an evening.

I stayed in touch with her for ages but alas never saw her again...
