On very first listen I like 'Not too Late' and 'Secrets and Lies'. Think I prefer it initially over the EP.

Be nice to have a physical release and I'd buy it but I don't know why. I get a CD, put it on the iPod and then never touch it again.

I think the best thing to do would be to do one collectors edition on CD that contains the album plus EP and some extra remixes or tracks that are only available on the physical copy (maybe the rejected songs that are on the myspace site) and the full artwork. Just a thought.

I had some troubles too but after the 10th time it was successful

Downloaded no problem. I really like it.

Not 100% sure about some of the vocals, which remind me of Pink Floyd. Some of the guitars do too. There's some really lovely bass bits throughout though, which is of course what we tuned in for. It's great to hear a nice clear recording of Paul's drums. I love those bits where it sounds like the all the nuts have fallen out of the kit and he's trying to keep it all in the air with the sticks. I don't know if there's a proper drumming term for that (or even if it sounds like a compliment). Lady Violence is a cracking example; that's a great track.

Stalingrad is still growing though. I'm beginning to think it might not be a grower at all.

I love the opening track Not Too Late, not least because it's got that element that I expected and hoped of Freebass: a wonderful interplay between Hooky and Rourke's bass, both of which I love to bits. Bonus melodica too - yes!

That interplay is on The Only Ones Alone too, and right through the album.

I'm dead pleased with it - really looking forward to seeing them live now.

And if the intro to Kill Switch takes me somewhere nice and buys me a couple of drinks some night, I think I might just fall in love with it.

Wow, that came out of no where, pretty cool! I just bought it, downloading now so no idea what it sounds like yet. I'm sure there will be something I love on it though, the EP was pretty good and I've always enjoyed Hooky's work in the past. Hopefully there will be a vinyl release at some point..

Loved it instantly, absolutely. Great sound, and fantastic tunes. Hard to choose favourites now, maybe Lady Violence, World Won't Wait, She Said, The God Machine and Plan B. You hear a lot of Joy Division, New Order and Smiths, and yet it sounds like nothing else. The singer is alright. And the weakest song here pisses all over the whole Muse discography. Not as good as Revenge, but way better than Monaco, and maybe slightly better than Bad Lieutenant. It's amazing, really. It took time and it's a shame it's getting such a low-key release while it should be all over MTV, but I'd have never expected this to sound so good. Don't care about CDs, I don't even have room for them anymore. There's the artwork anyway, though the resolution is too small. Maybe a PDF booklet would have been better. Sound quality is good, just plug this to a couple of good speakers and who really cares if it's a cable to your stereo or a CD actually spinning at that point? For the most demanding audiophiles, it should be considered an option to purchase this as FLACs. But who needs real CDs nowadays, come on... if I had all the music I have on my hard disks as audio CDs I should rent another flat just for storing them! :D

need to give it a second listen tonight, was not what i expected, but i say that in a good way. the vocals need a second play for my brain to digest. more metallic than i had imagined it would be. keep forgetting this Freebass is less about Hook and more about other artists, compared to Revenge and Monaco's composing...

The album is way better than the ep, I only likes 2 songs from the EP, but the album is great with great catchy songs.

The Bad Lieutenant album was also good, but the new Freebass album is very good also, when I heard the 4 track ep I was not that impressed, but after hearing the album this weekend I liked it very much, it has hooky's bass in it and just like Bad Lieutenant it has nice New Order moment's woven in to it, and you are right about the MP3, I am not a big fan of it but I have no choice right now because I have to listen to it, but as soon as the cd and the vinyl comes out I will be buying 3 copies of each, when it come to anything with New Order money is not an option, I usually spend $100 dollars on the cd's.

Glad so many folks here seem to like it; not so sure myself however. Whilst I think it is a bit unfair to compare Bad Lieutenant and Freebass, I think NCAT is a far stronger release overall. Don't get me wrong, there are highlights on the Freebass album (less so on the EP), but I find the wavering high pitch of the vocals really grates after a while, counteracting any capacity for the tracks to be 'growers'. The quality of the songs seems to sag a little in the middle - the best tracks for me are the first and the last ones. There's some recycling going on too, the bassline from a Revenge track here, a riff borrowed from the EP there, and in one case, the entire backing track from 'Dark Starr' with different, yet still wavery, vocals. I'll persist with it, hoping I change my mind with further listens, but this is where things are sitting for me at present. CTB

Hmmm, not sure what to make of it yet, but I am enjoying it. I'm not that keen on the vocalist, my first impression is he's sorta of MOR, and reminds me a bit of that guy from The Seahorses Chris Helme. He's not bad though. I really enjoy the different bass styles and some of the songs, music wise, are very good. I think this will be a grower, but at the moment I think I prefer Bad Lieutenant.. mostly because of Bernard's voice. I wish Peter Hook sang more, I've always liked his voice. Anyway, I'm anticipating the physical release. :D

I bet you money that these songs are going to be on the cd's or vinly, most likely they will be bonus track on the cd's and guess what I will buy 3 copies of each also, also I have to say that I am very impressed with the artwork of the album very colorful, remember I was really pissed off with the BL artwork which was black and white. Overall very good cd.

Well it's not a Hooky solo album - what did you expect ;)?

I love it more with every run. But I think I like the EP very slighlty better because of the different voices. They make it more interesting somehow.

NCAT sounds more NewOrdery than IABL, although IABL does have the occasional tinge of JoyDivision which NCAT doesn't. IABL also seems a bit melodramatic at times.

Having heard Man Ray I think the old buggers should put aside their differences and get on with making Technique2.

I disagree, I think there's plenty of singles, there are no obvious stand out tracks just because they're all so good that it's not like one of those albums where all the tracks are crap apart from a couple of good ones, and there you have the obvious singles. Not Too Late is not my favourite, but I think it's very catchy and should get a decent airplay. She Said is a strong rock track, pisses all over U2. Plan B has a Joy Division mood, it's not really catchy but it's very emotional, so it's another song which may work as a single. Sad to learn Paul Kehoe has been fired, not by Hooky it seems. Excellent drums here.

I think the album is great, when I first heard the 4-track ep, I was not the impressed , I only liked 'You don't know this about" and "Live tomorrow you go down" and the other 2 songs sounded like some loud psychedlic type of songs which I hated, but after listening to the new album, it has 8 great songs out of 10, I am not a fan of "Lady Violence" and "She said", they sound like they don't fit it, at least the other songs have hooky's classic New Orderish bass in it and some nice synths but those two songs don't and they don't belong in the album, again it is my opinion, this album gets 4 STARS out of 5 from me, VERY impressed, I thought it was going to be some loud music but it shocked the hell out of me.

Really really loved it at first ... but that voice...it gets too whiny at times and sounds very much early 90's alt rock. Not my cup of tea. The music is great though.

Agreed! This vocalist is so annoying it makes the album unlistenable, it's already deleted from my iPod. I'd rather have Tim Burgess doing all the vocals, the only singer who added something to their sound in my opinion.

The singer seems to be the main thing people are talking about on here. His voice is not what I (and by the sound of it most people) were expecting, but it would be stupid to get another Barney sound alike (no disrespect to Potsy, I think he's fantastic). this was an attempt to do something different.

To me he occasionally sounds like James Dean Bradfield, but mainly he's just quite unique, not a bad singer at all, just different.

Why aren't they promoting this through youtube yet? Not a single teaser to sample there. I honestly haven't had the time to download it yet (as it seems to take multiple downloads to work), but really would at least get a taste of it (without the Hooky voice over crap).... release a single, even if it isn't an official single

I do remember Never Cry Another Tear being reviewed by the music mags over here...although as for Freebass, maybe there's no promos for them to do so.

Ive been listening to the album for a few days now, the albums defintely a grower. Noticed that "she said" has some lyrics robbed from the clash's guns of brixton, also primal scream had that song suicide bomb on that god dam awful last album.

The press and other reputable websites DID get mp3s of the E.P,the album is another story mind - politics.

As for coverage in the music press and media etc,it is a finely tuned affair,if Freebass want press they get press.

I am really looking forward to listen to Bury Me Standing, Sister Surrender and Believer but I hope that they sound nothing like Lady Violence and She Said because they were my least favorite songs on that album and they sounded too loud and too noisy but the other songs sounded very good, again it is only my opinion.

The album is OK im my humble o, but it's been destroyed for me but the earlier mention of the singing resembling Jesus Jones. I mean Pop Will Eat Itself were good, but not Jesus flippin' Jones... It's just ruined the Freebass album for me...but the ep is very fine, and as I say the Arthur Baker remix is a cracker. I now regret not shouting out at Goodwood and getting onto the CD...you know like when that bloke shouted out 'Judas' to Bob Dylan...I thought of 'Who needs Barney anyway', but I would actually like to see them all together again at some point...any chance of a gig with Gillian back? Silly one: why did the TV advert use a cover version of Ceremony?

The collaborative project between the triumvirate of celebrated Mancunian bassists Peter “Hooky” Hook (Joy Division / New Order), Gary “Mani” Mounfield (The Stone Roses / Primal Scream), Andy “Rourkie” Rourke (The Smith) and lead singer Gary Briggs (Haven / Strays), the Freebass album finally arrives some five years after first being mooted by its bass guitar hero members.

Taking time to audition a succession of guest vocalists before appointing the emotively talented Gary Briggs as Freebass’ front man, Gary is considered by many the finest Manchester lead singer of the last decade. However while sessions with Gary progressed and Freebass’ sound became more and more honed, Andy Rourke moved to New York in 2009, but contributes to tracks on the album.

The studio album, which brings together the seminal bassists of the seminal Mancunian groups of the last 30 years, originally developed from free-form sessions between Hooky, Mani and Rourkie which provided the open minded, expansive sound of Freebass. Deftly arch guitar work and wonderfully cascading bass lines permeate the album which serves to slyly re-interpret members’ styles and influences in an inventive engaging cocktail of Northern Soul, dub, Krautrock and more, paying homage to the past but not trading off it.

Adapting the illustrious members styles and decades of experience into an innovative and dramatic album “It’s A Beautiful Life” varies its mood throughout, throwing in lighter, delicate, more melodic numbers, “It’s Not Too Late”, “The Only One’s Alone” and “Secrets And Lies” offset against some anthemically brooding, darker-edged tracks, including “Plan B”, “Kill Switch Pt 101” and “Lady Violence” with rock-ier indie tracks such as “She Said” and “The God Machine” rounding off the original album.

This Double CD release comes with three extra exclusive tracks which will only be released on this edition, “Bury Me Standing”, “Sister Surrender”, and “Believer” and contains a second CD which features instrumental versions of all tracks.
