Hooky and a strange bass....

Anyone able to shed some light on this monstrosity? and Jack, ye dad still have it/wanna sell it :D

God knows what song he's playing, but he looks like he's enjoying it!

The Bass is a Roland G77, the bass equivelant of the G707 (known as the Daleks hand bag, Cambo will probably like that) the G77 connected to a floor unit containing the synth engine from a Roland JX8p, I think it was discontinued in 1984, hence the very young looking Hooky and Sarge in the background with hair!!!

Did a little google, and yet again Hooky has introduced me into a piece of kit i'll never own but spend my life fruitlessly trying to find one

I wouldn't bother it's got too much of a connection with sigue sigue sputnic!

Saw it once at Bradford st georges in '86, think it was for Broken Promise.

The Roland GR series had audio pickups and outputs as well as those for MIDI/onboard synth, so I assume that's how it's being used.

I would further assume that he more commonly used it for programming the synth basslines, many of which were his work....until now I'd always wondered if he's played them on the bass then made a one finger stab attempt at putting it into the sequencer, but the use of a 77 would certainly have made it a lot easier.

Does look like it's connected via a great big fuck off plug, I don't know if all it's outputs came out on a single multicore or if it had a standard 1/4" jack too.

Was it used for 586, perhaps? That's one of the few songs that has bass notes similar to the sequenced bass line, and no solos.

Sorry mate, this bass is the only thing I remember from the gig. Always had it in mind it was Broken Promise but could be wrong, hadn't seen it before and haven't since.

He used to use it for Shellshock didn't he?
