Meeting New Order

Any interesting tales to tell about meeting members of the band?

Followed Steve and Gillian around Macclesfield town in 1987/8 while on numerous King's school lunchbreak walks. I was not a stalker back then...!

I first met Bernard in 1991 I think?...It was while we were waiting to see if a new album would surface after the collapse of Factory. I spotted him in Wilmslow and followed him into the newsagents. I eventually plucked up the courage to speak to him outside as he got into his BMW Z3. He was very non committal but did offer a handshake. Met him more recently at the Ritz after the Bad Loo gig. He was more forthcoming and shaking hands like no tomorrow.

Met Hooky on numerous occasions at talks etc. Very friendly and he always remembers a face. Signs anything you want too. He was always enthusiastic and instrumental in the success of Paradise sending us information while they were recording or on tour. I have some very interesting letters from him about what he was doing with Revenge etc. Some written on 'Suite 16 Recording Studio' headed paper and one from 'Ibiza Mediterraneo Studios' while recording Technique.

A mate of mine met Hooky at a Revenge gig and offered a handshake to his hero which was met with a very sarcastic limp wristed handshake in return. Needless to say he was no longer a hero!

Ive only met Hooky, but have met him a few times now, and he's always nice, a real people bloke, perhaps he was different when he was drinking, which could explain why your mate had such a different experience, but he's always been open and friendly with me, even when I just bumped into him in the street on my way to the freebass gig at the factory.

I'd love to meet the rest of the band, and wish I'd met TW too.

When i interviewed Hooky at the FACTORY press day i said summat like..

"you yer twat youv've cost me a fuckin fortune over the years"

He just laughed and said "well if i'm supposed to be one of your heroes your nor very fucking polite are you, yer cheeky C**t! "

Not the whole story mind,the question was originally about hooky's heroes etc ....

Also bear in mind that the press day was really purely about promoting the club but i managed to sneak in ALLSORTS,and even got to ask him about the fabled "hooky's closet" which IS jammed packed full of rareities,tapes, acetates etc!

He did finish off saying that you should never meet your heroes,i cant remember who he directly quoted,It could have been AHW but i could be wrong. I'll have to dig the audio out and check.

Lovely bloke too,he was well made up when i gave him the best of promo puzzle at the book signing day in Manc .

Same goes for young Jack who i met at the club opening nite and did a small interview with, a true chip off the old block

I met Phil and Jake in/outside the mad ferret at the Preston gig earlier in the year,they were both quite happy to pose for foties.

Gets back to our hotel and they are only staying in the same place!

Had a word with Jake who recognised me from the pub earlier and he asked me what i thought of the gig. Twas nice beeing remembered,but then again i was with ROCKET MICK, MISSY JEM, BANSHEE and a few others, so thats hardly surprising is it!

I think he met Hooky on a bad day but knowing my mate he was probably over sycophantic!

Oi Hooky!!

I shared a few drinks with Hooky (and Twinny) at Kro bar opposite Manchester Uni the afternoon before the Monaco gig there in 2000.

A really nice, genuine Salford bloke, who seemed happy to be continually interrupted by folks aking him to sign all manner of records & souvenirs.

I met my hero & found I liked him as a person as well as a bass-swinging monster.

I did think he'd be taller though. :D

I saw Ian, Bernard and Hooky one Saturday afternoon on Portabello Rd Market in London - it was the night after a gig, but I can't recall whether it was Electric Ballroom Oct 79, or ULU Feb 80. I went over and mumbled "hello, love your band" and they mumbled back. Then I shuffled awkwardly away. Aah, to have your time again.....!

Ah, he'll have loved that.

His faves are the pink round ones with the coconut flakes. Finger-suckin' good.

Nice one. In those days if you'd had enough gumption to offer them a drink I'm sure they would have taken you up on it.

Met Hooky at Newcastle Riverside back in 1990 when he was touring Revenge.

I got there really early - I was the only one at the venue. Went for a piss, then Hooky came in, got chatting, and he was fucking great - bought me a pint of cider, signed my '&' Round and Round t-shirt, and introduced me to the rest of he band.

Top bloke.

I first met Bernard at a club called Peruvia (in Wilmslow) in the late 90’s. It was always full of celebs – mainly footballers. We were at the bar and my friend (who always saw him at the Hacienda – when I didn’t) was stood next to him. She struck up a conversation with him, while I just stood there awestruck!

When I finally spoke, it was to say “I named my parrot after you!” He looked bemused to say the least and after an awkward moment of silence my mate started chatting to him again – while I was stood there thinking ‘what did you say that for you loon?’

He then bought us a brandy and coke and we carried on with our night. Met him again at the Ian Brown Aftershow party at Aqua Bar and gave him a Barney’s Angels badge, which he was pretty pleased with. He was happy to pose for photo’s with me, Bonz and Canada.

Met Hooky several times now, mainly at exhibitions, DJ nights, Hacienda nights and before most of the gigs in 2006. He now classes me as Jacks stalker!!

Met Steve Morris at the Joy Division Documentary screening at The Lowry a couple of years back which I was pretty chuffed about, he was a really nice guy. If only I’d known Gillian was in the audience, I’d love to meet her.

I met Hooky after the Unknown Pleasures evening at Norwich UEA. He was really nice and I was very excited to meet him.

Would love to meet Stephen, Gillian and Bernard too.

Ive never met New Order.

I did once meet Grandad from off of the Heinz soups adverts.

He's probably dead by now, like.

I have met Hooky twice and Steve once and they were very pleasant.

I met Stephen outside the Ritz in 2009 after the BL gig there, he was very friendly and chatty, just as he comes across in the interviews

Gillian was with him also, rather shy but pleasant she didn't really say anything mind just a smile, more or less dragging Stephen away from the fans, I can recall her saying "come on!"

Perhaps an hour or so later I met Phil C at the aftershow party at Odders Bar and we talked about Marion, New Order and Bad Lieutenant

At the opening weekend of The Factory club I met Hooky and he was in a very good mood, buzzing from the atmosphere of the packed top floor. Managed to get a photo too.

I met 2 New Orders and a Bad Lieutenant at Sound Control in June 2010 for the Ian Brown aftershow party, the first was a few handshakes with Barney and some quick chats, I was cheeky enough to slip him a flyer of my single, and managed to get some poor quality photos. I met Phil C for a second time who seemed quite drunk or something like that... and had a photo and quick chat with Jake. I said I liked "Shine Like The Sun" a lot which he was pleased to hear.

I met Barney at TFI Friday (former music show thing on Channel 4) at Riverside studios in Hammersmith in 1996 when he was promoting Second Nature with Electronic.

He was in the bar and I just said hello and we got chatting although I was really nervous, shook his hand and asked him the $64,000 question: would the Order reform again? He said he wasn't sure but that he hoped so. I also asked him if he and Johnny would play live again and he said it depended on how busy Johnny was.

I walked out of there on cloud nine.

My mate used to run the Carling Academy venue in Liverpool and managed to get us backstage passes for the Big Top Arena gig in 2006.

There was a big open backstage area behind the Big Top where the dressing rooms portacabins for the band were.

That evening I met Steve and Hooky before they went on stage whilst somewhat bladdered. I think its fair to say I didn't make a good impression.

When I approached Hooky he was talking to Alan Wise. Hooky called Alan Wise a fat bastard and I said "you can talk". Why??!! Why would I say that??!! He just scowled at me.

I then scurried off, ashamed, and spotted Steven. He was talking to someone in an animated fashion, obviously building up to the punchline of a funny story. I walked straight up, told him he'd helped change my life, shook his hand, and then walked off. As I walked away I heard him say to the other person, "sorry, I've lost my thread now.........".

Not the best day of my life.

Maybe not but you've just brightened my morning.

Never met anyone from new Order.

However I have met Ian Broudie, very nice bloke.

I'd love to meet him, he's done loads of great work, not just lightning seeds.

Never met em but have met Joe Strummer,Robert Smith (both of them got us into gig on guest list) and Siouxsie (met her in a deserted record shop while she was doing a signing).

Met Phil, Hooky and Andy Robinson at a night club in 2006. Very chatty and funny people.

Never met New Order, but I have met the drums(Likely that nobody gives a toss) and Donald Trump as well as Stevie Wonder. I do hope to meet Bernard one day, and ask him why he would make up words for early versions of the Village.

I have met Peter and Bernard as I live close by.

Interestingly this is a quote from Hooky in an interview from New Zealand regarding NO "We have no relationship. Our paths simply don't cross," says Hook bluntly.

I struggle with that as they live no more than a mile from each other and as I see them both knocking around the village - so they must see each other.

BTW - I still have to pluck up the courage to speak to either of them but when I have they have both been very nice and kieen to thank you for your support over the years

I saw that interview too and thought it was an interesting comment. I think their paths don't cross because they don't want them to. I also think that eventually they will cross again, and there'll be some reconciliation and maybe even a 'final' tour, although I doubt they'll get close enough to record together again.

I truely hope so - there would be some real closure if they toured one last time!
