NME (15 legendary rock venues)

Manchester's Hacienda, as recreated for the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People. Opening in 1982, the club initially specialised in live gigs (Madonna played one of her first UK shows there), but soon embraced the acid house scene. The scene of legendary debauchery, The Hacienda was also dogged by security problems. The club's owners ultimately went bankrupt and closed the club in 1997.

The Hacienda was shite, one of the worst venues I have ever seen a band in.

That's it? More myth than legend, they didn't play Hacienda.

Electronic did actually play at The Hacienda, in January 1991

They did - I was there!

Other notable (but not legendary) bands I've seen there include The Fall/ NO/ Roses/ Inspirals - actually I always enjoyed gigs there despite the fact that it wasn't really geared up for them. One of the best evenings was the Beloved- not for the music (which was mostly sequenced and mimed) but they didn't come on until midnight but when they did come on they gave out a crate of champagne - and me and a mate got 2 bottles - not good at school the next day!

Missed off the data base here then. Still, hardly a gig that rocked the world.

I saw it isn't on the data base, aye. It seems to be an Electronic gig that's been strangely forgotten. I remember a review of it in one of the music papers. I've got the official programme for the August 1991 Cities In The Park do and in it there's a photo of Barney at the January 91 Hacienda gig, playing keyboards -i'll try and get it up on here.
